“The lack of access to proper nutrition is
not only fueling obesity, it is leading to
food insecurity and hunger among our
children.”
Tom Vilsack
“Obesity affects every aspect of a people's
lives, from health to relationships.”
Jane Velez-Mitchell
“Childhood obesity isn't some simple,
discrete issue. There's no one cause we
can pinpoint. There's no one program we
can fund to make it go away. Rather, it's
an issue that touches on every aspect of
how we live and how we work.”
Michelle Obama
Special Offer:
Simple Definition Of Obesity
The definition of obesity is having an excessive amount of body fat.
It is not only a cosmetic issue it is a major health issue leading to
health risks such as heart attracts, heart disease, high blood
pressure, and diabetes.
Doctor use a formula called “body mass index” or BMI to calculate
the levels of body fat. Adults with BMI’s over 30 are considered
obese. Extreme obesity, which is sometimes called severe or
morbid obesity, is when the BMI levels are 40 or higher. With
morbid obesity, people are more likely to have serious health
issues.
In America, one in three people are considered obese. The
seriousness of this causes many to start a weight loss program to
avoid the hazards of the excessive weight.
The symptoms associated with obesity are difficulty sleeping,
snoring, sleep apnea, pain in the joints and back, excessive
sweating, always feeling hot, rashes or infections in the folds of the
skin, feeling out of breath with minor activity, daytime sleepiness or
fatigue and depression. If you have any of these signs or
symptoms, seek medical attention. Your doctor can counsel you
how to decrease you risks related to the obesity. Through dietary
changes and increased activity, you will be able to reduce the
symptoms and health risks. In some cases, medication is
prescribed as well as weight loss surgery can be performed.
Causes And Complications Of Obesity
The causes of obesity is directly related to the over consumption of
calories compared to the amount of calorie burned with physical
activity. There are genetic and hormonal influences with some
people that are obese. The main causes for obesity are inactivity in
the daily life. The inability to burn the excess fat consumed, leads
to the body storing the fat instead of ridding the body of it.
Watching television is one the leading causes to obesity.
Unhealthy diet and eating habits high in calories from fast foods,
skipping breakfast, eating most of the calories at the evening meal
or for a late night snack, consuming high calorie drinks, and eating
too large of portions. Learning to change the eating habits will help
combat obesity.
When a woman is pregnant, they gain weight yet after the birth,
they find it difficult to lose the excess pounds. The weight from the
pregnancy often leads to obesity when it is not lost in the future.
Getting less than seven hours of sleep at night causes the
hormones to change by increasing the appetite leading to the
person to crave foods high in calories and carbohydrates. This
results in weight gain.
Some medications lead to weight gain when the weight is not
compensated with diet and physical activity. The types of
medications leading to weight gain include antidepressants, anti-
seizure medications, diabetes medication, steroids, beta-blockers,
and antipsychotic medication.
Medical problems can cause obesity such as Prader-Willi syndrome,
Cushing’s syndrome, and polycystic ovary syndrome to name a few.
Arthritis can also lead to obesity due to the inactivity levels.
Obesity is not the same as being overweight and it is most often
not caused by overeating. Studies and research have shown that
the most common factor in determining risks of obesity is genetics.
People that suffer from morbid obesity often have a family history
of weight problems and obesity. However, there are other factors
that can increase the risk of obesity and make people more prone
to it.
Environmental factors often go hand in hand with genetic factors. If
you are already dealing with genetic factors that are leading you
towards a life of obesity, the lifestyle and environmental factors
that are most common in America can make it nearly impossible to
control your weight. Some environmental factors that impact the
ability to control weight include fast food chains, living in a
suburban area where you have to have a car to get around, and
spending long days sitting at a desk. All of these factors can
influence metabolism and the best use of fat storage within the
body. People that suffer from morbid obesity cannot have anything
less than a total environment change in order to be successful and
get to a healthy weight.
Metabolism is another factor that figures in to obesity. It used to be
a common belief that people could lose weight simply by burning
calories and consuming less than what you were burning. It has
now been proven that this is not the case for some people.
Researchers that are studying obesity have started looking at a new
theory that is known as the “set point.” This is like a gauge in the
brain that prevents people from gaining or losing weight. If you
attempt to bypass this gauge and significantly cut the intake of
calories, you brain will then override you and will lower your
metabolism and decrease your activity. This will force your body to
regain any of the weight that you have lost.
There are many complications that are associated with obesity.
