You are our Champion!
These are the results of our 1st Annual survey of human trafficking awareness / prevention education vendors. Your help
and involvement has given us a look into the type of communities you serve to the tools you use to teach.
It is our hope that sharing this information improves the results of all organizations.
The survey will remain open until the end of 2019, and we will take YOUR feedback to make it better for 2020. Feel free to
send the survey link to anyone you know that is in human trafficking prevention education.

Q4: Additional Responses
● healthcare professionals but we want to eventually reach out to students
● Community-based service (non-profit) providers
● General Community presentations/churches.
● We offer specialized trainings to equip professionals to identify signs of trafficking in their unique settings. Our medical professional training is
certified for continuing education credits for nurses and social workers.
● general community members
● We are not a designated prevention program, but do presentations when asked
● Mostly give Human Trafficking presentations at religion based, community events, law enforcement agencies, and businesses such as hotel,
motel, and apartment managers.
● Churches, so can be all of the above options.
● Community at large
● Could technically be all of the above.
● We have been giving presentations on human trafficking for 6+ years and at one time or another have interacted with all of the above
checked groups.
● Really, the entire community
● Anyone who is willing to hear the message!

Additional topics shared::
● complex trauma, effects of trauma, promising practices
● The influence of trauma as it relates to sexual exploitation
● History, Community Mapping
● recruitment methods
● types of traffickers and trafficking
● empowerment projects
● Human Trafficking 101
● Social Media - training for parents & teens
● labor and sex trafficking and the differences between
smuggling and trafficking
We also received a comment asking us to reconsider the
language used and are seeking community input to address this
feedback. “I find the phrasing of most of these to be highly
inappropriate options to select which are based in shame,
fear, sensationalism, and not survivor centered. Though we
have some of the most expansive curriculum nation wide, I felt
I could not click on most options due to their phrasing.”

Q7: Additional Responses
● n/a
● we offer various types of training so this answer is dependent on which training we're talking about.
● For students, our presentations are typically given in an assembly. Schools will individually decide which students they would like to attend
and how they prefer the audience to be divided based on grade and gender. our professional trainings and community awareness
presentations are usually on-site with an Unbound staff member/volunteer as the presenter. Our CNE certified medical professional training
does have an online equivalent.
● Also, teach a block of instruction during our police department's mandatory in-service training at the HPD Academy which entails defining
Human Trafficking, the difference between Human Trafficking vs. Smuggling, Human Trafficking indicators, scene management, how to
report it, and document it on scenes
● Part of juvenile detention programing and for other youth involved in the juvenile justice system.
● Community Awareness events, BOD training
● It's not a program as much as a presentation. We did develop a chart for schools/organizations to cherry pick what would best fit their
needs after we leave to use for on-going ht education.
12
© 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
Q8: How do you work with other training organizations?
Additional responses:
● We train people to be facilitators to youth. We do not have a Train the Trainer program.
● Again, in 6 years, it's been a growing and evolving strategy

Q9: What is the most effective way to engage students?
© 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
Q9: Additional Responses
● Experiential learning and role plays
● Probably a mix of live action role playing/engaging activities and a digital interactive experience
● It depends on the group and their needs.
● In alignment with the fundamental ideas behind TBRI, we sincerely believe and have seen that all change occurs within the context of a trust-based
relationship. We have received a lot of positive feedback from our programs that incorporate small groups. However, in my experience, effectively
engaging students relies more on the message being heard than the method of its delivery. Unbound will do whatever it takes to get in front of
students and often that means taking whatever time and space a school allows. I have seen students equally responsive and engaged in both small
group settings, where they have the focused attention of a leader, as well as in large group assemblies with several hundred youth. Naturally, there
are elements and methods that are more engaging than others but after delivering scores of presentations to thousands of youth, I can say that I
consistently see students respond to a call up, to feeling empowered to affect change and to identifying ways their actions and decisions can have a
positive impact on those around them. We can always improve and grow in our means of educationally communicating with students to prevent
trafficking, but I believe a message of empowerment, rather than fear, is one that will remain effective, no matter in what manner that message is
delivered. For the record, the VR method is one of the coolest I've heard of yet!
● Interactive activities
● PPT/Key note presentations to large/small groups, role playing, survivor guest speakers, law enforcement perspective of recovered victims and
scene experiences. Also, passing out HT awareness paperwork by non-government organizations.
● It's hard to limit to just one of these. Students need information presented through diverse activities, presentations, and multi-media to get their
attention and allow them to interact hands-on. Small groups are better, assemblies or large groups are less effective.
