Bullying
Group Focus
The group will be comprisedof elementary grade level students.The groupwill focuson helping
studentsidentifyhowbullyingaffectssomeone’sself-image andwillteachthem the strategiestohelp
identifythe behaviorsthatconstitute“bullying”sothattheyare betterpreparedtohelp prevent
bullyingintheirschool.
MissionStatement
The missionof the groupis to provide asafe environmentwhere studentswill be partof a support
groupwhere theywill learnnewstrategiesdesignedtostrengthentheirskillstohelppreventbullying.
All instructionandactivities are gearedtowards elementary grade level understanding. Videosand
activitieshave beenobtainedfromthe followingresources: National BullyingPreventionCenter, Stop
Bullying.gov, Kidshealth.org.,AmericanPsychological Association,The BullyProject,ElementarySchool

After the video, students will get a popsiclestick thatwill belabeled with an action/behavior.Students will explain
to the group whether the action/behavior is considered “bullying”.

Facilitator will ask students questions regardingthe actions written on the popsiclesticksto evaluatehow the
student knows what type of “bullying”it is considered.

getting bullied.Facilitator will revieweach strategy and will model the action that goes alongwith the strategy.

Video explains thatalthough teasingdoes not physically harmanother student, it does harmthe student
emotionally and affects their self-image. Students will then have the opportunity to choose a strategy from the
“Stop a Bully”poster and act itout. All students will havean opportunity to practicethe strategies.
Closure/Evaluation
Facilitator will randomly pick students to choose a strategy and actit out to evaluate their understandingof the
strategy.

Facilitator will createa scenario where a student is excluded and will ask studenthow he/she felt when he was
excluded.

Week 2: Help Build a Positive Self-image
Day 1
Group Objective
Students will learn howdifficultitis for a new student attending a new school.They will learn the skillsto reach
out to a new student.
Establish the Need
Facilitator will explain howthere may be times when we may be bullyingsomeone but are unaware of it.
Facilitator gives the example of when a new student is enrolled in their classroomand how easy it is to exclude
that student because he is new.
Identify the Skill Component
1. Preventing exclusion of a new student by saying“hi”
Model the Skill
Facilitator reminded students that at the beginning of the school year,student did not know facilitator butthat
facilitator greeted student and how nice itmakes a student feel when he/she is greeted to.
Independent Practice

teaches students that when they see a new student, to have empathy and make a step towards being friendly with
the student. Students will then engage in an activity thatwill reinforcehow to avoid beinga bully towards a new
student through exclusion.Students in K/1st/2nd gradewill drawto the title “I Know How To … Say Hi”. Students in
3rd/4th grade will writeand draw to the title “I Know How To… Say Hi”.
Closure/Evaluation
Students will sharetheir activity with the group to reinforce what they have learned about how they can avoid
excludinga new student.

students are different and have different interests,we need to respect them.

Model the Skill
Facilitator will reviewthe positivestatements with the students and will ask them how they feel when they are
told these statements. Facilitator will explain thatother students want to feel positiveas well,therefore it is
important to respect their interests and differences.

Video teaches students that others have different interests and dreams and that itis okay.It teaches them to
respect others whether they liketheir interests or not. Students in K/1st/2nd gradewill gluethe positivestatement
strips on a construction paper and will drawan image that correlates with the statement. Students in 3rd/4th grade
will drawa speaker on construction paper and will add the positivestatement strips as an exampleof the
statements that they will begin speaking.
Closure/Evaluation
Students will sharetheir finished activity with the group and will explain why they chosethe specific positive
statements and how they will startusingthem.

of helpingother students feel good about themselves and how doing the oppositeis considered “bullying”

Video is about teachingstudents how positivecomments can help build a positiveself-image.Students will engage
in making a group Poster. Students in k/1st/2nd grade will drawimages that correlatewith positivecomments
written on the poster with the title “Nice Things I can Say To Another”. Students in 3rd/4th gradewill make a group
“Key” Poster titled “Nice things I can say to another student”. Students will cutout keys and will label them with
positivestatements. They will gluethe keys on a poster board and will drawimages that correlatewith the
statements on the keys. The keys show that the positivecomments are “keys” to help stop “bullying”.
Closure/Evaluation
Students will sharetheir poster with the facilitator and will sharehow the comments are “keys” to help stop
“bullying”in their school.

Students will learn howto talk with their friends to make them understand why they need to stop bullyingothers.

