Lessons learned throughout an Australian
Defence Force career
Traditionally, Defence has been a male dominated field with
men occupying all of the senior leadership roles within the
organisation. However, the number of women reaching
higher ranks has been steadily increasing, and they bring
with them a unique perspective to leadership. From joining
the Royal Australian Air Force as a Supply Officer Cadet in
the 1980s, Air Commodore Tolson has successfully worked
her way through the Defence Force ranks. In this session,
she will reflect on her own leadership journey and the
lessons learned along the way. Explore:

Strategies for leading a rapidly changing
workforce: An Ambulance Victoria case study
Organisations within Emergency Services, Enforcement
and Defence are typically quite hierarchical in structure,
implementing a tactical style of leadership. The
demographic of the Ambulance Victoria workforce has
changed dramatically over the past decade with a shift
from a predominantly male, vocationally trained paramedic
workforce to a younger, increasingly female tertiary trained
one. This can change the dynamic and type of leadership
required to achieve the best outcome. As a leader, Tony
has taken responsibility for operational service delivery
and thousands of paramedics and volunteers throughout
Victoria. In this session, he will discuss:
• Key opportunities and challenges associated with a
changing workforce
• Successfully leading a cross generational workforce
• Effective engagement strategies

Leading from the front: Being decisive in
challenging circumstances
One of the defining features of great leaders in a
command and control environment is their ability to lead
decisively as part of their team. This requires them to
work alongside their staff to get the job done, as they
understand that a well performing team is better able
to cope in difficult circumstances. Colonel Susan Coyle
has vast leadership experience both within Australia and
overseas, having recently returned from Afghanistan
as the Deputy Commander of Joint Task Force 636. In
this session, she will draw on her own experience as a

Identifying different styles of leadership through
behavioural profiling
Not all good leaders are alike, and multidimensional leaders
understand that great leadership requires a range of
competencies. They are aware of both the strengths and
weaknesses in their personality traits, and use this knowledge
to increase their overall effectiveness. As well as this, they are
better able to understand and work with different personality
types within their teams. In this expert commentary session,
Christian will offer practical advice to assist leaders in
strengthening and honing their skills, including:

Strategies for dealing with stress and trauma in
the line of duty
Leaders in Emergency Services, Defence and Enforcement
are sometimes exposed to potentially traumatising
circumstances. It is therefore, important for them to have
strategies in place to deal with any negative impact arising
from these types of situations. Not only that, but leaders must
be able to build resilience to deal with the cumulative effects
that their duties may have on their health and wellbeing.
Having provided ongoing psychological support for personnel
involved in the Black Saturday bushfires, Chris has extensive
knowledge regarding how leaders can build and maintain
psychological resilience. In this session, he will discuss:
ABOUT THE EVENT
Leaders in the Defence, Emergency Services and Enforcement community
must develop unique skills to cope with the demands of leading in uncertain
and challenging circumstances. The services also share a command and
control structure, where leaders face different leadership challenges to typical
managers and must navigate the traditional hierarchy in order to progress.
This event will provide leaders with the valuable opportunity to share
their practical experiences in the challenging and complex operating
environment of Emergency Services, Enforcement and Defence.
Inspiring case studies and insightful expert opinion will provide delegates
with crucial skills that promote effective leadership in physically and
psychologically demanding circumstances.
Distinguished and exceptional leaders will present case studies that will
highlight the unique characteristics of highly effective leaders in command
and control environments. Upcoming and existing leaders will have the
opportunity to learn from those who have progressed through the ranks
and have met the challenges of leading in complex situations. Expert
facilitators will equip leaders with the skills that are essential for success.
The Emergency Services, Enforcement and Defence Leadership and
Command Management Summit 2015 is a fantastic opportunity for
leaders to maximise their leadership potential by developing their skills,
sharing their experiences and building their professional networks.

Refining emergency management processes: Interagency collaboration and community engagement
In an emergency situation, it is often necessary for a wide range of agencies to work together to coordinate the most effective response. This
collaboration takes place before, during and after the event, and frequently involves working with the community to develop emergency management
response processes. Information sharing enables all parties to reduce the threat of the hazard they are facing, and successfully execute a strategy to
better manage the situation. This interactive workshop is designed to assist Emergency Services, Enforcement and Defence agencies to coordinate
their approach to critical situations, as well as working with other relevant stakeholders to ensure the safety of the community. Lisa will assist you in
developing and honing key skills and strategies to achieve optimal service delivery during emergencies. Explore:
• The importance of hazard planning, and being prepared before an emergency strikes
• Strategies for successfully engaging with the community and key stakeholders
• Effective communication with other agencies at all stages of an emergency incident
• The benefits of post event debriefs and evaluation
• Empowering and developing community resilience
• Increasing organisational capacity to respond during a critical incident
• Successfully operating in a high stress environment

Key skills for resilient leaders in challenging environments
Leaders operating within Emergency Services, Enforcement and Defence must frequently work under challenging, physically demanding and high
pressure circumstances. In some cases the stakes are high and the response to a given situation may mean the difference between life and death for
those involved. In these types of environments, leaders require a unique set of skills to effectively command their teams and achieve success in complex
operational situations. In particular, leaders at all levels require the ability to bounce back when they are faced with challenges and difficult situations, as
well as the capacity to act decisively when it counts. In this practical interactive workshop, Adam will draw on his career in Special Forces to help you
develop the crucial leadership skills for your role. Discuss:
• How to inspire confidence in your team
• Be an ethical leader: Do what is right, and not what is easy
• Identify how best to utilise your key strengths within the leadership framework at your organisation
• Build your confidence
• Make the best decisions you can with the information you have
• Develop self-awareness about your strengths and weaknesses as a leader
