Benefits of Focus Group Research Essay
Benefits of Focus Group Research Introduction:
Focus group research offers the unique opportunity for researchers to perceive an individual, and their opinions, not only in an exclusive situation,
but also as part of a group. Within a group there is a wealth of tacit and experiential knowledge from the outset as in the course of most people's lives
they will have interacted with other people in group situations. Bryman (2001) refers to the focused interview as the precept for focus group research,
'The original idea for the focus group– the focused interview– was that people who were known to have a certain experience could be interviewed in a
relatively unstructured way...show more content...
Finally, I will endeavour to consider the use of focus groups as a feminist research tool and as a means to research minority groups.
What is focus group research?
Traditional literature on focus groups suggests that there is a rigid set of rules that should be followed in their use. Greenbaum (1998) and Krueger
(1994) uphold the view that focus groups cannot function efficiently if these 'rules' are broken. They believe that the researcher should avoid complex
issues and sensitive data. In their view, it is also important that participants shouldn't know each other and that natural settings are rarely used. However,
I shall also be examining the research of Cohen and Garett (1999), which demonstrates the effectiveness of focus groups even when these 'regulations'
are not rigidly upheld. Krueger (1994) notes that the origins of focus groups (as used by social scientists) emerged in the late 1930s as a result of
increasing disillusionment in traditional methods of gathering information, such as interviewing, due to the restrictive nature of the influence of the
interviewer and the limitations of pre–determined and close–ended questions. Their aim was to

Focus On The Standardized Test Curriculum
Despite the United States being one of the most powerful, wealthy countries in the world, the US education system does not even rank in the top ten
educational systems in the world. The country has a graduation rate of 80%, yet students still are not prepared for the future. Schools in the United
States have become a place for nothing but learning how to memorize facts, take tests, and does not focus on preparing students for their futures. The
US educational system is limiting students, it needs to be more suited to the individual student's interests and begin to focus on actual learning.
Focusing on the standardized test curriculum takes away from the students actual learning and forces them to simply memorize the material for the

Advantages And Disadvantages Of A Focus
Is it possible to produce your best work without being focused in a moment? No, it's not. In today's world focus would be easily measured as the high
priority habit.
However, the reality is different. We need focus regularly, but we lack that one as well, to understand the problem, we need to understand the reality of
it, a better understanding will help us to improve our faults.
What is a focus?
How often you lose your concentration on your work? While you wish to complete the task thou you find yourself uninterested or not in the present
moment, even you do fall into the track of procrastination. This happens all due to the lack focus.
Focus is 'alertness' and a skill to concentrate on your goal or in a task that you want to do on a particular time or day or even on a lengthy process as
well.
Why we lose focus?
There are different kinds of factors works behind losing your focus some may start from your lifestyle or some may due to your...show more content...
However, if you could be able to reduce the amount of work it would be helpful for you. Organizations should have needed to take care of these by
themselves apart from making it impossible for the workers.
Breathe: Before you start any work, let the brain take some rest. Pick a place that is silent and peaceful and breathe in and breathe out awhile. Breathing
exercise will help you let go the stress off your mind and retain the calmness inside you.
Live Mindfully: Mindfulness is the practice of living in the present moment. Practice that mindfulness into your life on an everyday basis. Living with
present moment will help you let go of the unnecessary task and to focus on the present moment. It will also give you an awareness of your priorities.

Focus
Everyone has problems concentrating once in a while, moments when the words on the page don't seem nearly as interesting as one's own thoughts.
Most everyone has days when they feel an unexplained burst of exuberance or restlessness . Maybe it was a promotion or a messy break up, but the
work just wouldn't get done and not for lack of trying. Now imagine everyday like this, every day filled with frenetic energy that cannot seem to be
channeled into anything productive. Sure it might be fun for a while, but what about when you really need to get something done and it doesn't
happen. You go to clean your room, and six hours later there are still piles of clothing on the floor. You can't recall what it is that you've been doing all

