Media A2 - Horror Remakes
1.
2. • The start of the 2000s saw a quiet period
for the genre.
• Remakes of earlier horror movies became
routine in the late 2000s.
• The re-release of a restored version of
The Exorcist in September 2000 was
successful despite the film having been
available on home video for years
3. Reasons For Remakes
• Remakes of Horror films are more extreme and graphic, as
films from the 70’s and the post Vietnam-years are often
low-budget whereas nowadays directors have a larger
budget – Texas Chainsaw Massacre 70’s = $140,000 – Remake= $9.5 million
• May already have a fan base who will want to see the
updated version of a classic, easily marketed
• With today's technology, new cameras and editing the film
will be visually better than an original film
• They've had years to come up with new kills, makes the
story more appealing
• Production companies know they are going to make money
on remakes
4. • Remakes of other popular horror franchises
with films such as:
• Friday the 13th
• A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010),
• Hellraiser
• Children of the Corn
• The Hills Have Eyes (2006)
• Prom Night (2008)
• The Wolfman (2010)
5. Foreign Films
• Asian horror movies which have been remade into
successful Americanized versions, such as The Ring
(2002) and The Grudge (2004). In March 2008,
China banned the movies from its Market.
• The Last House on the Left is a 1972 horror film
written and directed by Wes Craven and produced by
Sean S. Cunningham. The story is based on the 13th
century Swedish ballad "Töres dotter i Wänge",
which was also adapted into the 1960 Swedish film
The Virgin Spring, directed by Ingmar Bergman
6. Cast
• Most actors and actresses in Horror movies are relatively unknown,
this enables people to fully believe in a character, also low budget
means the director cant afford celebrities
• However, remakes often features known celebrities, this is to attract
people to go and watch/buy the film
• Example:
Original Texas Chainsaw Massacre- unknown cast
Remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre- Jessica Biel
Original The Grudge- unknown cast
The Grudge- Sarah Michelle Geller
7. Reflection on Society
• Fear of crime is out of all
proportion to the actual levels
of crime
• Age limit prevents children
from buying, (no evidence
relating to the Jamie Bulger
case)
• Fans like to see classic icons
being brought back
• Encourages violence,
causes fear
• Children may get hold
of horror films and copy
what they see (Jamie
Bulger Murder)
• Why bring back horror
villains, may cause
offense
