3. Activation
Buildings set a new standard for social
space from both a human and functional
standpoint. There is a very active interior
core with larger atriums, new stairs, and
energetic traffic flow.
5. There is high-activity space and team neighborhoods
around the atrium to activate this hub space, creating
an energetic communal area. Views down hallways
and through departments allow employees to easily
“bump” into each other for spontaneous
collaboration.

6. These “hub” spaces are the right size for their use: not overly large, but
intimate and appropriately scaled for lively activity during the day.

7. Each building has unique destinations for special uses to drive more
movement within the district, like this “Maker Space” for engineers.

8. Whiteboards, tack boards, and “scrum spaces” give employees places to
pause and work while they’re on the go.

9. Microsoft Brand in
the Workplace:
The Design Language ensures the
brand is cohesively manifested in
the workplace, whether you are in
Beijing or Redmond.
10. The human component is very important for the Microsoft brand, so buildings have a warm, natural
Northwest look, full of reclaimed wood, an earthy color palette, and natural finishes. Slatted-wood
overhangs are both decorative and functional as visual organizers of space.

Spaces embody one of the Design Language principles—Alone and Together—with its juxtaposition
of areas built for collaboration and for heads-down focus. Employees are able to concentrate,
collaborate, and exist harmoniously in the same space.
12. Agility for Teams
Workplace research cites increased
collaboration and faster execution
as key benefits of being in team-
based space.
13. Workplace culture was transformed from closed private offices that sequestered employees, to a
dynamic team-based environment that supports a more agile working style.
14. Flexibility and hospitality were key drivers in furniture selection, as it must support a variety of
work styles, body types, and posture preferences.

15. Nature
Exposure to the outdoors is
scientifically proven to have a
positive and rejuvenating effect on
people. Microsoft embraces its
outdoor spaces as a benefit for
employees.
16. Located on a 500 acres campus, with plenty of trees and green space, connections to nature are
paramount. Decks, benches, gaming areas, and grassy plots invite outdoor collaboration and
reflection.
