• Time is a unique resource because
it cannot be accumulated, switched
on or off or replaced.
• Whatever time we have wasted will
be lost forever; therefore, we must
really treasure our time by :
–planning and managing it

Our time and it’s usage
• Everyone has the same amount of
time, i.e.24 hours a day,168 hours a
week,8760 hours a year to spend.
• At the rate of 60 seconds every
minute, it is vital that we make
efficient use of the time we have
available for study to achieve our

Step One : Analysis
First, find out approximately
how many hours each day you
spend on sleep, classes, sports,
etc.
Let us look at one example
here. This is Jason’s analysis of
how he normally uses his time.

his time more effectively , Jason
has to work towards this goal.
• He should try out his new plan for
a few weeks first.
• If he is satisfied with the plan,
then he can continue with it.

with it, he has to analyze his
use of time again and adjust
his schedule until it suits him.
Activity 3
Prioritizing
activities
• Most of us find that we have a lot of
things to do but have too little time to do
them.
• If you feel this way, decisions must be
made to help you make best use of your
time. Thus, you need to think about
where priorities lie .
• Since time is limited and cannot be
manufactured or expanded, we need to
• Spend a few minutes every night
before you go to sleep to think of
all the tasks that you need to
accomplish the next day.
• You will see that this little
planning time invested will reap
many benefits for you.

Setting priorities
• Setting priorities involves two steps:
1. Listing Tasks That Need To Be Done
First, list all the tasks that you need to complete
for the day or the week. Do not evaluate the
tasks just write them down.
2. Prioritizing tasks on the list
Once you have listed all the tasks that need to be
completed, evaluate each task and set your
priorities based on the following criteria:
1. Judgment
1. Judgment
• You are the best judge of your time and how you
should spent it.
• Prioritize tasks you think are most important and do
them first.
• For example : compare these tasks. Its obvious that
your Mathematics homework is more important than
Going shopping with friends .
• Thus, if you do your homework first before going out
with your friends, you will ensure that what is
important gets done while the time remaining can be
used other activities.
2. Timing
• Knowing our deadlines will also help us in
setting our priorities.
• It is obvious that we should complete tasks
which are more urgent.
• For example, you have two assignments to be
completed by the end of this week: one is due
this Wednesday and the other on Friday.
Clearly, you should prioritize the one that
needs to be completed by Wednesday.

Once you have set your priorities, carry out
the tasks accordingly based on your list.
Once you have completed one task, move
on the next. This way, you will find that
your time is effectively used, and you
will even have more time to do other
things.
• You could use the “123” methods to set your
priorities by putting each task on your list into the
following categories:
A. Priority 1-”must do” B. Priority 2-”should do” C. Priority 3-”nice to do”
These are the critical
items that you must do
first.

• Bear in mind that your priorities can be flexible,
and they can change over time. Today’s “priority 2”
may become tomorrow’s “priority 1” as deadline
approaches.
• Also, do not be over ambitious about completing all
the tasks that you have listed. other wise you will
end up feeling pressured at the end of the day if you
do not manage to complete every thing.
• You can still do them at the following day, since
you have already accomplished those which are
important or urgent for the day.

Study Smart
• Nowadays, there is no guarantee that you will
succeed if you study hard.
• Reading your books 24 hours a day does not
guarantee that you will pass with flying colors.
• The key success is not only to study hard but
to study smart.
• Most of us spend a lot of time and effort
reading countless facts and formulas, yet we
cannot seem to recall what we have read.
Study Smart
• So when we plan our study schedule, we need to
consider our daily energy cycle.
– Some of us are at our best early in the morning
– While others perform well at night.
Therefore, we need to understand our energy
cycle in order to find our prime time.
I.e. the time we are able to perform best, and
organize our study schedule according to our
prime time.

 Which time do you think it’s best for you to read
and memorize your lessons? And Which place?

Based on the typical energy cycle chart
above, its clear that most of our prime
time is in the morning between 8:00 a.m
and 11:00 a.m. most of us should be able
to perform much better during this period
our enerrgy is at its peak. Hence our
study schedule should be arranged
accordingly.
Importance of a Schedule
• As a student, there will be a lot of homework,
assignments, projects, tests and examinations that
need to be completed.
• Therefore, it is necessary to keep track of all these
tasks in an efficient and systematic way so that
they can be effectively carried out and completed.
• To do so, you need to prepare a weekly timetable
for the whole semester.
• This timetable will help you focus on your study
goals and ensure that your time is used
effectively.

A. How many Hours of classes does he have in a week
B. How Many hours Does he Spend ?
– Watching TV ?
– Doing his home work ?
C. What are the Strengths of and weaknesses of his
time table ?
D. Generally, do you think that Jason's time table is
good? If not how would you plan it differently?

Do not evaluate the tasks just write them down. 2. Prioritizing tasks on the list Once you have listed all the tasks that need to be completed, evaluate each task and set your priorities based on the following criteria: 1. Judgment

Timing • Knowing our deadlines will also help us in setting our priorities. • It is obvious that we should complete tasks which are more urgent. • For example, you have two assignments to be completed by the end of this week: one is due this Wednesday and the other on Friday. Clearly, you should prioritize the one that needs to be completed by Wednesday.