Generally, the above symptoms are generally first noticed during early childhood. They are chronic, lasting in periods of at least six months at a
time, and are often present before the age of seven. The behaviors described in the criteria above are often seen as inappropriate for the age of the
child or adult and thus often result in the impairment of the child or adult's functioning in social situations such as school or on the job. This trouble
can lead a level of success markedly under what, according to their level of intelligence, they should be

Why Is Focus Important Essay
Many people have a hard time remembering things and are constantly looking for ways to improve short term memory. Some people believe that
taking medications and herbal supplements are the best way to help your brain to remember things easier. Much like a muscle, any amount of
medication will only be able to help your brain so much. It is up to you to work that muscle so that you can recall the things that you are trying to
desperately hard to remember. The Importance of Focus One of the biggest reasons that most people can't remember things and wish to improve
their short term memory is simply due to a lack of focus. Take this situation: you see an advertisement pop up on the television for a show that you
want to record later in the week. At the time it pops up you're getting yourself (and possibly children) ready to head out for the day and are thinking
about tons of other things. The advertisement comes on right before you turn the television off, so you make a "mental note" to record it when you
come home. The day goes by and you finally return home. This goes on for a few days until you realize that you never taped the show that you wanted
to see. What happened?...show more content...
Because you couldn't focus only on the advertisement, you were unable to remember it. A huge part of remembering things in your short term memory
rests on being able to focus on them in the first

Audience Focus Research Paper
Focus is a vital dramatic element in improvisational performance and without it the Performance lacks clarity and meaning. Focus can be achieved and
used in various ways with short improvised performances. These include:
1.Audience Focus
2.Actor Focus and
3.Focus of the Scene.
The implications of these types of focus can persuade or direct the audience where to look, it can help the actor to stay in character, as well as
memorize and recite the dialogue. Finally focus can play an essential role in explaining or conveying the purpose of the scene.
In improvisational performances focus directs the audience's attention to a particular character, prop or group. This is referred to as Audience Focus
and can be achieved in many ways. Some

My Strength Of Focus Analysis
In summarizing my mid–term paper, my strength of focus was discussed. The paper discussed how I set goals, focused on them, and achieved my
accomplishments of purchasing a home, purchasing a new roof for the home, and saving money for investments. In addition, my goals were listed in
the order of importance, photographed, saved in my cellular phone gallery as a reminder, and stationed in my bedroom in a frequently visited location
to be view daily. Next, I discussed how this strength could be acquired; one way is by minimizing distractions, such as social media, television shows,
and talking on the phone, etc. Furthermore, minimizing distractions aids in staying on course. As for accountability, keeping track of all your achieved

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Focus Group
Focus group is one of the most popular qualitative research methods for organizations to explore the feasibility of undecided plans, strategies or
products through group discussion. Around 6 – 10 of people with common or different characters, backgrounds, incomes, genders and ages will be
recruited to form a group. An agenda establishes by researcher will lead the direction of discussion. The result from the free, in–depth and on purpose
discussion can be a reference for determination of their future plan. Is focus group a good research method or not? It has been already discussed by the
academic community widely. Following there are five literature reviews to evaluate the characteristics, strengths and limitations of focus group.
There is no lack of definitions about what focus group actually is. As Vaughn and colleagues (1996) mentioned (as cited in Claudia & Jonathan,
2004), there are two main characteristics of focus group: a well prepared agenda and questions with a professional moderator and to obtain the
perceptions, feelings and opinions of participants appointed topic. Wilkinson (2004) also gave a simple definition on it (as cited in Pranee, 2011), "a
focus group is an informal discuss among a group of selected individuals about a particular topic". However, it is easy to mix up focus groups...show

It is welcomed by researchers because of its unique function. These five literature reviews briefly evaluate the definition, characteristics, preparation,
strengths and limitations of focus group. However, all of them are mainly focus on the traditional focus group, which is a face to face discussion. In
fact with the advance of internet, online focus group also becomes more and more popular. When comparing traditional focus group to online focus
group, their advantages and disadvantages can be easily observed. Therefore in the future books and articles will probably talk more about online focus

Focus Strengths
Blake, Focus is not my biggest weakness, but also is not my strength. I have observed in the past time and found those students who own an
excellent learning ability are always strength on focus. Because I cannot promise that I can keep focus on one thing in long time, so I always make
a list and plan to finish those. About the method of improve your focus, I agree with you that setting goals is one way to achieve that, but I think
doing a sport is also a good way, such as running, yoga and dancing. Because it can help you more focused on your work when you are not received a
lot of pressure from your plan.