Each of these complications can have life threatening, dire
consequences to your health. One of the most common problems
that occur when a person has tried and failed many diets is
depression. They start feeling like they are not good enough and
not able to lose the weight. Their self image continues to
deteriorate.
Diabetes is another common problem. People that suffer from
obesity develop insulin resistance. This leads to diabetes and many
other health complications. There are many organs and systems
that can be affected by this.
Heartburn and Acid Reflux plague nearly all people suffering from
obesity. This can lead to pain and problems. There can be a need
for surgery and many other treatments. Prolonged acid reflux can
lead to cancer in the throat.
These are just a few of the many complications of obesity. There
are many others. The illnesses above are some of the most
common and most prevalent. They are almost guaranteed to occur
if you suffer from obesity.
Solution For Obesity
Exercise for Obesity-Personal training is an excellent option for
anyone, but especially someone who's obese and looking to lose
weight and get healthy. However, because of the gym-intimidation
factor, there are plenty of obese people who miss out on the
opportunity to work one-on-one with an expert. One option, if you
want to avoid the masses, is to work privately with a personal
trainer. You can opt for hiring a trainer to come to your home or
work with a trainer at a personal training studio.
Permanent Solution to Obesity - There is a permanent solution to
obesity! This permanent solution is known as the Gastric Bypass
Surgery. This surgery must be performed by a certified doctor.
Thousands of obese people has permanently lost tens of kilos with
this fool proof method. We urge you to find out more about Gastric
Bypass Surgery as the permanent solution to obesity! It works.
Overweight And Obesity Facts
Overweight is the amount of body weight including muscles, bone,
fat, and water that are in excess. Obesity is the excess of
accumulated body fat. It is possible to be overweight based on
factors of muscle, such as the case of body builders, which have
muscle that weighs three times the amount as fat. Most people that
are overweight are also considered obese.
One in three adults age 20-74 is overweight. This equals 58 million
Americans based on the studies from 1980 to 1991, with the
numbers growing every day. Overweight and obesity are known risk
factors for heart disease, high blood pressure, gallbladder disease,
diabetes, some forms of cancer, breathing problems, and arthritis.
Women with more than 25% body fat and men with 30% of body
fat are considered obese. It is hard to really measure body fat
based on the fact muscle weighs more than fat and the calculations
used to measure body mass index (BMI) does not take into
consideration the factor of the amounts of muscle on the person’s
body. The most accepted method of calculating body fat is the
underwater method, which is limited to laboratories with special
equipment and not as widely used.
There are two simpler methods for measuring the body fat. One is
the skinfold thickness measurement. This test measures the
thickness of the skin on different areas such as the triceps. The
measurements vary based on the skill of the person taking the
measurements. The other test is bioelectric impedance analysis
(BIA). BIA sends a small amount of electrical current through the
body to estimate the total body water levels. The higher amounts of
water levels indicate the amounts of muscle matter. Yet this
procedure may not be accurate for people that are severely obese.
The numbers of overweight adults in America in the age range 20
to 74 years old for females are 32 million and men are 26 million.
The numbers of overweight youth ages 6 to 17 years old is about
4.7 million or 11% of the children in that age group.
Some of the primary reason for people being overweight can be
seen in the foods consumed and the exercise levels practiced. The
percentage of dietary fat in adults is 34%. Saturated fat is 12%.
Extra calories consumed to gain a pound or to burn a pound is
3,500 calories. The number of women trying to lose weight is 33 to
40%. The number of men trying to lose weight is 20 to 24%. The
average calories burnt while eating is .023 kcal per minute. The
annual number of deaths related to poor diet and inactivity is over
300,000.
High blood pressure in obese people costs $1.5 billion with breast
and colon cancer costing $1.9 billion. The indirect costs related to
obesity in weight reduction products and a service that includes diet
foods, products, and programs is $33 billion a year.
Obesity Risks
Obesity is having too much body fat. The body consists of water,
protein, fat, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, bones, and muscle.
When the body has too much fat you have a much higher risk of
developing heart disease as well as high blood pressure, high
cholesterol, diabetes, and stroke.
Obesity increases the risks of heart disease since it raises the levels
of cholesterol, lowers the good cholesterol, raises the blood
pressure, and can cause diabetes. Even if a person does not have
the any of the mentioned medical problems, obesity does highly
increase the risks for heart disease. It is the major cause of
gallbladder disease and harms the heart and the blood vessels as
well as degenerative joint disease.
Obesity is caused generally by consuming more calories than used
in physical activity or other daily activities. When too many calories
or too much saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol is consumed,
the levels of cholesterol in the blood rises increase the risks of
heart disease.
