The Summit
1. The Summit:
Conquering the Bar Exam and CPA Exam
By Brent Alexander Newton
“Go climb the mountain,” my friends all said. “There will be treasure, gold and red.”
To the base of the mountain, I caught a ride, a fortnight’s’ journey across the tide.
From the mountain’s feet, I saw the sky. “You’ll never make it,” I heard it cry, “The
mountain will crush you and then you’ll die.”
Like a mighty blade, I swung my pick, deep into the mountain’s grit. One by one as up a
ladder, my feet ascended, the winds grew madder.
Murmuring with a husky voice, the mountain made a terrible noise.
Holding on like a mountain cat, I felt much more like a helpless rat. Blinded by the wind
and snow, the mountain’s anger, I felt it grow.
Halfway up the side I saw the summit ledge begin to thaw. Bears and wolves tore at my
jacket. Their howls made a terrible racket.
My fellow climbers, I saw them fall. I felt my strength begin to stall.
Without a thought, I dodged a boulder, which nearly cracked my arm and shoulder.
The mountain roared with great frustration. The cold was no match for my insulation.
With a final blow, I drove my axe between the shoulders of the mountain’s back.
I lifted myself onto the peak. My body was weary I heard it creak.
I had reached the summit and I smelled the air. I looked around, but nothing was there.
Then I looked down at the valley below. I realized that I had much to show.
I had conquered the mountain and I survived. The real treasure was that I was still alive.