● Honestly not sure, I would think a mix of all of the above
● This really depends on the student. Mentors are a huge success. They build long-term healthy relationships of trust that allow the child to recognize
his value and worth and a desire to want to listen to what the mentor is bringing to the table.
● When we are able to have a survivor speak to the group, it makes it very real and not just something they read about in books or see on tv.
● Having a good presenter

16
Additional responses:
● Teacher surveys and climate surveys
● Submit pre and post surveys to Love 146
● Requests to present HT presentations at
various locations and events around
Houston
● Also use a teacher feedback survey in
addition to student pre/post tests
● communication with the organization and
feedback from participants
● Calls to our tip line
● Not sure how we do this
Q10: How do you measure the effectiveness or outcomes of your
program?
© 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
17
Q11: How many of your staff are required to run a training?
© 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
18
Q12: Are you a vendor of educational products or services?
© 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
19
Q13: If you provide training in public/private schools, for whom are
you currently a vendor?
Additional responses:
● n/a
● Private schools under Archdiocese
● Alternative access spaces, drop in
spaces, diversion programs, foster care
● Because we serve such a wide
geographical area, our relationships with
the various districts and individual
schools differ greatly. As we offer all of
our trainings for free, this allows for a
variety of ways we may find ourselves in
front of students.
● they don't pay us
● After-school programs that are
connected with the schools
● We provide training for all groups that
request it as well as targeted groups we
design training for, ex: Hospitality, law
enforcement, healthcare, etc.
© 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
Additional responses:
● unsure, we provide many of these things
● This varies for each "customer" we have. We've got "customers" all over the country and the process looks different for each. We also don't
know what minor/major government paperwork means so we're unclear if this applies to us.
● Sometimes we must present to leadership or a committee to be approved to provide the training we offer
● It's really just been a matter of sharing our presentation with administration prior to training it
20
Q14: If you must be an “approved vendor” for your customer, what
is required?
© 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
Q15: Describe the decider that purchases and/or approves your
program.
Additional responses:
● Archbishop and department in charge of new
materials for child protection
● State Department Program Directors, Executive
Directors of Non-Profits,
● it depends on the space
● This varies by school and district. (3 similar
responses)
● Teacher, school club sponsor
● Often we are contacted by the organization or
group to provide this so approval has been
sought before contacting us. As for schools, we
are usually the one contacting them to "get in
there".
21
© 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
Q16: Describe any pushback from potential customers / deciders?
22
© 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
Q16: Additional Responses
● n/a
● Push back on our emphasis on fidelity in teaching material, untrained teachers using our curriculum, etc.
● Evidence-Based vs. Evidence-Informed
● concern regarding mandatory reporting requirements or advocate privilege
● People often push for shame and fear based curriculum which we know is not effective and increases harm
● We have seen tremendous progress in schools' receptivity to our presentations and programs. Most schools are more than willing to
educate and equip their students to stay safe and watch out for their friends. Barriers we have encountered have resulted from a lack of
time and space within a schools preset schedule, as well as a desire to ensure that proper channels of communication are open among
staff to facilitate the identification and self-reporting of potential trafficking victims among their student body. These barriers are not
rejections, merely delays in reaching their students.
● The topic is a tricky one and usually just 'gone around' by doing social media training, etc. Not really sex trafficking.
● We've been asked by one school not to use the "sex-trafficking" term and instead use human trafficking. I think this illustrates the phobia
about letting us in the school. Ironically, some of the religiously affiliated schools have sought us out at a higher frequency.
23
© 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
Additional responses:
● 0 for healthcare professionals.
program is delivered by volunteers
● We have a separate rate for
training teachers to use curriculum
and for us to present our
curriculum to youth.
● Depends on the type/size of
training
● For curriculum, the middle school
program is $200-$350, the high
school program is $300-$450
● We do suggest a donation to our
group be given but that
sometimes is a "coffee mug". If we
charged, we for sure wouldn't be
getting in to the schools.
24
Q17: How do you charge for a training / how much?