To determine if a person is obese a test called body mass index or
BMI is used to calculate the obesity factor. This type of test is
widely used and even though it does not take into consideration the
amount of muscle a person has, it is pretty accurate to determine
the health levels of a person and their general amounts of body fat.
A standard measure, if a person is obese, is if the waistline in a
woman is more than 35 inches and in a man is more than 40
inches, they are considered high risk for being obese.
Using the BMI to calculate the fat of the body use the following
example:
Weight 150 pounds
Height 5’9” = 69 inches
Divide the weight in pounds by the height in inches squared (69*69
= 4761) equals .0315 multiplied by 703 equals 22.14 BMI rate. The
22.14 is in the healthy range for body mass.
The BMI ranges for the body are 18.5 or less is considered
underweight, 18.6 to 24.9 is considered healthy, 25.0 to 29.5 is
considered overweight, and 30.0 or more is considered obese with
40.0 being considered extreme obesity.
To help prevent obesity eat a healthy diet of fresh fruits and
vegetables with whole grains, less fat from meats such as fish,
chicken and lean beef, and nuts. The foods with fewer fats will help
with the risks of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high
cholesterol, arthritis, and obesity.
Add an exercise regime to your life style. Take up walking for thirty
minutes every other day to get some physical activity in your life.
Walk instead of driving places, including at work, when you usually
take the elevator take the stairs instead.
Tips For Dealing with Obesity – Prevention Is
Your Best Treatment
Over the last 20 years obesity has become a serious problem for
many people. There are often many reasons why this problem may
occur. Some of the most common reasons that many people are
affected by obesity include such issues as lifestyle, eating habits,
family history, lack of exercise and even some illnesses and
medications.
When it comes to obesity which is caused by factors such as
lifestyle choices, eating habits and lack of illness there are ways to
correct this issue. Simple changes which may include changing your
eating habits, increasing your exercise level and making changes to
your particular lifestyle may be all that is needed. While this may
sound like a simple thing it often requires a lot of hard work to
actually be effective.
When it comes to eating habits it is important to remember that
excessive sugar and carbohydrates should be avoided. Instead of
eating snacks which are loaded with these components eating
larger amounts of fruits and vegetables can be very beneficial.
Exercise is another factor which is very important in matters of
obesity and weight loss. The less physical exercise a person
participates in the more likely that person is to become obese.
Exercise is a way for our bodies to work off the calories that we
take in. When these calories are not burned off there is nowhere for
them to go but to build up in our bodies. This results in weight gain
and thus over time leads to obesity.
Family history can be a big determining factor in matters of obesity.
If a person’s parents are obese this greatly increases the chances
that they will be too. This can be overcome however by taking
steps to prevent this from occurring. Some steps may include
eating healthy and exercising more.
In some cases little can be done to prevent or reverse obesity. This
is often the case when it is due to various illnesses or medications.
In some cases the medication causing the problem may be changed
but in some cases even this is not enough to correct the problem
once the damage has been done. When obesity is due to illness it is
sometimes beneficial to treat the illness or condition. In many cases
once this treatment occurs weight loss may be possible.
Regardless of what the specific cause of obesity is in your particular
case, prevention is always the best measure. It is always much
easier to prevent a problem from occurring than it is to correct the
problem once it has occurred. While this may be possible in some
cases not all instances of obesity can be prevented.
When prevention is not possible the best thing a person can do is
work hard to correct the problem to the best of their ability.
Sometimes this is effective, sometimes it is not. The only way to
know if it will work for you is to try and keep trying. Remember we
only fail when we fail to try.
Childhood Obesity
It is estimated that 5-25 percent of children and teenagers in
America today are suffering from obesity. Obesity among children is
on the rise. More and more children and teenagers are becoming
obese. While it is well known that obese infants do not always
remain obese into childhood and not all obese children remain
obese into adulthood, obesity is increasing with age. This means
that there is a much higher risk of remaining obese throughout
your lifetime if you are obese as a child.
Secondary Problems of Childhood Obesity
There are many problems that are created for children secondary to
obesity. Besides the obvious risk of obesity in adulthood, obesity in
a child is the most common cause for pediatric hypertension.
Childhood obesity is also linked to Type II diabetes mellitus.
In addition there is an increased risk of having coronary artery
disease. There is undue stress placed on all of the weight bearing
joints. Obese children also have lower self esteem and poor
relationships with their peers. Some specialists have said that the
most substantial impact on a child related to obesity is social and
psychological problems.
