Hand and arm movements. Important part of our
visual picture when we speak in public.
a movement of part of the body, especially a hand
or the head, to express an idea or meaning.
WHY GESTURES ARE IMPORTANT?
6. They are reinforcements of the words
and ideas we are trying to convey and
a non-verbal representation of how we
feel.
It enhances our message and we will
appear confident and relaxed.
7. If used unconsciously or
incorrectly however, speaker can
distract their audience or send
wrong non-verbal message.
8. Distractive Gestures
Hands on hips- Parental, overbearing, superiority
Crossed arms- Disagreeing, wanting to protect
Hands crossed in front- feeling weak, timid, needing
protection.
Hands joined behind your back- you’re on parade.
Hands in pockets- Nervousness.
You can use these gestures if your speech calls
for it but do it in purpose.
9. Swaying
Leaning
Tapping the fingers
Biting or licking the lips
Frowning
Adjusting the clothing
10. Symbolic gestures
Communicate words , direction, numbers or
position.
Ex.
Thumbs-up -means agree.
Three fingers -means number three
Pointing finger- accusatory
Pointing to show position- up, down, behind ,
beside
11. Descriptive Gestures
Communicate an idea or movement. They help
audience understand comparison and contrast,
visualize the size, shape or movement.
Spreading hands apart- show length.
Using hands to show a shape.
14. Facial Expressions
Why facial expressions are important?
This skill allows you to use less words, to
show emotion and send message directly
your audience’s hearts and minds.

A face with frowning mouth
and eyes and eyebrows.
Shows grumpiness and
irritation to disgust and
outrage.
