Nearly three in five American workers are paid hourly wages, but employee engagement has dropped for hourly workers from 2010 to 2012. While businesses benefit from hourly hiring, employees are less satisfied with it. To motivate hourly employees, companies need to communicate how jobs provide purpose, opportunity for mastery of skills, and autonomy, as these factors drive engagement more than power and responsibility. Gamification techniques that address core motivations and illustrate success can be effective ways to engage and develop hourly staff.
