Happy February! The calendar is slowly ticking away at the
Leadership year. Hard to believe there are just a few
sessions left until graduation. This month we’ll be taking a
look at Process Improvement, Innovation, and Economic
Development. We’ll be exploring different areas of the
metro today so be ready to drive! I encourage you to carpool

Where are you without your health? There is nothing more important that your health. It
makes all things possible. As a nonprofit healthcare organization, Essentia Health is focused
on medicine. They are a recognized for their compassionate, patient centered care. We are
grateful to have Essentia Health host the morning session. Kevin Pitzer, Senior Vice
President at Essentia Health will welcome us and tell us a little bit about what they do. We’ll
then hear from Barry Dallum, Process Excellence Director - West Region. Dallum has years of
professional experience with Quality, Operations, Technical, Marketing & Business
Improvement experience in Fortune 500 companies including petrochemicals, oil & gas,
mining, automotive, building & construction, and now healthcare. He has co-formulated and
deployed process & operational excellence strategies, global business strategies and
business start-up strategies. In addition, Dallum has provided coaching and mentoring to
project leaders and has fun several hundred projects. Dallum holds a B.S. in Chemical
Engineering from Arizona State University, as well a Certificate of Management Studies from
Texas A & M University and a Certificate of Project Management from the University of
Wisconsin.

how do we keep it that way? The Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corpora-
tion is committed to making sure we stay on top. They are building Greater Fargo Moorhead

Attracting new businesses and industries.
Initiating, facilitating and supporting traditional and high-tech infrastructure enhance-
ment initiatives.

Fargo Jet Center
We’ll enjoy lunch, a tour, and some group project time (if time allows) out at the Fargo Jet
Center. Hear the crew at the Jet Center talk about what makes them unique to our area.
You’ll find out what they are doing to help spur economic development in our region and
beyond.
NDSU Research and Technology Park
The NDSU Research & Technology Park provides academic researchers and private-sector
partners a place to combine talents to develop new technologies, methods and systems.
Over its first 10 years, the Park has contributed to the quality of education at NDSU, diversi-
fied the economy of the state and built an environment for discovery. New businesses have
been established, developed and are thriving; great career opportunities have been created
for talented, intelligent people; and new families are flourishing in North Dakota. Businesses
in the Park and those that have recently graduated from our Technology Incubator are
worldwide innovation leaders.

Parking Instructions
Essentia Health, 3000 32 Ave S, Fargo
You may park in any of the patient/visitor spots. The parking lot wraps around the building.
(Please don’t assume that the only parking spots are on the north side of the building!) There
are two entrances to the building—one on the north side and one on the south side. Our
meeting room is on the main floor of the building, towards the south side.
Please find 2 or 3 people to carpool with when you leave Essentia. (Unless it doesn’t work
for your schedule later in the day.) Our optional class social at the Fargo Cork’n Cleaver will
bring us back to the Essentia area so you can pick up your car.

You can park in any of the open spots. If all spots are take, you can park along the road. Enter
through Door #2.
NDSU Research and Technology Park, Research 1 & 2, 1735 NDSU
Research Park Dr, Fargo
You may park in the parking lot between the Research 1 and Research 2 buildings. The class
will be divided into two groups during this part of the day. Detailed instructions to be given

Group Project Presentations - Thursday, April 11
It’s hard to believe that in a couple of months, you will be presenting the outcomes
of your nonprofit project. I can’t wait to hear about what you have all been up to! I
will be inviting your supervisor to attend the presentations. Also, your nonprofit
group should be in attendance as well. Once you sign up for a presentation timeslot
at our March session, please notify your nonprofit group as to what time they should
attend. You may invite them to help with the presentation, if you would like.
Please complete the following points and email your responses to me no later than
Monday, April 1.
Project Vision - What vision did you develop for the project?
Project Goals - What goals did you develop?
Project Outcome - What were your outcomes?
AV/Supply Needs
Each group will be given 30 minutes for their presentation. In addition to the above
bullet points, you should also consider including the following topics:
How your project began
Group interaction - Describe your group dynamic, roles, meeting schedules,
etc.
Struggles and successes
Lessons you learned through the project experience
You will sign up for timeslots at the March session.
