Raisingtuitionfeesto£9,000 has beenbadforstudentsandbad fortaxpayers.
The decisionbythe ToriesandLib Demsto increase tuitionfees to£9,000 meansthat the average
studentwill nowgraduate with£44,000 of debt. That's bad for them, because theyhave tensof
thousandsof poundsof debthangingoverthemfordecades – but it's badfor the taxpayertoo,
because almostthree quartersof studentswillneverpaytheirloanbackin full, andthe costof
writingitoff has to be metby the Government.Infact, governmentforecastsshow thatthe current
studentfee systemissettoadd £281 billiontothe national debtby2030-31.
Labour's planwill be fairertostudentsandtaxpayers
Cuttingtuitionfeesfrom£9,000 to £6,000 will reduce average graduate debtbynearly£9,000. And
because ourplanis fullyfunded,itmeans £40 billionlessgovernmentdebtby2030-31, or over£10
billionlessgovernmentdebtoverthe nextParliament.We willalsohelpstudentsfromlowerand
middle-income families byincreasingstudentgrantsby£400, sothat the full grantgoes upfrom
around£3,400 to around £3,800. More thanhalf of studentswill benefit. We will payforthe grant
increase byaskingthe highestearninggraduatestopaymore:increasingthe interestrate onthe
loanfrom 3 to 4 percent for those earningover£41,000. Thiswill make the overall systemof
repaymentfairer, butall studentswill be betteroff overall asaresultof our plan – withlessdebt,
and lesstorepay
