My experience
● iPhone 8+, 12GB per month data plan
● High speed fibre internet at my home
● Canada has net neutrality and no
censorship or internet shutdowns
● 61 apps – use these for transportation,
banking, music, communication (personal
and work), user research, crypto, travel
● Always connected, unless in a remote area
(i.e. camping). Even when travelling, I pay
$7-12 per day, depending which country
I’m in, to use my phone like normal.

○ Use internet as a scarce resource, because your users do too

How to design products for offline users
● Make sure your app still provides value when offline.
● Watch how you are using internet resources - every MB is a cost to
your users.
● Test your app in low bandwidth conditions, on a range of devices.
● Minimize the size or number of updates that are required
● Allow content to be downloaded to view offline later (slow
connections mean people want to be doing other tasks instead of
just waiting).
● Consider integrating alternative connectivity solution (i.e. mesh
networks).
● Build with your users, not for them.
