As an Iowa City native, I’m proud to know that representative Dave Loebsack is a supporter of peace.
Loebsack is one of 151 members of Congress who signed a letter to President Obama showing their support
for peaceful negotiations in Iran.
On May 4, I attended the NonProliferation Treaty Conference in New York as a representative for Global Zero,
and had the opportunity to discuss the role that nuclear weapons play in today’s society. There was a
consensus that nuclear weapons pose the largest threat to human rights in the entire world. However, due to
the lack of progress being made toward disarmament by the U.S. and Russia, many officials of other countries
view the development of nuclear weapons as an important security measure.
The misconception that nuclear weapons are a means of safety must be broken. Peaceful negotiations between the U.S. and Iran would help restore
support for disarmament worldwide. In order to achieve peace and security for all, the U.S. must take the lead in negotiating and upholding agreements
surrounding nuclear weapons. It is important to understand that the only reasonable way to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons is through
peaceful negotiations.