Essay On FOCUS 2
"To succeed ... you need to find something to hold on to, something to motivate you, something to inspire you"–Tony Dorsett. Taking the FOCUS 2
assessment confirmed my decision about the major I decided to pursue. I had taken an assessment like the FOCUS 2 during high school, however,
I didn't choose a major based on what I liked and the traits I had, instead I choose it because of financial reasons. During my second semester of
college, I decided to switch majors. Pursuing a career in Human Services has given me that "something to hold on to". My values, personality, and
skills has been a huge factor in deciding that being a Social Worker is my dream job.
First, my values are present in my dream job. As a Social Worker, I will be able to utilize my values on the job. The value I feel strongly about is
Altruism, helping society. Being a Social Worker requires me to implement activities in the community for adolescents. I would like to work with
children and families that have been abused. I want to give to those children and families the resources they need. Influencing a child's behavior and
opinions is very important in the Social Work field. I want to be able to change many of the children I work with, in a more positive way. I know that
by working with families in need and vulnerable children, as I hope...show more content...
To be able to fully and effectively help my clients I must be able to have certain traits. As stated in the results of the assessment, I have a concern
about people. As a Social Worker, I must be able to make strong relationships with my clients. Having empathy for others will give me the ability to
work well in my job. In my results, it showed I liked to come up with different and new ways of doing things. This is very beneficial to being a
Social Worker because I need to find solutions to my clients' problems. To be an effective Social Worker, I must use some of my personality traits on the

Losing Focus
You will definitely accomplish more if you are always doing something. Being active is absolutely essential to accomplishing the maximum amount
of tasks. It will aid you in staying focused, you will not be at risk for becoming lazy and disinterested in everyday things, and if you are always
achieving, you will be extremely happy and satisfied for getting everything you want done. For example, I believe the more you accomplish, the more
focused you are, and focus is essential. When you are always focused on a particular task, it is very likely it will get done faster. Losing focus is
detrimental to productivity. When you put your full attention into something, it will be simple for you to complete it. Being focused helps you reach

Essay On Lack Of Focus
There are all always two types of students in this small world, first, the students that come ready to class with a three to five–page essay all proofread,
nice and stapled with three transition sentences highlighted turned. Second, there are those students who come to class with not even half of a paper
written out, unstapled, not a single transitional sentence highlighted and may have plenty of errors due to not proofreading the essay. Those second
group of students are procrastinators, which are people who delay an assignment to do the task right before the deadline. Now, why do most of all
99.99% of school boys and girls procrastinate? Well, most people might have problems with lack of focus, or the person might be lazy and decide to

To be frank, I had fallen into that pressure more than thousands of times. I would always say to myself that going out for a short time would not
hurt at all, but I learned that it did. Being distracted from my tasks was a bad idea because it would lead to having less time to work on the
assignment, and with that little time I was in a rush to finish. The fact that I was in a rush, led me to make the task sloppier than it would have been if
I did not go out with my friends.
An equally important cause for procrastinating could be the laziness one might have. For a college student, several amounts of homework could be
assigned within the first week of school, but the professor might state that those specific assignments to that class will be due at the end of the
semester. So, one would say to themselves that there is plenty of time not to worry, so the student kicks back and worries about other things. Once, the
end of the semester comes the person could have forgotten about the assignment that was given in the beginning of their school year. Now, there is
little time to get the tasks finished and turned in, while other teachers in other classes might have assigned homework for the same due date as the
other professor. Of course, at this point, the student regrets the decision that he or she might have made to procrastinate until a couple of days before
the due date, now the

