Conventions of short films
1.
2. Because of the nature of the time scale, short films usually have one event
which escalates quite quickly and gets to the point. With short films you
don’t know what’s necessarily going to happen, so you expect the
unexpected. However, not all short films have a climatic convention
and often leave the audience left to predict for themselves what
happened in the end. An example of a no climax convention would be
‘dead meat’. In the short film, a man is asked by his wife/girlfriend to
cook a meal for his in-laws and only knows at late notice so has to make
to with what he can find to get food in. There is no climax because the
story doesn’t really build. You see the character go to many lengths to
get ingredients for a meal as all shops are closed, resulting with him
eventually substituting a traditional meat, with a not so sanitary dead
squirrel from the road. When it gets to the end and the meal is
served, you expect the in-laws to notice or make comment on whats
been served, but the film just ends and youre left wondering what
happened during them eating the food. Having no real climax is a
clever convention for a short film as because you werent really
expecting anything, you dont mind thinking for youself what happens in
the end. However if you were to watch a feature length film for it to just
end with no explanation, you would really appreciate it and you would
want to know exactly what happened instead of second guessing.
3. ‘Amys Torch’ is a horror/thriller and has typical
conventions of the genre, such as fast cutting
techniques, low lighting and eerie music, along
with typical conventional sound effects which
all bring tension to the viewer/audience. ‘Amys
torch’ has a typical conventional ending which
can easily be predicted and is common with
horror/thrillers. The fear of making a
thriller/horror is that they can often be
predictable which makes an anti climax
because you predict whats going to happen,
however, this is how effective mise en scene
aspects and sound effects help and make the
climax more effective.
4. Sound is a vital part of any short film as
often they don't involve any dialogue
so the use of scores, sound tracks,
background music and ambient
sound is very important
5. 'La Luna' is a great example of showing how
important and effective sound effects and
scores can be. Throughout the short
film, little conversational aspects occur and
when they do they’re phatic utterances so
don’t form complete sentences, however
still make sense due the visuals and the
sound effects used alongside them. The
score emphasises the rise and falls of the
climatic events and encourages the
magical feel of the whole film and makes it
more fantasised
6. ‘identity’ is another example of a short film
which doesn’t use much dialogue and shows
that it can be effective and that in some cases
you understand and emphasise more without
any speech and emotion and feel
Throughout, the score rises and falls along with
the feelings and emotions of the character, for
example when she finally gets rid of the mask
and walks through the school halls confidently.
Again, sound effects such as a school bell is
used to make more sense of what is going
on, in this instance you know the location
because of the conventional sound.
7. Juxtaposition is a clever convention which can be
pulled off well in a short film. ‘Love field’ is a great
example of juxtaposition and watching something
that you weren’t expecting. At the beginning, you
think that a woman is in pain and that a man has
caused her discomfort. This is portrayed and
supported by the use of the tense score and
effective cutting which doesnt show the whole
picture but makes you pre-judge whats going on. The
connotations of death also support that the woman is
in danger or infact dead, such as a the use of the
black crow.Clever cutting and editing also supports
the idea of the woman being in trouble. Juxtaposition
is a clever convention and is an effective way to
make use of the time scale of a short film
8. A narrator is a common convention for a short film and can
make it an easy watch as it narrates exactly whats going on as
youre watching. A Narrative can portray genre by the voice. For
example, if its a monotone voice, its more likely to be
serious, where as a more happy, uplifting voice is most likely to
be a comedy or a feel-good film. In the short film ‘Late bloomer’
the narrative is well written and goes well with the visuals. The
Narator is telling his own story so we see his personal experiences
and understand it from his own words and point of view. The
narrative is done very dramatically about the event in which he
went through at school. The dramatic effect in which he speaks
supports that what he’s talking about happened in the past a
long time ago and when youre younger you emphasise and
dramatise a lot of things – things seem worse than they are.
Having a narrative is a clever convention in a short film as you
can literally tell the story to support the visuals so the audience
and viewers understand whats going on and the story straight
away as long as the narrative voice and tone goes well with the
genre to make more sense and give a good effect.
