2. Background information
Social Entrepreneur we are presenting: Chris “Kreece” Fuchs
He founded Better World Books in 2002 (along with Xavier Helgesen and Jeff Kurtzman)
It works by reusing or recycling books through sales on their website and donations to
schools, using 84 million volumes to raise $12.1 million for literacy funding.
Its mission: To maximize the value of every book out there and to help promote literacy
around the world.
3. Aspiration and Goals and
how they achieve it
They created a book drive as people of their age did not have enough resources in order to finish
their course on engineering as it was really difficult and the books that are being sold are normally
very expensive. In order to help such people, Christopher started a book drive to help collect
unwanted books and saved the environment. This business then raised millions of dollars for
literacy, saved books from landfills to millions of readers worldwide and created jobs for hundreds
of people.
4. Contribution to society
They reuse and recycle through sales on their website and donations to schoo to raise
fund for literacy funding,so as to promote literacy, the fundings gained thus helped in
promoting a better education system and environments towards those in needs, creating a
conductive environment for those that has less opportunities to learn, thus increasing the
level of knowledge in the society, a contribution by that mean.
5. Challenges they faced and
how they overcome it
Christopher faced with finantial diffculties as to build the business. They have to convince
and tell their classmate, Jeff, to help with their business after having a success in doing the
business in the local community centre as it contains fast internet connection, a great
cause and a back room that could hold some books. Jay, the centre’s director was
convinced by Xavier to take a gamble on his idea and managed to raise $10,000 in
revenue. This implies that in order for someone to succeed, one must think critically and
takes risks in order to overcome the challenge.
6. Reflection
We learned from Chris “Kreece” Fuchs that persevering and having a spare thought is
important for the world to be conducive for every individual. Having empathy and acting to
help on it, even a seemingly small action such as donating books to needy people that
cannot afford one, may have a huge effect om the recepients. Not only them benefitting but
we also felt thankful for the ability to have books and learning from it and having to donate
some old books to those in needs may bring a huge postive impact to the society, boosting
not only equality and also literacy
7. Conclusion
Being in a society, firstly we must know that
we have to work together as one to achieve
success. We have to think about other people
and try our best to help them instead of being
selfish and only care about ourselves. We
should learn about Chris “Kreece” Fuchs and
learn from him, try to help out as much as
possible and reaching out to as many people
as possible to progress as one.