Focus Learner Research Paper
I learned that my focus learner isn't able to communicate as much as I would like him to do, not because he isn't confident in his answers but because
he isn't confident in his pronunciation. His work shows that he knows what he is doing, but when I check for understanding verbally he second guesses
himself or doesn't finish saying a word in fear that he is saying it wrong. In terms of my teaching practice, I've learned that I need to be more patient
when waiting for my students to think on their own. Sometimes I want them to understand what is being taught so much that I try to make it easier by
hinting at things that may not benefit them in the end because I'm not letting my students think for themselves. Additionally, I learned that a little...show

I believe I addressed Social Commitment 3 in regards to demonstrating responsibility and ethical behavior in my practice and scholarship because I
believe as a teacher there's more to my job than making sure my students learn the material necessary to move to the next level, but I also make it my
duty to teach them about things outside of education that will allow them to see that no matter what they through or where they come from anything
is possible if they just try. It's good to spread encouragement and positivity in a world where there's constant negativity around you. Additionally, I
believe I addressed Pluralism 3 in regards to knowing a variety of approaches needed to educate different groups of learners because I'm aware of
student needs and have material for those who may need further assistance. Some students may need only one graphic organizer to simply outline their
ideas, while others may need guided notes to help formulate those ideas in an organized

Using Focus Groups In Qualitative Research
In today's society, at risk youths often face challenges when reaching out to adults regarding their personal situations, especially when it comes to them
wanting someone to understand their own perspectives. Therefore, it is important as a researcher to understand the different procedures to research,
especially when selecting an appropriate method to investigate a problem a community faces, such as with studying youths. As a result, a researcher
must follow the rule of thumb when designing their methods to avoid ethical issues in qualitative research as well as exploring different options to allow
youths to open up to an adult researcher. However, when considering this problem, the main goal for a researcher is to investigate what youths...show

In order to understand how this method can be used in this study, then it first must be explained. According to the text, Making Sense of the Social
World, focus groups are considered as, "a qualitative method that involves unstructured group interviews in which the focus group leader actively
encourages discussion among participants on the topics of interest" (Chambliss & Schutt, 2016, p. 220). Often times young adults are more open when
around others of their own age, this is the main reason I selected this method because an at–risk youth is going to be more comfortable answering
questions and sharing their opinions when around a group that shares similar characteristics or life situations compared to just a one–on–one
conversation between them and a researcher or amongst strangers. However, with this method there are also strengths and weaknesses when using
this method. The major strengths to focus groups are: they can save time and money compared to other methods, they provide participants the
opportunity to explain their viewpoints, it allows for participants to be more open and give clarification on their personal and group perceptions, and
they provide for a broad range of information and data to be collected from the sample. The disadvantages to focus groups are: they are hard to
manage among a large group, there can be disagreements or unnecessary conversations among participants that might take away from the main
questions being asked, and not everyone might what to participate or feel intimidated. Not only are their strengths and weaknesses, but also there is
also ethical concerns because it is an open group setting compared to other methods. Therefore, the main ethical concern with focus groups is that a
researcher has disclosed participants' identities to each other, which can be a concern particularly if there are sensitive topics being discussed among one

Focus Group Reflection Paper
Introduction
No matter the industry, communication plays a role unlike any other facet. It is a web, essentially, that is responsible for holding every other facet
together. Whether a publicly traded company, or a small local business, having a lack of effective communication can alter the path to success
tremendously. In order to gain a better understanding of this viable role in business, I held a focus group consisting of three men who own small
businesses in my hometown. The topic of discussion for our group was exactly that of the role communications plays in their given businesses, and the
many ways in which it has an affect. For small business owners especially, this role must never be overlooked when striving for success. These owners
seem to have a higher direct interaction rate with their customers...show more content...
I mentioned they should post flyers in the schools around town, offering small deals for the students. By doing so, I think word–of–mouth customers
would increase tremendously. These students tell their parents, and their parents tell their friends as well. It is a win–win situation.
Reflecting back on our focus group discussion, I really enjoyed my time spent with these three men. Given the commonalities the three share, I did not
incur any challenges in our group discussion. Having a focus group, as such, for any topic I think can be extremely beneficial for any matter worth
discussing; professionally or personally speaking.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I am grateful for my time spent with these three successful businessmen. Since I was young, I have wanted to be an entrepreneur. The
though of writing my own checks has always been inspiring to me. For my future endeavors, I now recognize the power of communication and the
viable role it plays in every business. I hope one day I can take what I learned from this focus group, and apply it to a business I call my