Causes of Childhood Obesity:
• improper balance between energy that is taken in and energy that
is put out
• genetic factors
Hereditary factors play a role in the development of obesity in
children. Infants that are born to overweight mothers have been
shown to be less active and to weigh significantly more than babies
that were born to mothers with a normal weight by the time they
were three months old. It would seem that there is a hereditary,
inborn trait that causes babies to want to conserve energy and do
less physical activity, thus gaining more weight.
Additional Causes of Childhood Obesity:
• lack of physical exercise
• over indulgence in “junk food”
• improper dietary training
Do not be fooled into thinking these are the only reasons for
overweight children today. It is quite possible there may be hidden
physical and psychological causes for the child being overweight.
Therefore it is imperative and strongly recommended that a
professional health care provider be consulted for proper diagnoses
and treatment.
Treatment for Overweight Children:
There are a variety of treatments available for childhood obesity.
These treatments and programs are most often not associated with
weight loss. Instead, the plan is to slow or stop weight gain so that
the child has the ability to grow into their body weight over a period
of time.
It has been proven that proper and early intervention is the best
way to start modifying obesity issues. Studies have shown that it is
easier to change a child’s eating and exercise habits than it is to
change an adults.
Treatments such as;
• physical activity and exercise There will also be
• management of the child’s diet involved There may also be a need
for a
• behavior modification plan
Often the easiest way to correct a problem is to change the thinking
and the learned behaviors of the child.
Make no mistake, that cute overweight baby can develop lifetime
health problems, if proper steps are not taken early on.
Cholesterol And Obesity
High levels of cholesterol, often found in overweight and obese
people, usually lead to a higher risk of heart disease and strokes.
Cholesterol is produced by the liver and found in high fat foods. It
is a waxy substance that our body requires to help build cell walls,
make vitamin D, make some hormones, and help us digest fats.
Our bodies make it naturally so the added cholesterol we get from
fatty foods; is not required. In fact it is in excess and thus why it
can cause health issues.
Cholesterol is a type of lipid, the part of our cells that help with
energy storage, found in all animals. Any products coming from
animals like milk, cheese, meat, eggs, and anything produced from
these products, all contain cholesterol. Our livers already make
enough cholesterol for us to survive.
When eating foods high in cholesterol, we are taking in more than
our bodies can handle, so it builds up. Unfortunately, one of the
places it likes to build up is in the arteries leading to our organs,
especially our hearts. Cholesterol travels through our blood and the
excess tends to stick in spots and form plaques. When this
happens, blockages occur. These blockages, if severe enough, then
result in heart attacks and strokes.
Cholesterol is not the only cause of heart disease and strokes, but it
is high up on the charts. There are many myths when it comes to
cholesterol. One of the biggest myths is that only overweight and
obese individuals have high levels of cholesterol. This is not true.
High levels of cholesterol are due to the types of food we eat. The
more fast, convenience, and processed foods we eat, the more
likely we are to have higher levels of cholesterol. A person could be
six feet tall, weigh 180 pounds and yet have a higher level of
cholesterol than the person next to them who is five foot seven and
weighs 300 pounds. It’s all about the food.
Another myth is that we have to be old to have these high levels.
Again, this is not true. Since children are exposed to fast foods at a
very young age, they are more likely nowadays to develop heart
disease at a younger age than their parents before them. Many
doctors’ advise getting heart check-ups starting from the age of
twenty.
Many people believe that taking certain vitamins – such as C and E
– will automatically reduce our levels of cholesterol. This could not
be further from the truth. Nothing but certain prescribed medicines
can reduce the levels of cholesterol. However even the medicines
cannot do it on their own. They have to be taken in conjunction
with a change in diet and eating healthier foods. There are many
different triglyceride and LDL cholesterol reducing medicines on the
market, such as Lipitor, Niacin, and Vytorin.
Regardless of the method of treatment taken, having bad
cholesterol is not permanent. It can be reduced. By lowering these
levels, we are diminishing our risk of heart disease, heart attacks
and strokes.

cupboards. The processed foods are always full of calories so when
you are replacing them with fresh fruit and vegetables. These are
also great for your skin. Also eating fresh fruits and vegetables will
help reduce your blood pressure, reduce your risk of heart disease,
and cancer among others.
* Lemon juice is another thing that may help even though it’s a
little drastic. Lemon juice has been proven to reduce your cravings.