Facilitator will discusshowthere may be times when we may have friends who are bullies towards others and how
we may need to take the steps to bringour concerns to those friends.
Identify the Skill Component
1. Speaking with friends aboutnot bullying
Model the Skill
Facilitator will model how they can approach a friend and ask them politely to stop bullying.Facilitator will model
different ways to speak with a friend about not bullying.
Independent Practice
Students will watch webisode 4: “Melanie’s Friends”http://www.stopbullying.gov/kids/webisodes/index.html
Video teaches students how to speak with their friends who are bullies,aboutstoppingthe behavior.It gives
students communication skillsto help them speak with their friends without upsetting them. Students in k/1st/2nd
grade will then engage in a drawing activity titled “If My Friends Were Being Mean To Other Students I Would…”
Students in 3rd/4th grade will drawand write an activity titled “If My Friends Were Being Mean To Other Students I
Would…”.
Closure/Evaluation
Students will sharetheir finished activity with the rest of the group. They will sharethe approach they will useif
they have a friend who is bullyingto help them understand the importance of not bullying.

Week 3 Being The Victim
Day 1:
Group Objective
Students learn one important strategy to help stop the bullying:tellingtheir parents when they arebullied.
Establish the Need
Facilitator will discussthatone importantstrategy to use when being bullied is to tell their parents so that they can
take action if no response is given to the situation.
Identify the Skill Component
1. Strategy: speaking with their parent
Model the Skill
Facilitator will model how they can speak with their parent about what is happeningin school if they are bullied.
Explain thatit is not okay to make up lies but that it is importantto tell parents if it is true that they are being
bullied.
Independent Practice
Students will watch webisode 5: “KB’s Day” http://www.stopbullying.gov/kids/webisodes/index.html
There will be a group discussion aboutthe importanceof tellingtheir parents when they arebeing bullied.
Students will engage in an activity:MarshmallowSnowman. Students will makea snowman out of marshmallows.
Duringactivity,facilitator will monitor and assistin the completion of the snowman. This activity will reinforcethe
concept that they are unableto take careof things on their own and therefore need to always seek their parents
for help.
Closure/Evaluation
Students will sharehowthey needed help in completing their snowman and how in the same way they need help
from their parents when being bullied.

Group Objective
Students will learn thatthe experience of being bullied can help another student. Students will learn to sharehow
they stood up to the bullying.
Establish the Need
Facilitator will explain howitis importantto make a buddy and be a buddy to help put a stop to bull ying.Discuss
how a friend who has experienced bullyingand overcame it, may be a support to another student and who can
help put a stop to bullying.
Identify the Skill Component
1. Friendships beingimportantin putting a stop to bullying
Model the Skill
Facilitator will model how they obtain support and help from the facilitator becausestudents havebecome
buddies with facilitator.Explain howitis better to be a buddy than be aloneand how this can make a difference in
putting a stop to bullying.
Independent Practice

video shows students how one student who has been bullied in the pastbut learned to stand up to the bullying
can help another students who is beingbullied.This teaches the students to shareand educate other students on
how to stand up to bullying.Students will engage in an activity where they will work with a partner. Students will
make a Pine cone craftthat will reinforcebeinga good partner.

Group Objective
Students learn that if they are the bullies,there is hope to change their behavior through three strategies.
Establish the Need
Facilitator will explain thatitmay be difficultfor the bully to make changes but that itis possible through using
three strategies.
Identify the Skill Component
1. Strategies to help a bully make changes:Make a commitment to change, focus on empathy and
responsibility,and replacebullyingbehavior with positivebehaviors.
Model the Skill
Facilitator will model the three strategies that can help a bully make changes.
Independent Practice

video teaches students that bullies arecapableof changingif they focus on three strategies:1. Make a

Students will learn why it is importantto become friends with students who are victims of bullying.

Facilitator will talk abouthow to look out for students who may be bullied and the importance of becoming friends
with them. Explain thatthe student feels aloneand wants a friend.
Identify the Skill Component
1. Identifyingstudents who arebullied and becoming friends with them
Model the Skill
Facilitator will showstudents images of victims vs.bullies and will explain howto identify them by lookingattheir
face and body language.
Independent Practice

Group Objective
Students will learn thatthere is power in numbers and therefore need to become friends with students who are
bullied to help them stop the bullying.
Establish the Need
Facilitator will talk abouthow there is power in numbers, meaning that when students have friends,they areless
likely to be bullied.
Identify the Skill Component
1. Make friends so that bullies can stay away fromyou
Model the Skill
Facilitator will review“Stop a Bully”poster and will explain thatitwill be used as a game. Facilitator will review
rules and will model how to toss and actout the strategy.
Independent Practice
Students will watch webisode 11: “Power In Numbers” http://www.stopbullying.gov/kids/webisodes/index.html
Video teaches students that there is power in numbers. It shows them that it is importantto become friends with
students who arebullied and stand up for them. Students will engage in game “How To Stop A Bully”. Students will
toss diceand will roleplay the strategy that dicefalls on.
Closure/Evaluation
Students will showhow well they have learned the strategies through actingout the strategies duringthe game.

