1. Current Industry trends and the job
market, a start-up perspective
Balendran | CTO, Bluedot Innovation
balendran@bluedot.com.au
2. A little bit about myself
After establishing two start-ups with mixed results, I have worked for various
organizations in different capacities. After 8 years, I again decided last year to
quit it all and get back into start-ups. I am the CTO of Bluedot Innovation.
Point of sale and Easy track
Softech - A market place for computer hardware. Connecting buyers and sellers. A
gum tree equivalent for everything computers.
3. Disruptions
Some of the recent disruptive start-ups
Bluedot Innovation’s location services SDK is disrupting multiple industries, including
mobile commerce, advertising and vehicle related payments such as for toll roads
Uber – A taxi app, disrupting the traditional taxi industry. Connecting passengers with
drivers of vehicles for hire and ridesharing service
AirBnb – A web site for accommodation sharing – Disrupting the traditional real
estate and Holiday and recreation industry
4. The problems we’ve solved at
Bluedot
Until now, businesses have typically not used high precision location services
in their applications…
Precise location services traditionally consume very high levels of battery life on
mobile devices
Location-based payments require costly new hardware or infrastructure to complete
transactions
Businesses and their customers are concerned about the risk to privacy and personal
information
5. The solution
A new generation of location-aware applications powered by Bluedot technology
Products and services delivered to the customer’s precise location
Applications running continuously in the background with minimal battery drain
The precision needed for location-based payments
No need for additional hardware making it globally scalable at very low cost
Privacy-friendly business and technology by design
6. Our product
The Bluedot Point SDK
The software development kit (or SDK) is a package
of our proprietary software that can be licensed by
clients and integrated into their new or existing
applications.
Their applications would then be able to leverage
Bluedot’s powerful location services capability to
add value to their business.
Available on Android and iOS
Designed for enterprise level use
Globally scalable at very low cost
We enable other businesses to build applications that couldn’t exist until now
7. Interesting areas still not exploited
There is a lot of movement in these areas with a lot of potential
3D Printing
Bit Coins
Wearables and Internet of Things
8. What is the future for you?
Don’t worry too much about off shoring and job cuts in the IT industry
There is still a greater need for skilled people locally
Painful lessons have been learnt by running projects off shore – It is not for everyone
Take the normal route and work for an established organization or take the start-up
route to achieve success reasonably quicker
9. What do we look for in new hires?
Attitude and agile approach over experience
We look for people with the right attitude and an agile mentality
Familiarity with Open source everything
Think outside the box, be flexible and posses willingness to get out of their comfort
zone
Get it done somehow approach does not cut it
10. Popular Technology Stacks
Open source techs which assist rapid development are popular
Mongo DB, Couch DB, Cassandra, Dynamo DB and many more…
Node.js, Ember.js, Angular JS, Ruby on Rails, PHP and JQuery of course
All flavors of Linux and Cloud