If you drink 2 glasses you will not feel hungry at all throughout the
day
* You need to also be sure to drink plenty of water. The water will
help regulate your body temperature. Your body also demands the
water for overall health.
* Also eating a healthy and balanced diet is extremely important.
This is especially true when it comes to breakfast. By no means
should you skip your breakfast.
* Next you will want to raise your metabolism rate. You achieve this
by doing physical exercise. When you are working out you are
burning necessary fat and calories that will aide you in your weight

  • 2. “The lack of access to proper nutrition is not only fueling obesity, it is leading to food insecurity and hunger among our children.” Tom Vilsack “Obesity affects every aspect of a people's lives, from health to relationships.” Jane Velez-Mitchell “Childhood obesity isn't some simple, discrete issue. There's no one cause we can pinpoint. There's no one program we can fund to make it go away. Rather, it's an issue that touches on every aspect of how we live and how we work.” Michelle Obama
  • 4. Simple Definition Of Obesity The definition of obesity is having an excessive amount of body fat. It is not only a cosmetic issue it is a major health issue leading to health risks such as heart attracts, heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Doctor use a formula called “body mass index” or BMI to calculate the levels of body fat. Adults with BMI’s over 30 are considered obese. Extreme obesity, which is sometimes called severe or morbid obesity, is when the BMI levels are 40 or higher. With morbid obesity, people are more likely to have serious health issues. In America, one in three people are considered obese. The seriousness of this causes many to start a weight loss program to avoid the hazards of the excessive weight. The symptoms associated with obesity are difficulty sleeping, snoring, sleep apnea, pain in the joints and back, excessive sweating, always feeling hot, rashes or infections in the folds of the skin, feeling out of breath with minor activity, daytime sleepiness or fatigue and depression. If you have any of these signs or symptoms, seek medical attention. Your doctor can counsel you
  • 5. how to decrease you risks related to the obesity. Through dietary changes and increased activity, you will be able to reduce the symptoms and health risks. In some cases, medication is prescribed as well as weight loss surgery can be performed. Causes And Complications Of Obesity The causes of obesity is directly related to the over consumption of calories compared to the amount of calorie burned with physical activity. There are genetic and hormonal influences with some people that are obese. The main causes for obesity are inactivity in the daily life. The inability to burn the excess fat consumed, leads to the body storing the fat instead of ridding the body of it. Watching television is one the leading causes to obesity. Unhealthy diet and eating habits high in calories from fast foods, skipping breakfast, eating most of the calories at the evening meal or for a late night snack, consuming high calorie drinks, and eating too large of portions. Learning to change the eating habits will help combat obesity. When a woman is pregnant, they gain weight yet after the birth, they find it difficult to lose the excess pounds. The weight from the pregnancy often leads to obesity when it is not lost in the future.
  • 6. Getting less than seven hours of sleep at night causes the hormones to change by increasing the appetite leading to the person to crave foods high in calories and carbohydrates. This results in weight gain. Some medications lead to weight gain when the weight is not compensated with diet and physical activity. The types of medications leading to weight gain include antidepressants, anti- seizure medications, diabetes medication, steroids, beta-blockers, and antipsychotic medication. Medical problems can cause obesity such as Prader-Willi syndrome, Cushing’s syndrome, and polycystic ovary syndrome to name a few. Arthritis can also lead to obesity due to the inactivity levels. Obesity is not the same as being overweight and it is most often not caused by overeating. Studies and research have shown that the most common factor in determining risks of obesity is genetics. People that suffer from morbid obesity often have a family history of weight problems and obesity. However, there are other factors that can increase the risk of obesity and make people more prone to it. Environmental factors often go hand in hand with genetic factors. If you are already dealing with genetic factors that are leading you towards a life of obesity, the lifestyle and environmental factors that are most common in America can make it nearly impossible to control your weight. Some environmental factors that impact the ability to control weight include fast food chains, living in a suburban area where you have to have a car to get around, and spending long days sitting at a desk. All of these factors can influence metabolism and the best use of fat storage within the body. People that suffer from morbid obesity cannot have anything less than a total environment change in order to be successful and get to a healthy weight. Metabolism is another factor that figures in to obesity. It used to be a common belief that people could lose weight simply by burning calories and consuming less than what you were burning. It has now been proven that this is not the case for some people. Researchers that are studying obesity have started looking at a new theory that is known as the “set point.” This is like a gauge in the
  • 7. brain that prevents people from gaining or losing weight. If you attempt to bypass this gauge and significantly cut the intake of calories, you brain will then override you and will lower your metabolism and decrease your activity. This will force your body to regain any of the weight that you have lost. There are many complications that are associated with obesity. Each of these complications can have life threatening, dire consequences to your health. One of the most common problems that occur when a person has tried and failed many diets is depression. They start feeling like they are not good enough and not able to lose the weight. Their self image continues to deteriorate. Diabetes is another common problem. People that suffer from obesity develop insulin resistance. This leads to diabetes and many other health complications. There are many organs and systems that can be affected by this. Heartburn and Acid Reflux plague nearly all people suffering from obesity. This can lead to pain and problems. There can be a need for surgery and many other treatments. Prolonged acid reflux can lead to cancer in the throat. These are just a few of the many complications of obesity. There are many others. The illnesses above are some of the most common and most prevalent. They are almost guaranteed to occur if you suffer from obesity.
