NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – 09/17/15
BLACK STUDENT LAW ASSOCIATION TO HOST UNC MOVEMENT OF YOUTH
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – UNC School of Law’s Black Student Law Association will host UNC
Movement of Youth, a mentorship program facilitated by UNC-Chapel Hill students, on
Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015, at UNC School of Law for the first Saturday Academy of the semester.
The event will be held 9:45 a.m.-1 p.m. The topic for the Saturday Academy will be “Mock
Trial: Prosecution not Execution.”
Donovan Livingston, a graduate student at Harvard University, described his experience
as a Movement of Youth mentor as his, “first opportunity to reach out to students and encourage
them to avoid the mistakes I had made, and to be unafraid of setting high expectations.
Movement of Youth was my first opportunity to pour into the lives of young people.”
UNC Movement of Youth provides “Saturday Academies” each month for middle and
high school students and their mentors. Each Saturday Academy provides a variety of sessions to
challenge students intellectually, physically, and socially. The upcoming event will focus on
teaching the students how our judicial system operates. During the event, Movement of Youth
officers will facilitate discussions surrounding cases such as Sandra Bland, Freddie Gray, Mike
Brown, and Eric Garner.
Movement of Youth was founded in 2006 by Atrayus Goode while he was a junior at
UNC- CH. Movement of Youth aspires to be the nation’s leading movement for young people to
disrupt the status quo and build a safer, smarter, more socially conscious world. To learn more
