Brianna Stahl volunteered with her field hockey team to help build a house for Habitat for Humanity in Cincinnati, Ohio on February 28, 2015. She learned basic building skills before helping construct the home. Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit that builds homes for people in need regardless of attributes. It relies on donations and homeowners' mortgage payments to fund their work building homes for over 1 million families since 1976 with over 1 million volunteers worldwide. Brianna suggests better preparing first-time volunteers for tasks and implementing a nutrition program to help families receiving homes find affordable healthy options.

Report 12: Volunteer Project
On February 28, 2015, I did my volunteer work with my field hockey team at
Habitat for Humanity in Cincinnati, Ohio from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. The volunteer
coordinator who we went through was Monica Human and the weekend coordinator who
we worked with was Emma Stuefen. Operations are ran and organized by trained
building supervisors at each site. We arrived on site at 8:20 a.m. to be debriefed. After
learning how to work power tools and other basic building skills, we were thrown in head
first to help build a house for a family in need.
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, Christian ministry that builds homes for
people in need regardless of race or religion. With 1,400 local branches in the United
States and more than 70 others around the world thousands of volunteers are building
everyday. Funded by donations and their partner homeowners’ monthly mortgage
payments, Habitat for Humanity has over 1 million volunteers, and has helped 1 million
families since 1976.
I think having more fundraising opportunities for college students would be a
good way to spread the word, gain more donations, and even volunteer work. As for
running the operation more efficiently I would suggest better preparing volunteers for
what they are doing. This was my first time volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and
it was hard to get into the groove of things because I had never used power tools and I
didn’t know how I could help.
2. As far as charity needs, Habitat for Humanity is always looking for volunteers and
donations to help fund their projects. Their major successes thus far have been serving
over 5 million people worldwide. Not only helping locally in The United States, but also
helping others across the world.
With my interest in dietetics, I could propose an idea to Habitat for Humanity
regarding an nutrition program for the families receiving homes. Perhaps sitting down
with the family and helping them find affordable but healthy foods. This volunteer work
was an eye opener and I plan to volunteer with them in the near future.