  • 8. Solution For Obesity Exercise for Obesity-Personal training is an excellent option for anyone, but especially someone who's obese and looking to lose weight and get healthy. However, because of the gym-intimidation factor, there are plenty of obese people who miss out on the opportunity to work one-on-one with an expert. One option, if you want to avoid the masses, is to work privately with a personal trainer. You can opt for hiring a trainer to come to your home or work with a trainer at a personal training studio. Permanent Solution to Obesity - There is a permanent solution to obesity! This permanent solution is known as the Gastric Bypass Surgery. This surgery must be performed by a certified doctor. Thousands of obese people has permanently lost tens of kilos with this fool proof method. We urge you to find out more about Gastric Bypass Surgery as the permanent solution to obesity! It works. Overweight And Obesity Facts Overweight is the amount of body weight including muscles, bone, fat, and water that are in excess. Obesity is the excess of accumulated body fat. It is possible to be overweight based on factors of muscle, such as the case of body builders, which have muscle that weighs three times the amount as fat. Most people that are overweight are also considered obese.
  • 9. One in three adults age 20-74 is overweight. This equals 58 million Americans based on the studies from 1980 to 1991, with the numbers growing every day. Overweight and obesity are known risk factors for heart disease, high blood pressure, gallbladder disease, diabetes, some forms of cancer, breathing problems, and arthritis. Women with more than 25% body fat and men with 30% of body fat are considered obese. It is hard to really measure body fat based on the fact muscle weighs more than fat and the calculations used to measure body mass index (BMI) does not take into consideration the factor of the amounts of muscle on the person’s body. The most accepted method of calculating body fat is the underwater method, which is limited to laboratories with special equipment and not as widely used. There are two simpler methods for measuring the body fat. One is the skinfold thickness measurement. This test measures the thickness of the skin on different areas such as the triceps. The measurements vary based on the skill of the person taking the measurements. The other test is bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA). BIA sends a small amount of electrical current through the body to estimate the total body water levels. The higher amounts of water levels indicate the amounts of muscle matter. Yet this procedure may not be accurate for people that are severely obese. The numbers of overweight adults in America in the age range 20 to 74 years old for females are 32 million and men are 26 million. The numbers of overweight youth ages 6 to 17 years old is about 4.7 million or 11% of the children in that age group. Some of the primary reason for people being overweight can be seen in the foods consumed and the exercise levels practiced. The percentage of dietary fat in adults is 34%. Saturated fat is 12%. Extra calories consumed to gain a pound or to burn a pound is 3,500 calories. The number of women trying to lose weight is 33 to 40%. The number of men trying to lose weight is 20 to 24%. The average calories burnt while eating is .023 kcal per minute. The annual number of deaths related to poor diet and inactivity is over 300,000. High blood pressure in obese people costs $1.5 billion with breast
  • 10. and colon cancer costing $1.9 billion. The indirect costs related to obesity in weight reduction products and a service that includes diet foods, products, and programs is $33 billion a year. Obesity Risks Obesity is having too much body fat. The body consists of water, protein, fat, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, bones, and muscle. When the body has too much fat you have a much higher risk of developing heart disease as well as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and stroke. Obesity increases the risks of heart disease since it raises the levels of cholesterol, lowers the good cholesterol, raises the blood pressure, and can cause diabetes. Even if a person does not have the any of the mentioned medical problems, obesity does highly increase the risks for heart disease. It is the major cause of gallbladder disease and harms the heart and the blood vessels as well as degenerative joint disease. Obesity is caused generally by consuming more calories than used in physical activity or other daily activities. When too many calories or too much saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol is consumed, the levels of cholesterol in the blood rises increase the risks of heart disease. To determine if a person is obese a test called body mass index or BMI is used to calculate the obesity factor. This type of test is widely used and even though it does not take into consideration the amount of muscle a person has, it is pretty accurate to determine the health levels of a person and their general amounts of body fat. A standard measure, if a person is obese, is if the waistline in a woman is more than 35 inches and in a man is more than 40 inches, they are considered high risk for being obese. Using the BMI to calculate the fat of the body use the following example: Weight 150 pounds Height 5’9” = 69 inches
  • 11. Divide the weight in pounds by the height in inches squared (69*69 = 4761) equals .0315 multiplied by 703 equals 22.14 BMI rate. The 22.14 is in the healthy range for body mass. The BMI ranges for the body are 18.5 or less is considered underweight, 18.6 to 24.9 is considered healthy, 25.0 to 29.5 is considered overweight, and 30.0 or more is considered obese with 40.0 being considered extreme obesity. To help prevent obesity eat a healthy diet of fresh fruits and vegetables with whole grains, less fat from meats such as fish, chicken and lean beef, and nuts. The foods with fewer fats will help with the risks of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis, and obesity. Add an exercise regime to your life style. Take up walking for thirty minutes every other day to get some physical activity in your life. Walk instead of driving places, including at work, when you usually take the elevator take the stairs instead.
