2. What is a Cell:-
Cell is the basic structural and functional unit of life.
It is the smallest unit of life and is often called the building unit of life.
Cell Components:-
1. Nucleus
2. Cytoplasm
3. Cell membrane
4. Vacuole lysosome
3. Discovery of Cell:-
The cell was discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665
He examined very thin slices of cork and saw a multitude of tiny pores that looked like
walled compartments and named them cell
Cell functions:-
Cell Part Function
Cell membrane Controls what enters and leaves the cell
Nuclear membrane Controls what enters and leaves the nucleus
Nucleus Control centre of the cell
Chromosomes Genetic information in the nucleus
EndoplasmicReticulum Transport system in cell
Ribosome Organelle makes proteins
Golgi Body Organelle packages proteins
Vacuole Stores water and waste
Lysosome Breaks down old cell parts
Mitochondria Organelle for cellular respiration provides
4. Types of Organisms:-
Unicellular
They are formed of one cell
Example:- Amoeba
Multicellular
They are formed of many cells
Example:- Human
5. Difference between plant and animal cell:-
Difference In structure
Difference in function
Feature Plant Cell Animal Cell
Cell wall Cell wall is present Cell wall is absent
Chloroplast Present in large
numbers in the thin
cytoplasm lining
Absent
Number and size of
vacuoles
One large permanent
vacuole
Numerous small
temporary vacuoles
Relative size Large Small
Feature Plant Cell Animal Cell
Shape Regular elongated
cylindrical shape
Irregular shape
Ability to make food Make their own food
(photosynthesis)
Cannot make their
own food
Turgidity (the pressure
that is being exerted
by water inside the
cell )
Can become turgid Cannot become turgid
