Social Media
The show is utilizing social
media to share stamp
collecting with the world
and also promote different
participating societies,
dealers, and events.
W
orld Stamp Show-NY 2016 will have a strong presence at the American Phila-
telic Society’s StampShow this August in Grand Rapids, Michigan. While you
are enjoying StampShow, you can take a little time to think about and plan for
next year’s show in New York City.
The U.S. Postal Service will issue August 20 the two World Stamp Show-NY 2016 com-
memorative forever stamps. The first-day ceremony is free and open to all to attend. WSS-
NY 2016 will also have a booth at StampShow. Col-
lectors can stop by for show information and sign
up for show e-mail updates.
WSS-NY 2016 will have the hotel reservations
page released by the time you read this. There are
more than 20 hotels, representing a range in prices
and amenities. Some hotels are offering below mar-
ket pricing both in Manhattan and in nearby New
Jersey. The locations in New Jersey offer lower rates
with convenient transportation and reasonable
commuting distances to the show.
Organizers also are in the process of creating a
free “My-NY 2016” mobile application. The app will
work as a personal user-friendly show event sched-
uler. Showgoers will be able to look at the calendar
of events, pick the ones they want to attend, and drop it into their own personal scheduler.
It will make experiencing the show easier and let the user get the most out of the exhibition
and New York City. By later this fall, you should be able to visit the show’s website www.
ny2016.org to register and download the My-NY2016 app and make your show planning a
breeze. The show’s schedule will be updated as new events are added.
The show’s “Welcome to Stamp Collecting Pavilion” is being designed as an introduc-
tion to stamp collecting for youth and adults alike. There will be three parts: youth, adults,
and a theater. Also planned are an activity book and hands-on activities, as well as free
stamps from all over the world for children and beginners. With stamps being used as
curriculum aids in more than 5,000 classrooms in the United States, youth activities
at the show will take the next step in starting young people to collect.
StampBuddy mentors will be present to help adults find their way into stamp col-
lecting as well. The pavilion’s theater will project videos about stamp collecting aimed
at youth and adults and will provide a comfortable area for storytelling, lectures, and
other activities.
There will be an opportunity to take a walk around the world and visit the U.S.
Postal Service retail booth and more than 70 international postal administrations.
Visitors will receive a passport, and as they visit each country’s post office, they can pur-
chase stamps from the represented countries. Then that stamp can be canceled by each
country’s post office in the passport.
There will be many extraordinary exhibits at the show, including the unique 1856 Brit-
ish Guiana 1-cent Magenta stamp and other newsworthy gems, special society and club
exhibits as well as some of the world’s most powerful and historically significant collections.
The show will be held May 28 to June 4 at the Javits Convention Center in New York
City. Tentative show hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., except for June 4, which is from 10
a.m. to 3 p.m. For updates, visit the show website at www.ny2016.org.