Model the Skill
Facilitator will showhow being a good buddy is doingnicethings for your friends.Facilitator will model how
students will make the card for their friend.
Independent Practice

shows students the valueof havingfriends and how to be niceto them to show them that you care about them.
Students will makea personal card for a special friend.This will reinforcethe skillsneeded to show a friend that
they valuehim/her.

Students will sharetheir card with the group and will sharehowthey felt while makingit for their friend.

Week 5: How To Stand Up to Bullying
Day 1
Group Objective
Students will learn strategies thatwill teach them how to help prevent bullyingattheir school.
Establish the Need
Facilitator will reviewstrategies learned to help stop a bully.
Identify the Skill Component
1. Strategies to help stop a bully: Don’t play closeto the bully,Stand tall and brave, Feel good about
yourself,Get a buddy and be a buddy, Tell a teacher, Tell a parent
Model the Skill
Facilitator will showstudents how they will writethe strategies on each circlefor the caterpillar.
Independent Practice

Video teaches students the strategies needed to help prevent bullyingin their school.Students will then engage in
an activity:Bully Bugs. They will cutout circles thatwill forma caterpillar.On each circle,students will writea

Students will then be given a scenario thatthey will roleplay as a group.Each student is given a role. One student

elementary school girl beingbullied.

Students in K/1st/2nd grades will engagein a discussion where they will recall strategies “How To Stand Up For
Myself” and will drawimages reinforcingstrategies.Students in 3rd/4th gradewill engage in a writingactivity:“How
To Stand Up For Myself?”

Facilitator will read the book “The Rabbit& Squirrel”.The book is aboutthe two animals who fightall the time and
they have to figureout how to end the conflict.
Independent Practice
After listeningto the story “The Rabbit& Squirrel”,students will complete an activity Sheet where they will answer
the question “What do you think happened after they ran into the woods?” Students will engage in critical thinking
and will come up with a solution to the conflictthat the rabbitand squirrel arefacing.
Closure/Evaluation
Students will havethe opportunity to sharetheir responseto the question in the activity sheet. This will reinforce
them putting into practicethe strategies they have been learningon how to avoid bullying.

Facilitator will remind students that they have a voice and that there is power in usingitto help stand up to
bullying.
Identify the Skill Component
1. The use of your voiceis a tool that can help you stand up againstbullying.
Model the Skill
Facilitator will createscenario where a student asks facilitator to be mean to another student. Facilitator will
model the responses that can be given to the student being the instigator.
Independent Practice
Students in K/1st/2nd gradewill engage in a drawingactivity titled “If Someone Asked Me To Be Mean To Another
Person I Would….” Students in 3rd/4th grade will engage in a drawingand writingactivity titled “If Someone Asked
Me To Be Mean To Another Person I Would…”
Closure/Evaluation

safemanner to help be a supportfor the student being bullied.
Identify the Skill Component
1. Standingup for a student who is being bullied:become a friend with the victim, look for an adult,report it
to the office, ask the victimto join you and remove him/her from the situation,creatingnoiseto get
others’ attention and help.
Model the Skill
Facilitator will sharethe scenario of a student being bullied.Facilitator will model how another student can stand
up for that student being bullied.
Independent Practice
Students will beassigned to groups of 3 or more. Students will usethe puppets to make a puppet show that will
portray a scenario with a students who are playingthe roles of the bully,victim, bystander/student who stands up
for victim.
Closure/Evaluation
Students will discussthescenarios in thepuppet show. They will discusshowthe roles of the bystander and the
person who stands up to bullyingmakea difference.

1. Identifyingthe need to unite with other students to help put a stop to bullying.
Model the Skill
Facilitator will givean example of how it is powerful when students unite. Facilitator will model the skill by asking
students to unite by the arm whilestandingtogether. Facilitator will showhow itis difficultto break the chain
when they are united by the arm, compared to standingalone.
Independent Practice

Video teaches students about the power in unitingtogether to help stop bullying.They will also sign a pledge to
“not bully”.

Identify the Skill Component 1. Standingup for a student who is being bullied:become a friend with the victim, look for an adult,report it to the office, ask the victimto join you and remove him/her from the situation,creatingnoiseto get others’ attention and help. Model the Skill Facilitator will sharethe scenario of a student being bullied.Facilitator will model how another student can stand up for that student being bullied. Independent Practice Students will beassigned to groups of 3 or more. Students will usethe puppets to make a puppet show that will portray a scenario with a students who are playingthe roles of the bully,victim, bystander/student who stands up for victim.
