This document discusses the potential for artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. It begins with commonly used definitions of AI and machine learning. It then provides several examples of how AI is being used in various areas of healthcare, including assisting primary care physicians, virtual assistants, remote patient monitoring, disease screening and diagnosis, and aiding radiologists. The document discusses challenges and opportunities for AI in healthcare systems and considers perspectives on both the promise and risks of AI for improving outcomes and reducing costs. It provides an overview of the current ecosystem and stakeholders involved in developing AI for healthcare.
9. First, the project adopted the commonly used definition of AI as “the use of computers for automated decision-
making to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence.”1 It also defined machine learning as a subset
of AI that uses algorithms that give computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed.
22. The greatest contribution
that artificial
intelligence could make to
humanity might be in health
care. According to the
consultancy firm Frost &
Sullivan, AI has the potential
to improve medical
treatment outcomes by 30-
40 per cent and reduce costs
by as much as 50 per cent.

Addressing burnout
While AI marketplaces should foster widespread adoption of AI in
radiology, they also have the potential to help alleviate radiologist
burnout by augmenting and assisting them in two ways.
The first, through the iterative development process, is by facilitating
the design of algorithms that integrate seamlessly into
radiologists’ workflows and simplify them, rather
than introducing additional, burdensome screens and steps to click
through.
The second is by improving the speed and quality of radiology
reporting. These algorithms can automate repetitive
tasks and act as virtual residents, pre-processing images to highlight
potentially important findings, making measurements and
comparisons, and automatically adding data and clinical intelligence to
the report for the radiologist’s review. Algorithms also can
provide quality checks, for example by detecting errors in
laterality or patient sex and to ensure report accuracy and assist with
billing and coding, all of which can reduce clinicians’ stress
Health in a Glance 2018, het jaarlijkse OESO-rapport over

MediSeen’s PaaS (Platform As A

care they need. They accomplish this through an AI-based symptom-tracking platform
that assesses the users' symptoms online and provides evidence-based advice on the
right level of care the user should seek. Mediktor’s system is clinically-validated to be
91.3% accurate and is the only symptom tracker of its kind available in 11 languages.