  • 12. Tips For Dealing with Obesity – Prevention Is Your Best Treatment Over the last 20 years obesity has become a serious problem for many people. There are often many reasons why this problem may occur. Some of the most common reasons that many people are affected by obesity include such issues as lifestyle, eating habits, family history, lack of exercise and even some illnesses and medications. When it comes to obesity which is caused by factors such as lifestyle choices, eating habits and lack of illness there are ways to correct this issue. Simple changes which may include changing your eating habits, increasing your exercise level and making changes to your particular lifestyle may be all that is needed. While this may sound like a simple thing it often requires a lot of hard work to actually be effective. When it comes to eating habits it is important to remember that excessive sugar and carbohydrates should be avoided. Instead of eating snacks which are loaded with these components eating larger amounts of fruits and vegetables can be very beneficial. Exercise is another factor which is very important in matters of obesity and weight loss. The less physical exercise a person participates in the more likely that person is to become obese. Exercise is a way for our bodies to work off the calories that we take in. When these calories are not burned off there is nowhere for them to go but to build up in our bodies. This results in weight gain and thus over time leads to obesity. Family history can be a big determining factor in matters of obesity. If a person’s parents are obese this greatly increases the chances that they will be too. This can be overcome however by taking steps to prevent this from occurring. Some steps may include eating healthy and exercising more. In some cases little can be done to prevent or reverse obesity. This is often the case when it is due to various illnesses or medications. In some cases the medication causing the problem may be changed but in some cases even this is not enough to correct the problem
  • 13. once the damage has been done. When obesity is due to illness it is sometimes beneficial to treat the illness or condition. In many cases once this treatment occurs weight loss may be possible. Regardless of what the specific cause of obesity is in your particular case, prevention is always the best measure. It is always much easier to prevent a problem from occurring than it is to correct the problem once it has occurred. While this may be possible in some cases not all instances of obesity can be prevented. When prevention is not possible the best thing a person can do is work hard to correct the problem to the best of their ability. Sometimes this is effective, sometimes it is not. The only way to know if it will work for you is to try and keep trying. Remember we only fail when we fail to try. Childhood Obesity It is estimated that 5-25 percent of children and teenagers in America today are suffering from obesity. Obesity among children is on the rise. More and more children and teenagers are becoming obese. While it is well known that obese infants do not always remain obese into childhood and not all obese children remain obese into adulthood, obesity is increasing with age. This means that there is a much higher risk of remaining obese throughout your lifetime if you are obese as a child.
  • 14. Secondary Problems of Childhood Obesity There are many problems that are created for children secondary to obesity. Besides the obvious risk of obesity in adulthood, obesity in a child is the most common cause for pediatric hypertension. Childhood obesity is also linked to Type II diabetes mellitus. In addition there is an increased risk of having coronary artery disease. There is undue stress placed on all of the weight bearing joints. Obese children also have lower self esteem and poor relationships with their peers. Some specialists have said that the most substantial impact on a child related to obesity is social and psychological problems. Causes of Childhood Obesity: • improper balance between energy that is taken in and energy that is put out • genetic factors Hereditary factors play a role in the development of obesity in children. Infants that are born to overweight mothers have been shown to be less active and to weigh significantly more than babies that were born to mothers with a normal weight by the time they were three months old. It would seem that there is a hereditary, inborn trait that causes babies to want to conserve energy and do less physical activity, thus gaining more weight. Additional Causes of Childhood Obesity: • lack of physical exercise • over indulgence in “junk food” • improper dietary training Do not be fooled into thinking these are the only reasons for overweight children today. It is quite possible there may be hidden physical and psychological causes for the child being overweight. Therefore it is imperative and strongly recommended that a professional health care provider be consulted for proper diagnoses and treatment.
