Title: A Comparative Study on Kinetics and Mechanism of Oxidation of Ethylparabin by
Potassium permanganate in aqueous perchloric acid medium.
Abstract:
Kinetics of oxidation of ethyl paraben by potassium permanganate KMnO4 in Perchloric acid
medium as been investigated.Analysis of kinetic data revealed that the reaction exhibits rate
flow, rate=K[KMnO4][Ethyl paraben][H+
].The stoichiometry of the reaction has been established
as KMnO4 : ehylparaben=2:2 and final products are identified as 4 Hydoxybenzoic acid ,Acetic
acid and Mn(II).A mechanistic pathway consistent with the kinetic studies involving formation
of powerful oxidant HMnO4 followed by slow hydride transfer from the ester to the oxidant as
been proposed on the basis of experimental results. The reaction were carried out at different
temperatures allowing the determination of activation parameters with respect to slow step by
Arrhenius equation and thermodynamic quantities with respect to equilibrium steps by Van’t
hoff plot of the proposed mechanism.
