Minerals Used in Renewable Energy
Technology
A number of minerals are used in solar and
wind energy harvesting, energy storage,
transportation and energy saving.
Concentrated Solar Power harvesting
requires mirrors and lances, which are
made up of low-iron silica sand.
Photovoltaic solar power requires quartz for
silicon based solar cells, silica sand for
solar glass, and silicon carbide to cut
wafers from silicon ingots. Wind Energy
harvesting requires fiberglass minerals
(Silica, feldspar, kaolin) for propellers and
Rare Earth Elements for magnets.
Lithium and graphite are needed for energy
storage (lithium-ion batteries)
A large number of other minerals such as
kaolin, barite, diatomite, bauxite, fluorite,
and rare minerals such as Ta, Nb and Cs
are also needed for renewable energy
technology and appliances.
Silica in Saudi Arabia
Commercial resources of silica sand in
Saudi Arabia are found as loosely
cemented sandstone with or without clay
intercalations. Some silica sand producers
have world class silica sand processing
facilities. Washing and classification
produces silica suitable for clear glass
manufacturing. There are many clear, float
glass, fiberglass and ceramics
manufacturers in Saudi Arabia. Mineral
Research and Beneficiation Centre (MRBC)
is actively working on silica sand upgrading
to produce silica for solar glass and mirrors.
Renewable Energy in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia is planning to build 41 GW
(25 GW of solar thermal, and 16 GW of
photovoltaics) solar capacity by 2040 (More
than the world leader, Germany). This
energy will be enough for about 20% of the
Kingdom’s projected electricity needs.
There are many small sized solar energy
projects are in progress in Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia is situated on the so called
solar belt the most suitable region for solar
energy harvesting.
Energy Storage
Energy harvested by solar and wind power,
can be used directly or stored in batteries.
Researchers are trying to find ways
towards affordable, long lasting, high
performance batteries for next generation
of electrical devices and vehicles. The new
batteries will have large storage capacity
as well as fast recharging. Minerals like
graphite and lithium are needed for these
batteries.
Quartz in Saudi Arabia
Commercially viable quartz resources are
recently investigated in Saudi Arabia.
Quartz resources suitable for silicon metal
manufacturing are found in Saudi Arabia.
Silicon metal is used in aluminum alloys,
producing solar and semi-conductor grade
silicon and producing silicon chemicals and
silicones. Quartz is also used to produce
high purity quartz (HPQ) for use in fiber
optics, high quality lenses, and laboratory
glass. Quartz for producing high purity
quartz is yet to be found in Saudi Arabia.
The role of Mineral Research and
Beneficiation Centre (MRBC) of Saudi
Geological Survey.
Mineral Research and Beneficiation Centre
(MRBC) is working on silica sand and
quartz beneficiation and evaluation for
Saudi Arabia’s future requirements. MRBC
provides all sorts of technical know-how
and assistance to Saudi minerals, mining
and manufacturing industries.
