EDITO
Dear all,
For its 10th edition, the EUROPEAN UTILITY WEEK exhibition is taking place for
the first time in Paris, in conjunction with POWERGEN Europe. France is honored
to host these key international events in the energy sector. Together, they aim to
become the leading European exhibition for energy transition, with 18 000 visitors
expected.
To succeed in this energy transition challenge, cooperation between all
stakeholders is a key issue. The European Utility Week is a unique opportunity to
connect the entire smart energy ecosystem and discuss the means through which
an efficient and low carbon energy transition can be attained.
France has made a strong commitment to the energy transition. After having
banned the exploration of hydrocarbon deposits in France through the 2017
hydrocarbon law, the French government is pushing for the closure of the last
coal-fired power plants in France by 2022, the implementation of a «National Low
Carbon Strategy», as well as financial aid to encourage consumers to switch to
electric vehicles or abandon oil-fired boilers. The climate and energy law adopted
in September sets a «net zero emission» target for France by 2050 and the bill
contains various measures to support the development of renewable energies.
Smart grids have a key role to play in this energy transition, by allowing the
massive integration of distributed and intermittent renewable energy sources
into the grid, and supporting the development of electric vehicles, multi-energy
networks, smart buildings and smart cities. Through microgrids, smart grids also
enable quality access to renewable energy, for example on islands in Asia and
remote places in Africa.
The association Think Smartgrids, that federates the French smart grid ecosystem,
will be present on the French Pavilion with Business France to introduce you to
the key smart grids stakeholders in France, from startups to large groups, utilities,
clusters or professional associations. On November 14th and 15th, visitors will also
have opportunity to visit some of Europe’s leading smart grid sites and showrooms
in Paris, Nantes, Rennes and Amiens. Five thematic “guided tours” will hence focus
on the integration of renewable energies, electric mobility, hydrogen for storage,
smart gas and biogas, or positive and modular energy territories.
Last but not least, the French Ministry for Ecological and Solidarity Transition,
Think Smartgrids, and Chinese, Indian and Italian co-leads have joined forces to
organize the 6th sessions of the IC1 Mission Innovation smart grids conference at
the EUW, on the afternoon of the 12th. Industrial players will present their solutions
to fight climate change during this event.
We look forward to meeting you at the French Pavilion to discuss new
opportunities and build together a low carbon and efficient energy system.

ENEDIS
France is extremely proud to host, for the first
time, the European Utility Week.
This year, EUW will be echoing the new EU
electricity Market design legislation, formally
adopted and published a few months ago. With
regard to France, the new energy and climate law
sets out ambitious targets for the next decade
for renewable energies, with about 75 GW of
wind and photovoltaic installed capacity by
2028 – the overwhelming majority of which will
be connected to the distribution grid. In parallel,
new uses of electricity such as e-mobility are being
encouraged.
DSOs are key players in these developments. I
have full confidence in our collective industrial
strengths to meet the exciting challenges of
integrating new renewable energy sources into
the distribution grid, and to enable the wide-
scale transition to e-mobility, particularly through
the already ongoing deployment of smart grids
solutions.
Already today, innovative offers from energy
suppliers are multiplying, based on our LinkyTM
smart meter, the deployment of which has been
steadily progressing in 2019, reaching 22 million
units throughout France. LinkyTM is also a key
element in the development of individual and
collective self-consumption projects, which
have doubled last year, or for smart charging
solutions for electric vehicles. We believe this
will considerably accelerate the empowerment
of market players, first and foremost customers
- consistent with the ambition of European
legislation and new electricity market rules,
which put consumers at the heart of the energy
transition.
In this edition of EUW, Enedis will also be
showcasing Artificial intelligence and data
processing solutions, already operational for our
grid management.
Every European citizen, economic, private or
public actor, must be able to become a player in
the energy transition, by accessing the necessary
tools, solutions and services under economically
and socially acceptable conditions.
Power Utilities have the responsibility to offer
solutions and deliver services at a lower cost. This
requires a resolute and permanent drive towards
more innovation. Enedis is proud to keep up with
that spirit and to showcase it all along those three
days at European Utility Week.