  • 15. Treatment for Overweight Children: There are a variety of treatments available for childhood obesity. These treatments and programs are most often not associated with weight loss. Instead, the plan is to slow or stop weight gain so that the child has the ability to grow into their body weight over a period of time. It has been proven that proper and early intervention is the best way to start modifying obesity issues. Studies have shown that it is easier to change a child’s eating and exercise habits than it is to change an adults. Treatments such as; • physical activity and exercise There will also be • management of the child’s diet involved There may also be a need for a • behavior modification plan Often the easiest way to correct a problem is to change the thinking and the learned behaviors of the child. Make no mistake, that cute overweight baby can develop lifetime health problems, if proper steps are not taken early on. Cholesterol And Obesity High levels of cholesterol, often found in overweight and obese people, usually lead to a higher risk of heart disease and strokes. Cholesterol is produced by the liver and found in high fat foods. It is a waxy substance that our body requires to help build cell walls, make vitamin D, make some hormones, and help us digest fats. Our bodies make it naturally so the added cholesterol we get from fatty foods; is not required. In fact it is in excess and thus why it can cause health issues. Cholesterol is a type of lipid, the part of our cells that help with energy storage, found in all animals. Any products coming from animals like milk, cheese, meat, eggs, and anything produced from these products, all contain cholesterol. Our livers already make enough cholesterol for us to survive.
  • 16. When eating foods high in cholesterol, we are taking in more than our bodies can handle, so it builds up. Unfortunately, one of the places it likes to build up is in the arteries leading to our organs, especially our hearts. Cholesterol travels through our blood and the excess tends to stick in spots and form plaques. When this happens, blockages occur. These blockages, if severe enough, then result in heart attacks and strokes. Cholesterol is not the only cause of heart disease and strokes, but it is high up on the charts. There are many myths when it comes to cholesterol. One of the biggest myths is that only overweight and obese individuals have high levels of cholesterol. This is not true. High levels of cholesterol are due to the types of food we eat. The more fast, convenience, and processed foods we eat, the more likely we are to have higher levels of cholesterol. A person could be six feet tall, weigh 180 pounds and yet have a higher level of cholesterol than the person next to them who is five foot seven and weighs 300 pounds. It’s all about the food.
  • 17. Another myth is that we have to be old to have these high levels. Again, this is not true. Since children are exposed to fast foods at a very young age, they are more likely nowadays to develop heart disease at a younger age than their parents before them. Many doctors’ advise getting heart check-ups starting from the age of twenty. Many people believe that taking certain vitamins – such as C and E – will automatically reduce our levels of cholesterol. This could not be further from the truth. Nothing but certain prescribed medicines can reduce the levels of cholesterol. However even the medicines cannot do it on their own. They have to be taken in conjunction with a change in diet and eating healthier foods. There are many different triglyceride and LDL cholesterol reducing medicines on the market, such as Lipitor, Niacin, and Vytorin. Regardless of the method of treatment taken, having bad cholesterol is not permanent. It can be reduced. By lowering these levels, we are diminishing our risk of heart disease, heart attacks and strokes. Proven Obesity Weight Loss Tips If you have been told by your doctor that you are obese, you really need to choose to lose some weight to avoid some serious health issues. In the American population today, 1 out of 3 people are considered obese. A lot of the obesity is caused by the American society in general. In just recent years we have developed a fast paced world. full of fast food and quick meals. These meal are not good fat burners, so our bodies store the fat till later. This is what causes the obesity. There are ways that you can lose the weight; if you are willing to give it a try. Here are just a few tips that you can use to lose your weight. * Eating small meals 6 times a day is a great way for anyone to begin their weight loss program. This will help you increase your metabolism and keep your hunger cravings away. It will also provide you with plenty of energy.
  • 18. * Eating a lot of greens and vegetables are another great way for you to lose weight. You should put these in place of that junk food. When you feel like snacking train yourself to grab something like a carrot or celery instead of those potato chips; you have up in your cupboards.