Benefits Of Focus Group Research Essay

  • 1. Benefits of Focus Group Research Essay Benefits of Focus Group Research Introduction: Focus group research offers the unique opportunity for researchers to perceive an individual, and their opinions, not only in an exclusive situation, but also as part of a group. Within a group there is a wealth of tacit and experiential knowledge from the outset as in the course of most people's lives they will have interacted with other people in group situations. Bryman (2001) refers to the focused interview as the precept for focus group research, 'The original idea for the focus group– the focused interview– was that people who were known to have a certain experience could be interviewed in a relatively unstructured way...show more content... Finally, I will endeavour to consider the use of focus groups as a feminist research tool and as a means to research minority groups. What is focus group research? Traditional literature on focus groups suggests that there is a rigid set of rules that should be followed in their use. Greenbaum (1998) and Krueger (1994) uphold the view that focus groups cannot function efficiently if these 'rules' are broken. They believe that the researcher should avoid complex issues and sensitive data. In their view, it is also important that participants shouldn't know each other and that natural settings are rarely used. However, I shall also be examining the research of Cohen and Garett (1999), which demonstrates the effectiveness of focus groups even when these 'regulations' are not rigidly upheld. Krueger (1994) notes that the origins of focus groups (as used by social scientists) emerged in the late 1930s as a result of increasing disillusionment in traditional methods of gathering information, such as interviewing, due to the restrictive nature of the influence of the interviewer and the limitations of pre–determined and close–ended questions. Their aim was to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Focus On The Standardized Test Curriculum Despite the United States being one of the most powerful, wealthy countries in the world, the US education system does not even rank in the top ten educational systems in the world. The country has a graduation rate of 80%, yet students still are not prepared for the future. Schools in the United States have become a place for nothing but learning how to memorize facts, take tests, and does not focus on preparing students for their futures. The US educational system is limiting students, it needs to be more suited to the individual student's interests and begin to focus on actual learning. Focusing on the standardized test curriculum takes away from the students actual learning and forces them to simply memorize the material for the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Advantages And Disadvantages Of A Focus Is it possible to produce your best work without being focused in a moment? No, it's not. In today's world focus would be easily measured as the high priority habit. However, the reality is different. We need focus regularly, but we lack that one as well, to understand the problem, we need to understand the reality of it, a better understanding will help us to improve our faults. What is a focus? How often you lose your concentration on your work? While you wish to complete the task thou you find yourself uninterested or not in the present moment, even you do fall into the track of procrastination. This happens all due to the lack focus. Focus is 'alertness' and a skill to concentrate on your goal or in a task that you want to do on a particular time or day or even on a lengthy process as well. Why we lose focus? There are different kinds of factors works behind losing your focus some may start from your lifestyle or some may due to your...show more content... However, if you could be able to reduce the amount of work it would be helpful for you. Organizations should have needed to take care of these by themselves apart from making it impossible for the workers. Breathe: Before you start any work, let the brain take some rest. Pick a place that is silent and peaceful and breathe in and breathe out awhile. Breathing exercise will help you let go the stress off your mind and retain the calmness inside you. Live Mindfully: Mindfulness is the practice of living in the present moment. Practice that mindfulness into your life on an everyday basis. Living with present moment will help you let go of the unnecessary task and to focus on the present moment. It will also give you an awareness of your priorities.

