This document summarizes the results of a survey conducted by Bebe Jewell regarding art students' access to performance and studio spaces at their university. The survey found that most students are unable to book performance rooms at their preferred times and that the lack of space negatively impacts their rehearsals and end-of-year performances. An overwhelming majority felt that additional performance rooms and studios would be "extremely important" and help improve their experience. A trial of 24-hour access to one performance space was well-received, though underused due to lack of awareness. The author calls for improvements to existing spaces and future expansion to better support the arts students.
3. What were my aims:
• To find out if other students were facing the same difficulty's as
myself.
• Find out how the arts student has changed since last year
• To gain 24 hour access to PAS
• What the students and the staff felt were needed and if this affected
their time at this university.
5. Why is it important?
• PAS provides room to many of the biggest and largest SU sports and
societies. With 300-400 students turned away each year due to lack of
space
• The university rents out the space to external companies and individuals,
which brings money to the university.
• Because unlike many courses on the university, students do EISP (External
Independent Study Projects) which is in form of a performance. This is
their dissertation.
• Because the Theatre Royal has increased their cost by 100% in the
last year, leading to us paying over £20k each just for end of year
shows. This does not include our other shows throughout the year!!

13. In a recent survey
Out of 117 students 14/15 and 105 students 15/16
• I've had to resort to rehearsing in corridors at times!
• One of the main reasons I will not recommend the university to students is how unimportant this issue
has been to the university as a whole.
• It's extremely painful to practice dance on carpet after folding away forty chairs and six tables.
• I worry that it is just getting worst, I am proud of being a Winchester student but am not proud of the
facilities
• As a drama student I find that these rooms are key to getting our grades and achieving our full
potential.

• We have only been able to get 2 rehearsals in 2 weeks due to lack of rooms
• I worry for new courses, we have the staff and the ideas but do not have what we need, our
learning and university experience will never reach full potential
• Late night rehearsals are so valuable
• The 24 hour opening is needed
• Winchester is full of extremely talented artist and progression is stunted

15. 24 hour PAS
Due to last years survey results I was able to secure PAS becoming 24
hours Monday – Thursday on a trial period.
But only 68.57% of students surveyed knew of the 24 hour trial period,
Yet 89.52% of students would have made use 24 hour PAS if they were
aware of the changes.
Which is super important as the average amount of hours a week a
student spends rehearsing has increased to vast majority rehearsing 10-
20 hours a week. With some students doing 20-40hours a week.
16. 24 hour PAS
Was it used?
68.57% of students who knew of PAS 24 hour trial period. We had 94
room bookings made over 44 days.
It made a huge difference to my group and my courses, as many of us
were in PAS until 2am for rehearsals. It didn’t make any more work for
room bookings, security or cleaning, and there was not one complaint
about noise from residents linked to PAS
17. Plans for next year:
• PAS shall remain 24 hours Monday - Thursday open to students
• In talks with Joy and Neil about the future of the arts department and it’s
future. Nothing is set in stone but talked about some VERY BIG
CHANGES which could lead to us not relying on the Theatre Royal
Winchester. Having facilities to open up certain courses while
improving the current situation with either new buildings, extensions,
connecting.
18. Plans for next year:
But still no talks about improving current PAS sitution and it needing a bit
of TLC
• Heating not working
• Air conditioning not working,
• Speakers and computers not working
• Mirrors to be added to the rooms
• Black out blinds fitted into each room
