2. โข As a result of human interaction with turfgrass lawns, there is a major
contribution to air, soil, noise, and water pollution.
3. โข Many people prefer turfgrass lawns due to convenience, but the reality is
they bring on a lot of unnecessary challenges for our environment.
4. โข Turf requires a lot of water; it canโt be ok with just rainwater or it will die. As a result, it
causes many Americans to use so much water just gardening, with roughly 17,500 gallons
being used each year for gardening alone.
5. โข Turfgrass requires a lot of upkeep, which ends up causing pollution. It needs fertilizer,
insecticide, herbicide, all of which produces air pollution. Also, turfgrass contributes to
pollution even more when it is decomposed anaerobically, as it releases large amounts of
methane, a greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere.
6. โข Lawn clippings and runoffs carry pesticides with them into water streams that end up killing
fish and other wildlife.
7. โข There are obviously a lot of problems with turfgrass, so I will propose some solutions. The
first one is to replace the turfgrass with a slow-growing grass called dwarf mondo grass. It
requires much less water and grooming in general and is much better for the environment.
8. โข Another possible solution to this problem would be to replace the turfgrass with a rock
garden. Although it would be expensive, there is a lot less watering and general
maintenance as a lot of the lawn would be rocks. This one is also great for the environment.
9. โข The final solution I produced was to rip out the turfgrass and put in artificial turf. The turf
doesnโt require any water or much maintenance, but it is expensive and bad for the
environment as it is petroleum based.
10. โข Using any of these alternatives would be better than continuing to ruin nature with turfgrass.
Mondo grass is the best all around alternative and slow growing grasses in general need to
become more mainstream so we can save the environment.