  • 2. @reefcares reefcares.org You are our Champion! These are the results of our 1st Annual survey of human trafficking awareness / prevention education vendors. Your help and involvement has given us a look into the type of communities you serve to the tools you use to teach. It is our hope that sharing this information improves the results of all organizations. The survey will remain open until the end of 2019, and we will take YOUR feedback to make it better for 2020. Feel free to send the survey link to anyone you know that is in human trafficking prevention education. reefcares.org/survey Thank you so much for being a champion for the movement. • 5. Q2: What type of organization do you represent? Additional responses: ● Public School ● Catholic Institution ● ministry and public school 5 © 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
  • 6. Additional locations: ● National (US) ● National (US) and International ● Galveston and Brazoria County ISDs ● Brenham, College Station ● Statewide (Texas) ● Statewide (Oregon) ● Multnomah and Washington County (Portland and outer Metro Area) ● Lake Charles, LA ● York, PA ● Virginia ● SW MIchigan Q3: What location/region do you serve? 6 © 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
  • 7. Q4: Who are your learners? 7 © 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
  • 8. Q4: Additional Responses ● healthcare professionals but we want to eventually reach out to students ● Community-based service (non-profit) providers ● General Community presentations/churches. ● We offer specialized trainings to equip professionals to identify signs of trafficking in their unique settings. Our medical professional training is certified for continuing education credits for nurses and social workers. ● general community members ● We are not a designated prevention program, but do presentations when asked ● Mostly give Human Trafficking presentations at religion based, community events, law enforcement agencies, and businesses such as hotel, motel, and apartment managers. ● Churches, so can be all of the above options. ● Community at large ● Could technically be all of the above. ● We have been giving presentations on human trafficking for 6+ years and at one time or another have interacted with all of the above checked groups. ● Really, the entire community ● Anyone who is willing to hear the message! 8 © 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
  • 9. Additional topics shared:: ● complex trauma, effects of trauma, promising practices ● The influence of trauma as it relates to sexual exploitation ● History, Community Mapping ● recruitment methods ● types of traffickers and trafficking ● empowerment projects ● Human Trafficking 101 ● Social Media - training for parents & teens ● labor and sex trafficking and the differences between smuggling and trafficking We also received a comment asking us to reconsider the language used and are seeking community input to address this feedback. “I find the phrasing of most of these to be highly inappropriate options to select which are based in shame, fear, sensationalism, and not survivor centered. Though we have some of the most expansive curriculum nation wide, I felt I could not click on most options due to their phrasing.” Please send suggestions to info@reefcares.org Q5: What topics does your education program cover? 9 © 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
  • 10. Q6: How is your program delivered to learners? 10 © 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
  • 11. Q7: What tools do you use while training? How is your program delivered? 11 © 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
  • 12. Q7: Additional Responses ● n/a ● we offer various types of training so this answer is dependent on which training we're talking about. ● For students, our presentations are typically given in an assembly. Schools will individually decide which students they would like to attend and how they prefer the audience to be divided based on grade and gender. our professional trainings and community awareness presentations are usually on-site with an Unbound staff member/volunteer as the presenter. Our CNE certified medical professional training does have an online equivalent. ● Also, teach a block of instruction during our police department's mandatory in-service training at the HPD Academy which entails defining Human Trafficking, the difference between Human Trafficking vs. Smuggling, Human Trafficking indicators, scene management, how to report it, and document it on scenes ● Part of juvenile detention programing and for other youth involved in the juvenile justice system. ● Community Awareness events, BOD training ● It's not a program as much as a presentation. We did develop a chart for schools/organizations to cherry pick what would best fit their needs after we leave to use for on-going ht education. 12 © 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
  • 13. Q8: How do you work with other training organizations? Additional responses: ● We train people to be facilitators to youth. We do not have a Train the Trainer program. ● Again, in 6 years, it's been a growing and evolving strategy 13 © 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
  • 14. 12.12% (4) 14 Q9: What is the most effective way to engage students? © 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
  • 15. Q9: Additional Responses ● Experiential learning and role plays ● Probably a mix of live action role playing/engaging activities and a digital interactive experience ● It depends on the group and their needs. ● In alignment with the fundamental ideas behind TBRI, we sincerely believe and have seen that all change occurs within the context of a trust-based relationship. We have received a lot of positive feedback from our programs that incorporate small groups. However, in my experience, effectively engaging students relies more on the message being heard than the method of its delivery. Unbound will do whatever it takes to get in front of students and often that means taking whatever time and space a school allows. I have seen students equally responsive and engaged in both small group settings, where they have the focused attention of a leader, as well as in large group assemblies with several hundred youth. Naturally, there are elements and methods that are more engaging than others but after delivering scores of presentations to thousands of youth, I can say that I consistently see students respond to a call up, to feeling empowered to affect change and to identifying ways their actions and decisions can have a positive impact on those around