Most everyone has days when they feel an unexplained burst of exuberance or restlessness . Maybe it was a promotion or a messy break up, but the work just wouldn't get done and not for lack of trying. Now imagine everyday like this, every day filled with frenetic energy that cannot seem to be channeled into anything productive. Sure it might be fun for a while, but what about when you really need to get something done and it doesn't happen. The behaviors described in the criteria above are often seen as inappropriate for the age of the child or adult and thus often result in the impairment of the child or adult's functioning in social situations such as school or on the job. • 7. Why Is Focus Important Essay Many people have a hard time remembering things and are constantly looking for ways to improve short term memory. Some people believe that taking medications and herbal supplements are the best way to help your brain to remember things easier. Much like a muscle, any amount of medication will only be able to help your brain so much. It is up to you to work that muscle so that you can recall the things that you are trying to desperately hard to remember. The Importance of Focus One of the biggest reasons that most people can't remember things and wish to improve their short term memory is simply due to a lack of focus. Take this situation: you see an advertisement pop up on the television for a show that you want to record later in the week. At the time it pops up you're getting yourself (and possibly children) ready to head out for the day and are thinking about tons of other things. The advertisement comes on right before you turn the television off, so you make a "mental note" to record it when you come home. The day goes by and you finally return home. This goes on for a few days until you realize that you never taped the show that you wanted to see. What happened?...show more content... Because you couldn't focus only on the advertisement, you were unable to remember it. • 10. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Focus Group Focus group is one of the most popular qualitative research methods for organizations to explore the feasibility of undecided plans, strategies or products through group discussion. Around 6 – 10 of people with common or different characters, backgrounds, incomes, genders and ages will be recruited to form a group. An agenda establishes by researcher will lead the direction of discussion. The result from the free, in–depth and on purpose discussion can be a reference for determination of their future plan. Is focus group a good research method or not? It has been already discussed by the academic community widely. Following there are five literature reviews to evaluate the characteristics, strengths and limitations of focus group. There is no lack of definitions about what focus group actually is. As Vaughn and colleagues (1996) mentioned (as cited in Claudia & Jonathan, 2004), there are two main characteristics of focus group: a well prepared agenda and questions with a professional moderator and to obtain the perceptions, feelings and opinions of participants appointed topic. Wilkinson (2004) also gave a simple definition on it (as cited in Pranee, 2011), "a focus group is an informal discuss among a group of selected individuals about a particular topic". • 12. Essay On FOCUS 2 "To succeed ... you need to find something to hold on to, something to motivate you, something to inspire you"–Tony Dorsett. Taking the FOCUS 2 assessment confirmed my decision about the major I decided to pursue. I had taken an assessment like the FOCUS 2 during high school, however, I didn't choose a major based on what I liked and the traits I had, instead I choose it because of financial reasons. During my second semester of college, I decided to switch majors. Pursuing a career in Human Services has given me that "something to hold on to". My values, personality, and skills has been a huge factor in deciding that being a Social Worker is my dream job. First, my values are present in my dream job. As a Social Worker, I will be able to utilize my values on the job. The value I feel strongly about is Altruism, helping society. Being a Social Worker requires me to implement activities in the community for adolescents. I would like to work with children and families that have been abused. I want to give to those children and families the resources they need. Influencing a child's behavior and opinions is very important in the Social Work field. • 14. Essay On Lack Of Focus There are all always two types of students in this small world, first, the students that come ready to class with a three to five–page essay all proofread, nice and stapled with three transition sentences highlighted turned. Second, there are those students who come to class with not even half of a paper written out, unstapled, not a single transitional sentence highlighted and may have plenty of errors due to not proofreading the essay. Those second group of students are procrastinators, which are people who delay an assignment to do the task right before the deadline. Now, why do most of all 99.99% of school boys and girls procrastinate? Well, most people might have problems with lack of focus, or the person might be lazy and decide to ...show more content... To be frank, I had fallen into that pressure more than thousands of times. I would always say to myself that going out for a short time would not hurt at all, but I learned that it did. Being distracted from my tasks was a bad idea because it would lead to having less time to work on the assignment, and with that little time I was in a rush to finish. The fact that I was in a rush, led me to make the task sloppier than it would have been if I did not go out with my friends. An equally important cause for procrastinating could be the laziness one might have. For a college student, several amounts of homework could be assigned within the first week of school, but the professor might state that those specific