Dear Hiring Team,
My name is Brent Myers, and I am interested in being a part of your company team. My passion to help people
and improve their lives through engineering makes me excited to graduate in April. At that time I will have a dual
degree in biomedical and mechanical engineering from Michigan Technological University. In addition to the
knowledge and skills I have developed as a result of five years of college, I have also had three different
internships in the engineering industry—Worxsimple, Plexus Corp, and Alion Science and Technology. My
internships have focused in design and test applications and the skills I have gained in industry as well as the
technical knowledge through school make me a highly qualified candidate that will fit your needs.
At Worxsimple, I was an engineering intern who was responsible for multiple projects throughout my term. Using
SolidWorks, I designed and then built tables needed in a work cell manufacturing operation for the assembly of
internal feeding tubes. I collaborated with engineers and managers at Kimberly-Clark and provided process-flow
documentation on the work cell to show that production needs would be met. This was performed for two
different work cell operations, each requiring a unique solution. Another project involved the continuous
improvement of existing automated equipment. For an automated feeding tube balloon cutter,I designed and
implemented a switch to close off one end of the tube to prevent leakage of air to achieve consistent inflation and
improve slicing of the tube.
At Plexus Corp, as a mechanical engineering intern, I was given the responsibility to test an automated medication
dispensing bin on the Cerner RXStation. Using an automated controller, the rotation function of the bin was
simulated in order to test the mechanical and electrical components and identify failures and determine long-term
solutions to these failures. The oscilloscope display of the sensor activity allowed for the mechanical and
electrical components to be related and determine where a failure occurred. Improvement to the mechanical
components and software were made that increased the cycle limit on the bin from 500 cycles to failure to above
10,000 cycles to failure.
At Alion Science & Technology my role as a mechanical engineering intern involved a heavy design role on
multiple projects. One project involved the redesign of components on a blade folding kit on the Apache
helicopter. Redesign of the components involved part changes using Creo Parametric, development of detail
drawings according to GD&T standards and discussion with manufacturers to machine parts up to specifications.
Another project involved the design of a rack that would secure the stabilator wing of the Apache Helicopter
during transport. Brainstorming of possible designs occurred with an engineering team and then my responsibility
involved generating the overall design in Creo Parametric with heavy consideration in cost savings through
simplicity and ease of manufacturing.
My growth at Michigan Technological University as an aspiring engineer cannot be measured simply by the
technical knowledge and experiences mentioned in the above three paragraphs. At MTU, I was the president of
the club basketball team, worked as a certified basketball referee, and enjoyed the thrill of learning to ski black
diamond slopes. I have traveled to California, Utah, and Michigan for interviews and internships and look
forward to pursuing activities that make me a better person. At your company I will exemplify this by investing
my time in learning and solving problems. It won’t simply be about the projects, but about the culture and the
people in which I can learn from. I believe it is this positive growth mindset, along with my technical skills and
experience that make me an excellent asset who can contribute to your company. My resume is attached, and I
respectfully ask for the opportunity to interview with you at your earliest convenience.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to speaking with you soon.
Sincerely,
Brent Myers
