A 59 year-old patient presented to our office for evaluation of
pain originating from tooth 26.
Clinical and radiographic evaluation showed presence of a
carious lesion, a restoration and a periapical radiolucency
around the MB root.
There was also a thin radiolucent vertical line in the distal
section of the crown suggesting the tooth was cracked (Red
arrows on Xray)
3. A Cone Beam Computed Tomography, CBCT, was taken in order
to confirm the diagnosis, treatment plan, and prognosis of the
tooth.
Thanks to the higher sensitivity and specificity of CBCT, a crack
was detected and the diagnosis of Cracked Tooth was
established.
Since the crack extended beyond the pulp chamber, the
prognosis of the tooth was hopeless and an extraction was
advised.
The CBCT in this case, helped us spare the patient an
unnecessary exploratory treatment.
