- Quantum computers pose a threat to the cryptocurrency, bitcoin, and other encryption security. Conventional computers use bits coded in a binary system using only 0âs and 1âs, whereas Quantum computers use qubits and force electrons into superposition - allowing the electrons to use both 0 and 1 at the same time exponentially increasing its processing speed Calculations that would take a conventional supercomputer millions of years would take a quantum computer only seconds to complete.
- Quantum computers will potentially break not only the public key of the Bitcoin, but also the private key of the Bitcoin owner. The quantum computer uses precision and massive calculating speed to mine more than a conventional computer can and then crack Bitcoinâs cryptographic keys. Messaging apps, SSL certificates and data storage would all also pose potential security issues with the quantum computer. Bitcoin may have time to improve its security because it could take years before a quantum computer is ready to compete. However, even if Bitcoin triples their encryption codes it is possible that the quantum computer still may be able to crack the code within minutes.

What about missile codes for warfare?  The future is still unknown as we begin to tap into quantum computing.
