Vivid Colorful Animal and Nature Paintings by Self-Taught Artist
1. Carol Callahan-Maureen “Beginnings” January 2014
I love to make joyful images with vivid colour. When I’m painting I’m happily
nowhere else. Art-making seems like a form of focused play.
Originally from Aotearoa/New Zealand, the bright light that shows fresh greens and
blues seems to influence my intensely coloured palette.
For subjects I’ve consistently been drawn to what I love – animals and nature. I’ve
had cats in my life for more than two decades; taming and loving a feral family as my
own has been one of my greater achievements. I’ve no end of good material as I’ve
been lucky enough to land on Vancouver Island close to wild places and wild
creatures, spend a lot of time in the Yukon and visit the Arctic, and travel to
Newfoundland.
For technical training I’ve done a couple of courses at a Victoria art school and I hit
the books. I started painting on and off about nine years ago. I’ve been drawing
intermittently for a long time.
This is the first time I have entered a public show. I’m a self-admitted terrified artist.
I’ve gifted cats, dogs, turtles, birds, butterflies, flowers, and landscapes to delighted
family and friends in New Zealand and Canada, some by express order.
I hope you enjoy taking in my paintings as much as I enjoy creating them.