them. We can always improve and grow in our means of educationally communicating with students to prevent trafficking, but I believe a message of empowerment, rather than fear, is one that will remain effective, no matter in what manner that message is delivered. For the record, the VR method is one of the coolest I've heard of yet! ● Interactive activities ● PPT/Key note presentations to large/small groups, role playing, survivor guest speakers, law enforcement perspective of recovered victims and scene experiences. Also, passing out HT awareness paperwork by non-government organizations. ● It's hard to limit to just one of these. Students need information presented through diverse activities, presentations, and multi-media to get their attention and allow them to interact hands-on. Small groups are better, assemblies or large groups are less effective. ● Honestly not sure, I would think a mix of all of the above ● This really depends on the student. Mentors are a huge success. They build long-term healthy relationships of trust that allow the child to recognize his value and worth and a desire to want to listen to what the mentor is bringing to the table. ● When we are able to have a survivor speak to the group, it makes it very real and not just something they read about in books or see on tv. ● Having a good presenter 15 © 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
  • 16. 16 Additional responses: ● Teacher surveys and climate surveys ● Submit pre and post surveys to Love 146 ● Requests to present HT presentations at various locations and events around Houston ● Also use a teacher feedback survey in addition to student pre/post tests ● communication with the organization and feedback from participants ● Calls to our tip line ● Not sure how we do this Q10: How do you measure the effectiveness or outcomes of your program? © 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
  • 17. 17 Q11: How many of your staff are required to run a training? © 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
  • 18. 18 Q12: Are you a vendor of educational products or services? © 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
  • 19. 19 Q13: If you provide training in public/private schools, for whom are you currently a vendor? Additional responses: ● n/a ● Private schools under Archdiocese ● Alternative access spaces, drop in spaces, diversion programs, foster care ● Because we serve such a wide geographical area, our relationships with the various districts and individual schools differ greatly. As we offer all of our trainings for free, this allows for a variety of ways we may find ourselves in front of students. ● they don't pay us ● After-school programs that are connected with the schools ● We provide training for all groups that request it as well as targeted groups we design training for, ex: Hospitality, law enforcement, healthcare, etc. © 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
  • 20. Additional responses: ● unsure, we provide many of these things ● This varies for each "customer" we have. We've got "customers" all over the country and the process looks different for each. We also don't know what minor/major government paperwork means so we're unclear if this applies to us. ● Sometimes we must present to leadership or a committee to be approved to provide the training we offer ● It's really just been a matter of sharing our presentation with administration prior to training it 20 Q14: If you must be an “approved vendor” for your customer, what is required? © 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
  • 21. Q15: Describe the decider that purchases and/or approves your program. Additional responses: ● Archbishop and department in charge of new materials for child protection ● State Department Program Directors, Executive Directors of Non-Profits, ● it depends on the space ● This varies by school and district. (3 similar responses) ● Teacher, school club sponsor ● Often we are contacted by the organization or group to provide this so approval has been sought before contacting us. As for schools, we are usually the one contacting them to "get in there". 21 © 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
  • 22. Q16: Describe any pushback from potential customers / deciders? 22 © 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
  • 23. Q16: Additional Responses ● n/a ● Push back on our emphasis on fidelity in teaching material, untrained teachers using our curriculum, etc. ● Evidence-Based vs. Evidence-Informed ● concern regarding mandatory reporting requirements or advocate privilege ● People often push for shame and fear based curriculum which we know is not effective and increases harm ● We have seen tremendous progress in schools' receptivity to our presentations and programs. Most schools are more than willing to educate and equip their students to stay safe and watch out for their friends. Barriers we have encountered have resulted from a lack of time and space within a schools preset schedule, as well as a desire to ensure that proper channels of communication are open among staff to facilitate the identification and self-reporting of potential trafficking victims among their student body. These barriers are not rejections, merely delays in reaching their students. ● The topic is a tricky one and usually just 'gone around' by doing social media training, etc. Not really sex trafficking. ● We've been asked by one school not to use the "sex-trafficking" term and instead use human trafficking. I think this illustrates the phobia about letting us in the school. Ironically, some of the religiously affiliated schools have sought us out at a higher frequency. 23 © 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
  • 24. Additional responses: ● 0 for healthcare professionals. program is delivered by volunteers ● We have a separate rate for training teachers to use curriculum and for us to present our curriculum to youth. ● Depends on the type/size of training ● For curriculum, the middle school program is $200-$350, the high school program is $300-$450 ● We do suggest a donation to our group be given but that sometimes is a "coffee mug". If we charged, we for sure wouldn't be getting in to the schools. 24 Q17: How do you charge for a training / how much? © 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation
  • 25. Thank you for your participation. We will continue to collect results throughout 2019. Please share the survey link with your colleagues. reefcares.org/survey 25 @reefcares reefcares.org © 2019 Radical Empathy Education Foundation. Feel free to share and please credit @reefcares.
