On March 16, 1968, over 300 unarmed civilians were killed in South Vietnam during an indiscriminate, mass murder event known as the My Lai
Massacre. Conducted by a unit of the United States Army, the My Lai Massacre ranked one of most appalling atrocities carried out by US forces in
an already savage and violent war. All victims involved were unarmed civilians, many of which were women, children, and the elderly. Victims were
raped, tortured and beaten, even mutilated before being killed. The massacre was forever seared into the hearts and minds of the American people as

Spearheaded by Second Lieutenant William Calley and his platoon, US forces began attacking human and animal targets alike. Men, women and
children were killed indiscriminately with firearms, grenades and bayonets. After the initial attack, backup forces came in and dealt with the "remaining
resistance," killing every living person they could find. Although most soldiers did not or refused to participate in the My Lai Massacre, they neither
resisted nor attempt to prevent the killings.
Conversely, a few men, namely Warrant Officer Hugh Thompson Jr. and his crew, actively saved as many civilians as they could. Thomson, a
helicopter pilot from an aerial scouting team, witnessed the horrific massacre being carried out below him. Thompson soon landed by a nearby bunker
where a group of civilians were taking refuge and evacuated them to safety (Thompson was later awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross).
Initially, the first reports stated that over 100 Vietcong were killed along with 22 civilian casualties caught in the crossfire during the fierce firefight.
The operation was seen as a military victory and a strategic success. General William C. Westmoreland even congratulated involved forces for doing
an "outstanding job." However, letters of distraught and remorse from servicemen and soldiers that were previously engaged in the My Lai operation

The Mexican tile roofs jump out at your eyes, until the gorgeous iron gates of other estates snatch your attention. I can at times be overwhelmed with

Although living in the city has many advantages there are some disadvantages too, the cost of the living is very high in the city, the city is always

Since the dawning of Covington Woods' creation, stories were told of terrifying creatures that lived in the forests. Beasts that were attracted to the
color red and repelled by yellow and so traditions began of avoiding red even to the point of burying crimson flowers that blossomed. Stakes with
yellow flags marked the perimeter of the village and those who kept watch wore cloaks of yellow. Overall the affect was very convincing and the

I was raised up believing in the importance of service and community as I saw my family members and neighbors selflessly help and be in
community with people in need. It is therefore no surprise that I discovered my passion for service and volunteerism while still young. In my

village as there were better–structured homes. While I was at my grandparent's house from my mom's side, my mom's siblings came over to visit as

My Village Life
Growing up in the city of Lagos Nigeria where everything is immensely distinct in comparison with parts of the country with a fast pace flow of
things, with people from every ethnic group and religion you could never feel isolated in Lagos it almost reminds me of New York City vibe filled
with clustered building and congested with an abundance of people. One evening we received news that we would be heading to the village to visit
family and at last go, to the farm we heard so much about my dad is from the village known as IVIUKHUA which is located in Edo state nicknamed
the heartbeat of Nigeria. See compared to the city life the village life was rough but my grandparents seem to love it and I remember visiting them
ever so often you know you know you were in the village once you start to notice the absence of electricity poles that alone gives you an idea of
what a day to day would be in the village. The village consisted of several walking distance towns and villagers tend to spend their everyday lives
tending to their crops in farms. I learned so much in such a short time at the farm
It was a lovely Sunday morning on August 7, 2005 it was a much–anticipated trip filled with excitement and joy it was about six of us (my mother,
father, siblings, our driver and I ) all dressed in protective gear drenched in bug spray to prevent mosquito bites, at the time malaria was very
common. We were riding in a white Isuzu 4wd drive 2000 model pickup truck which I remember vividly.

Stranger In The Village Summary "When, beneath the black mask, a human being begins to make himself felt one cannot escape a certain awful
wonder as to what kind of human being it is."(4). In his essay, "Stranger in the Village", James Baldwin writes about the major differences that African
Americans experience in Europe and America. Throughout the essay, Baldwin describes how the Europeans are naive about the black man. The
outrage and amusement that Baldwin feels throughout his visit causes the overwhelming realization of the history of the African American. Before
arriving in a small village in Switzerland, Baldwin had already been told that his presence would be startling because black people were rarely seen.
The children would scream "Neger!"(2) when they saw him passing, men sometimes blamed him for stealing, and most of the woman looked away
when he was in sight. He felt an innocence to their genuine wonder and that they didn't mean to be unkind or racist. Baldwin states that being in the
village, he felt he "was simply a living wonder" (2) and not treated as a human being. The people touched him as if his skin color would rub off and

Americans. The unintentional racism that he faced in the small village led to his awareness of how degrading thoughts of non–whites occur in parts of

Descriptive Essay About My Neighborhood
In between the busy streets of 35th avenue and 43rd lies my silent and kind neighborhood. Where everyone is nice to each other and not lousy or
mean. About two months ago, my mother bought our first home. My house looks like a duplex because there are two entrances, one on the left and
right and it also has two drive ways. Turning into my neighborhood you right away see that it is a dead end street, and has very few houses one each
side of the road. There is not really anything that grabs one's attention where I live, except a 2017 mustang that is parked next door, or how many stray
cats there live here.. Other than that a true attention catcher is our neighbors well kept yard. They have bushes along the driveway shaped into a
beautiful square. And colorful flowers in their neat front yard. Their grass is also much greener than anyone else's. You can tell they care about their
yard a lot because they have a landscaper come every week. There are also two schools that are across the street, a charter high school that is to the
left of an elementary school. What I do like about my neighborhood is that the streets are very wide, wider than usual which gives everyone an
advantage. It was so convenient that we lived right across the street from an elementary school. I thought to myself "I have younger siblings that could
go there!" But they really couldn't – the school is only from 1st–5th grade and my sisters were just in 6th and 7th grade. In the mornings are usually
