I got 3rd
yearthistime.The group had13 studentsthatwere between15and 16 yearsold.Their
Englishlevel wasB1+.I wentto observe themtwolessonsandthenI delivered 6lessons.I
practicallyspentthe whole month(October) withthem.
I made themworkin groups,alwayschangingthe memberssotheycouldgetoutof theircomfort
zone and itworkedwonderfullytobe honest.Imade themwatchan episode of a BritishTV show
calledBlackMirror. It wasveryinterestingtolistentotheiropinionsandthoughtsbecause even
thoughtheyare young,theyare developingtheirownmoral andpersonal perceptionof things
and it’swonderful tochallenge themintothinkingbyaskingthemasmanyquestionsaspossible.I
thinkthat notmany adultscare enough(orat all) aboutwhatthe youthmightthinkbut truthis,
theyare the future of thisworldand eventhoughtheyare young,theyare developingashuman
beingsandas membersof societysotheymatterandso doeswhattheythink.
I had a verynice time andrelationshipwiththe studentsduringmyshorttime withthem.They
wouldn’tcomplainaboutanyactivityandItriedto make everythingseemlighterthanitwas.I
wouldmake themspeakabout real events,askthemtheiropinionandbydoingthatI thinkthat
theynoticedIactuallycaredfor and aboutthemand theirthoughts.
I don’tthinkI woulddoanythingdifferent.Iamveryproudof my work withhighschool students
to be honest.Imixedupa lot of differentactivities,made themproduce theirownmaterial
several times,workedwiththemacademicallyandhumanlyaswell. Ihadgreatrapport withthem,
as I mentionedbefore,theywouldrespondverywell toeverythingIaskedandtheyfinished
everythingontime.The onlythinkIwanttowork onis on mymemoryon names.There were two
or three namesthat were impossibleforme torememberandIfeltawful aboutthat because
2. wheneverIhad to call themI had to say“you” and that wasn’tverynice since there were
students’namesthatIlearntby lesson2.
I will alwaysdothe thingsIdidwiththisgroup inthe future,givingthemreal life situationsthat
applyto the unitand contentthattheyare learning.Itmakesstudentsnotonlylearnthe language
but alsolearnitsreal usage,ina real context.Developingtheircommunicative skillsiskeysince
the truth isthat theyare goingto use Englishforfuture jobs,travelsanddayto day thingslike
watchinga movie orreadingan add,usingan app,etc.
I absolutelylovedteachinginHighSchool,itwassuch an enlighteningexperience.Ineverthought
that I wouldlike dealingwithteenagersbutIrealizedthatIreallydo.Theyare insuch an
interestingstage inlife,whatevertheychange inthemselves,will probablystickinthemforthe
restof theiradultlives.Theyare rebel aswell,butwhatcanbe more rewardingthatthe moment
whentheylettheirguarddownand getina real conversationordebate withyou?Ifeltamazed
withwhattheyhad to say.Today I can say that thisiswhat I wantto do withmylife andI feel
reallyhappyaboutit.
