2. Is mobility program insight proving a challenge?
Do you know how many international
assignees you have and how much
your program costs? Are you asked for
detailed management information and
data analytics relating to your global
mobility program?
Sending employees on assignment typically costs
in excess of three times the local salary, which
is a significant investment for any organization.
While there is consensus that moving talent to
the right locations will develop individuals and
contribute to business growth, mobility teams
are under increasing pressure to make informed
decisions to ensure tangible return on investment
both from a cost and business value perspective.
With accurate management reporting, businesses
can improve workforce planning, better manage
costs and contribute analysis to support the
talent agenda.
Cost transparency can help target areas of
possible savings such as shipping, insurance or
housing. Demographics can provide valuable
data on talent in the workforce, based upon
skills, ages, gender and nationality. This aids
identification and speed of deployment and helps
drive current and future workforce planning.
Getting informed
When mobility teams can effectively capture assignment data, they are able to provide valuable insight
into the wider mobility strategy and contribute to business growth and talent objectives. This can
significantly elevate the global mobility team profile.
Accelerate the journey to mobility program insight
Planning: consider and capture the data needed for longer term mobility planning, e.g., top five
program costs, key “geographic corridors” and assignee ages and nationalities; the assignment
policy is a good starting point
Desktop review: review readily available information in your team, and map other functions or your
vendor network, which may hold useful data
Technology: confirm the HR data systems used within your organization globally; assess the
protocols for recording assignee data consistently
Vendors: demand collated, detailed analysis and management reporting from your vendors; review
the emphasis of KPIs
Resources: assess resource capacity to validate and analyze the data, once gathered, in line with
your specific area of focus
78% of global mobility teams do not measure the return on investment (ROI) of
sending an employee on assignment.

3. Quantifying the issue
By considering a set of key questions, you can
begin to assess your current level of focus on
mobility program insight and determine the value
of addressing any gaps:
►► Does your organization acknowledge the
value of management information?
►► Do you know how many assignees you have
globally and where they are located?
►► Do you know how much your mobility
program costs?
►► Do you have an awareness of what strategic
purposes assignee data can be used for?
►► Is your organization centralized or
decentralized in its structure? Can you take
a global approach to gathering data and
management information?
►► Do you use technology to gather live data
and produce regular cost reports and other
management data reports?
►► Do you have resources to apply insight to
available reporting?
Developing program insight: EY experience
Global pharmaceutical company
Our client was looking for insight into
the immigration formalities of a number
of countries to arm them with sufficient
information to plan forthcoming
assignments.
They wanted to know how easy or difficult
it is to enter the country and how long the
process is likely to take, with specific areas
of focus including government timing,
stability of process, same-sex couples and
quota requirements.
EY collated a red, amber and green pack
with a page for each country detailing
the steps and the time required to
complete the process from receipt of all
required documents, outlining detailed
information on the specific areas the client
had requested.
As a result, the client has been able to see,
almost at a glance, which countries are
easier or more difficult to enter and work in.
This has assisted in making the assignments
process more efficient and the expectations
on start dates more accurate.
Global automotive company
Our client was unable to decipher the
multiple sources of compensation, benefit
and cost information for their global
assignee population and wanted to use
this information to gain a more complete
overview of their mobility program. Using
the EY Total Cost Report, which provides
a full and detailed mobility program cost
overview and combining this with EY’s
insight across the multiple global mobility
functions, the client was able to analyze
areas for improvement.
With further EY support, the client
introduced significant cost reductions from
the perspective of policy, compensation
structure and social security planning.
