1. The Asian Studies Center, named a National
Undergraduate Resource Center (Title VI NRC)
since 2000 by the U.S. Department of Education,
directs one of the largest, most diverse programs
of education about Asia in the Midwest. Unlike
comparable programs, the Center is distinguished
by its comprehensive approach to Central, East,
North, South, Southeast, and West Asia.
Principal activities of the Center:
Serves as a hub for Asia-related activities
at Michigan State University.
Acts as a conduit to and partners with
faculty, student groups, and community
members.
Develops, hosts, and promotes
conferences, non-credit educational, and
cultural events on and off campus.
Provides financial support for faculty
research and conferences.
Offers fellowships and scholarships for
students interested in Asian language
and area studies.

2. For Students
Scholarships and Fellowships
Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS)
Fellowships: The FLAS Fellowship provides awards
to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in
programs combining the study of a modern foreign
language with Asian-focused academic or professional
area courses.
Shao-Chang Lee Scholarship and Paper Competition:
Scholarships are awarded to outstanding students who
are pursuing a program that includes Asian studies.
Students may also submit an Asia-related research paper.
Student Organizations
Events: The Center partners with and sponsors events
organized by Asia-related student organizations such as
the Silk Road Chinese Orchestra, the Indonesian student
association (PERMIAS), the Korean Student Organization,
and many more!
Majors and Specialization
Asian Studies Majors: MSU offers 12 majors in
four colleges: College of Arts and Letters, College of
Education, College of Social Science, and James Madison
College. Examples include: International Relations,
Japanese, Teaching Arabic, and World Politics.
Asian Studies Specialization: Provides undergraduate
students a way to create a multi-disciplinary specialty
with an Asian focus. For advising, contact the College of

Studying Abroad
Office of Study Abroad: Offers students 46 programs in
12 Asian countries. For more information:

Japan Center for Michigan Universities: A consortium
of the 15 public universities in Michigan, featuring a
living-learning center on the shores of Lake Biwa in
Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. For more information:

Language Offerings
The Department of Linguistics & Germanic, Slavic, Asian
and African Languages offers Arabic, Chinese, Hindi,
Korean, Japanese, and Russian along with 15 other Asian
Less Commonly Taught Languages at all levels.
For Faculty
Affiliated Faculty
There are over 200 faculty at MSU engaged in
Asia-related research, teaching, and outreach efforts with
wide disciplinary and geographic range, and who work in
affiliation with the Center.
Sponsorship and Support
The Center sponsors affiliated faculty for events, provides
travel funds for professional development, helps faculty
develop curriculum, and collaborates with faculty in grant
writing.
Delia Koo Global Faculty Endowment: Aims to facilitate
the incorporation of international and global studies,
especially of Asia, in teaching, research, and outreach
at MSU. Funds are available for faculty research and

Strategic Partnership Grants:
Funds provide partial support of travel and other costs to
develop strategic partnerships for MSU faculty and their
partners coming from abroad. For more information:

ForTeachers
K-12 Educational Outreach
School Programs: Offering a wide variety of free school
programs featuring presentations and hands-on activities
for grades K-12.
Linking AllTypes ofTeachers to International Cross-
Cultural Education (LATTICE): A collaborative effort
between area studies centers, the College of Education,
international graduate education students, and 13
school districts to encourage a global perspective in
K-12 classrooms by providing training, resources, and
networking of teachers of all levels.
Workshops forTeachers: Hosts the workshops for the
teachers of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean annually as
well as a Teaching on East Asia Seminar.
Windows on Asia (WOA): A website providing electronic
educational resources to K-12 educators and students.

Shiga Exchange Program: High school students from the
U.S. and Japan’s Shiga Prefecture join together for a water
science program and cultural exchange in the Great Lakes
and the Lake Biwa/Shiga Prefecture.
For Everyone
Community Outreach
The Center’s Outreach program works with community
colleges, libraries, and other organizations to increase
awareness of Asian cultures and societies through
educational activities.
Midwest Institute for International/
Intercultural Education (MIIIE)
The Center collaborates with MIIIE to support
community college faculty development through
curriculum workshops on Asian languages and culture.
On Campus Events
Lectures: The Center invites the professional community
and MSU’s faculty to present lectures, seminars,
workshops, and panel discussions on hot topics in Asian
affairs.
Film screenings: The Center sponsors screenings of
Asia-related films throughout the year.
Conferences: The Center plans and implements regional,
national, and international conferences related to Asia.
Recent examples include the Midwest Conference on
Asian Affairs (MCAA) and the American Association of
Teachers of Korean (AATK) conference.
Other Services
Video/DVD Collection: The Center houses a large
collection of videos and DVDs for use by students and
faculty.
Library Collection: Librarians with Asian expertise
manage the MSU Libraries’ comprehensive Asian
collections, which include the MSU Vietnam archive and
an all-Asia comic book and popular culture section.