assignments to that class will be due at the end of the semester. So, one would say to themselves that there is plenty of time not to worry, so the student kicks back and worries about other things. Once, the end of the semester comes the person could have forgotten about the assignment that was given in the beginning of their school year. Now, there is little time to get the tasks finished and turned in, while other teachers in other classes might have assigned homework for the same due date as the other professor. Of course, at this point, the student regrets the decision that he or she might have made to procrastinate until a couple of days before the due date, now the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 16. Focus Learner Research Paper I learned that my focus learner isn't able to communicate as much as I would like him to do, not because he isn't confident in his answers but because he isn't confident in his pronunciation. His work shows that he knows what he is doing, but when I check for understanding verbally he second guesses himself or doesn't finish saying a word in fear that he is saying it wrong. In terms of my teaching practice, I've learned that I need to be more patient when waiting for my students to think on their own. It's good to spread encouragement and positivity in a world where there's constant negativity around you. Additionally, I believe I addressed Pluralism 3 in regards to knowing a variety of approaches needed to educate different groups of learners because I'm aware of student needs and have material for those who may need further assistance. • 19. Using Focus Groups In Qualitative Research In today's society, at risk youths often face challenges when reaching out to adults regarding their personal situations, especially when it comes to them wanting someone to understand their own perspectives. Therefore, it is important as a researcher to understand the different procedures to research, especially when selecting an appropriate method to investigate a problem a community faces, such as with studying youths. As a result, a researcher must follow the rule of thumb when designing their methods to avoid ethical issues in qualitative research as well as exploring different options to allow youths to open up to an adult researcher. However, when considering this problem, the main goal for a researcher is to investigate what youths...show more content... In order to understand how this method can be used in this study, then it first must be explained. According to the text, Making Sense of the Social World, focus groups are considered as, "a qualitative method that involves unstructured group interviews in which the focus group leader actively encourages discussion among participants on the topics of interest" (Chambliss & Schutt, 2016, p. 220). Often times young adults are more open when around others of their own age, this is the main reason I selected this method because an at–risk youth is going to be more comfortable answering questions and sharing their opinions when around a group that shares similar characteristics or life situations compared to just a one–on–one conversation between them and a researcher or amongst strangers. However, with this method there are also strengths and weaknesses when using this method. The major strengths to focus groups are: they can save time and money compared to other methods, they provide participants the opportunity to explain their viewpoints, it allows for participants to be more open and give clarification on their personal and group perceptions, and they provide for a broad range of information and data to be collected from the sample. The disadvantages to focus groups are: they are hard to manage among a large group, there can be disagreements or unnecessary conversations among participants that might take away from the main questions being asked, and not everyone might what to participate or feel intimidated. Not only are their strengths and weaknesses, but also there is also ethical concerns because it is an open group setting compared to other methods. Therefore, the main ethical concern with focus groups is that a researcher has disclosed participants' identities to each other, which can be a concern particularly if there are sensitive topics being discussed among one Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 21. Focus Group Reflection Paper Introduction No matter the industry, communication plays a role unlike any other facet. It is a web, essentially, that is responsible for holding every other facet together. Whether a publicly traded company, or a small local business, having a lack of effective communication can alter the path to success tremendously. In order to gain a better understanding of this viable role in business, I held a focus group consisting of three men who own small businesses in my hometown. The topic of discussion for our group was exactly that of the role communications plays in their given businesses, and the many ways in which it has an affect. For small business owners especially, this role must never be overlooked when striving for success. These owners seem to have a higher direct interaction rate with their customers...show more content... These students tell their parents, and their parents tell their friends as well. It is a win–win situation. Reflecting back on our focus group discussion, I really enjoyed my time spent with these three men. Given the commonalities the three share, I did not incur any challenges in our group discussion. Having a focus group, as such, for any topic I think can be extremely beneficial for any matter worth discussing; professionally or personally speaking. Conclusion In conclusion, I am grateful for my time spent with these three successful businessmen. Since I was young, I have wanted to be an entrepreneur. The though of writing my own checks has always been inspiring to me. For my future endeavors, I now recognize the power of communication and the viable role it plays in every business.
