PROFESSIONAL REFERENCE FOR AUSTIN SMITH
Tough Mudder is the leading adventure event series in the world. Consisting of a grueling 10-12 mile mud run
obstacle course, over 1 million participants have completed the event in 7 different countries since its founding in
2010.
Austin joined the Tough Mudder Europe team based in London on the 28th July 2014 for a 4 week internship. As
part of the internship Austin spent 3 weeks in the Tough Mudder office and 1 week on an event site helping the
team prepare for and deliver Tough Mudder South West.
During his time in the office Austin was responsible for finding exciting new event locations for our UK events. This
role involved the initial search and approach to potential venues and managing Tough Mudder’s venue library. In
this role Austin displayed excellent research and communications skills and an ability to analyze potential event
locations against Tough Mudder’s venue criteria.
Tough Mudder South West had more than 10,000 participants over the weekend and Austin joined the team on site
for the final week of preparations and the live event. Austin’s role was wide ranging, he contributed to a number of
projects including preparation of the course and event village, data management, crew catering, administrative
support and field warehouse support.
Both in the office and on the event site, Tough Mudder has a dynamic and fast-paced work environment. Austin
was able to hit the ground running, actively seeking out new tasks and working with minimal guidance. One of
Austin’s great assets is his friendly, positive manner and can do attitude. This coupled with his willingness to get
stuck in, made him a valuable and much appreciated member of the team.
