PhoneGap is an open source framework for building cross-platform mobile applications with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. This is an ideal solution for web developers interested in mobile development as it allows them to leverage existing skills rather than start form scratch with a device-specific compiled language; it also works well if you want an application to run on multiple devices with the same code base. In this talk, I'll discuss the pros and cons of PhoneGap, give a brief survey of other cross-platform mobile application frameworks, an overview to the PhoneGap architecture/ecosystem, and discuss our new open-source framework, Mulberry. Pair programming is challenging for uninitiated developers. It has long been considered to yield higher quality code but many developers avoid it because of the challenges and the changes to their workflow. Ping Pong Pair Programming, however is a technique that is easy to learn, addresses the frustrations of traditional pair programming, and encourages other development practices that also yield higher quality code. In this talk we describe the challenges of traditional pair programming, how Ping Pong Pair Programming overcomes them, layout the basics of Ping Pong Pair Programming and then demonstrate how it works in practice.

Codemotion Rome 2015 - Applications written for the modern web are being consumed not just on desktops, but also on a myriad of other devices... even watches and glasses. If you design your application with a pc screen in mind, you're either cutting your userbase in half or setting yourself up for an expensive redesign. In this talk I'll introduce you to some modern web design constructs, and the technologies that bring them to life. Learn how to create apps for phone, mobile and desktop with no extra effort, and without restrictive layout frameworks. Web has finally caught up with native apps... the future is now!

Javascript is awesome, and asynchronous. But some libraries are made by egocentric people : how to contain all DB interaction to the connection callback? Does the Callback soup a fatality? This talk help you to use data structure to keep safe your code. Some great ideas are comming from the functional programing world. How to use it with javascript browser and/or node.js? Is it really complicated? I write this talk because I use node.js a lot and write a lot of fix in my code to abstract database driver (couchbase, mongo, postgre...). I found an effective way to solve problems using functional programing data structure. But this talk is not for nerd or claiming functional programing superiority : some tools are cool, make your code cleanest and modular, so use it !

As developers we deal with an ever-changing and always growing industry, with new and exciting ways of being able to deliver awesome projects keeping up with any one single stream is always something a developer needs to keep on top of. From backend, frontend and ops, the opportunities to build cool things within each stream is endless. From Lua, Ruby and Node we can look at the similarities between some of the core languages and how you can use the knowledge of one to build into another, learning at least the fundamental behaviour within a stream language or bridging into a new stream. In this talk, I will share my experience of working on projects for some big name companies as a developer and why being polyglot was an important part of being able to deliver scalable projects on time and for being able to manage a team of developers for busy and thriving digital agencies.

Your boss has an iPhone, so of course he wants an app. But does an app really make business sense? Or is a responsive design website enough? And with hundreds of thousands of apps out there, what will make people choose and use yours? What makes a good mobile user interface? And how can you make sure your company actually delivers one? Responsive design might make sense if you've got a content driven website. But how should your web team work together when every web page they are making needs to work at any width and resolution? And can you get the content under control to make pages that really make sense on small screens and big ones?

There is a lot of noise being made about HTML5 as the new web technology to use and markets for apps as the best way to sell products and distribute applications to our end users. In reality there is not much new about it - all we are doing is treating the web as a distribution and sharing platform and browsers as the software to run our applications on. In this talk Christian Heilmann of Mozilla shows how in the near future application installation and in-app payments can happen on the most distributed market there is - the internet and through your browser. You will see how the technologies we build web sites in got an upgrade to allow us to build light-weight and focused applications that allow our end users to reach their goals faster and in a more re-usable fashion than with traditional ecommerce. Browsers and hardware are becoming more powerful each day, it is time to use that power in a sensible manner.

When conducting mobile web usability testing (with a standard setup) you need your web host, internet, local network and test device to work as they should. But technology fails, and people fail. So how do you build a set-up that won't fail? (For under £100!)

Cold logic makes a hard case for opting for mobile web apps over native ones. If you can build it in HTML, CSS, and javascript, then do, right? Except for the pesky little detail called the real world, where marketers demand apps, boardrooms pay for apps, and even worse, users seem to prefer them. Or do they? In this talk, Brian will try to reframe the web vs native vs hybrid debate into a conversation about what your customers really need, and what they’ll actually use. The technology you choose for your mobile approach is of strategic importance, but you need to be thinking about much more than just technology.
