بادست بر عمر بنیاد که باده بیار , بنیادست سست سخت امل قصر که بیا
Come! For the foundation of the palace of hope is weak. Bring wine, that we may drink our
worries away (literally: the foundation of life is on the wind)
آنم همت غالمآزادست پذیرد تعلق رنگ هرچه ز , کبود چرخ زیر که
I am a slave to ambition of the one who, beneath the dark blue sky (in this world) (literally:
wheel), is free of every kind of attachment.
شادست او بمهر غمها همه از خاطر که , رخساری بماه خاطر تعلق مگر
Except attachment for the sake of the one with a face as beautiful as the moon, whose kindness
turns the sorrows of memory into happiness
یادست طریقتم پیر ز حدیث این که , آر عمل در و گیر یاد , کنمت نصیحتی
Let me advise you, learn this, put it into action, that this tale is from the memory of the ancient
Sufi doctrine
دامادست هزار عروس عجوزه این که , نهاد سست جهان از عهد درستی مجو
Don’t search for the righteousness (fairness) of the promise of the world with weak character,
this witch (the world) is the bride of one thousand grooms.
دادست ها مژده چه غیبم عالم سروش , وخراب مست دوش بمیخانه که گویمت چه
What can I tell you, that last night drunk (literally: and broken) he came to the Wine House,
Surosh (Zoroastrian angel of glad tidings) of the world of the unseen (perhaps where the Jin
reside), he bestowed upon me what great news.
آبادست محنت کنج این نه تو نشیمن ,نشین سدره شاهباز نظر بلند ای که
He said, “ You whose gaze is fixed on lofty things, royal falcon who sits on the Sidra tree. Your
perch is not the corner of this place of trial and tribulation.
افتادست چه دامگه درین که ندانمت , صفیر میزنند عرش کنگره ز ترا
They whistle at you from the battlement of the throne, I know not how you have fallen into this
snare (trap).
, یاد از مبر من پند و مخور جهان غمیادست رهروی ز نغزم لطیفه این که
Don’t despair about the world, don’t forget my advice. This subtle point of beauty (of mine), is
from the memory of the wayfarer (Sufi).
نگشادست اختیار در تو و من بر که , بگشای گره جبین وز بده بداده رضا
Be satisfied with what you have been given, Un-wrinkle your brow (literally: unknot your
forehead), The door of free will is not open to us (from me to you).
فریادست جای که ,بیدل بلبل , بنال , گل تبسم در نیست وفا و عهد نشان
2. There is no sign of promise and loyalty in the smile of the flower. Moan (complain), heartless
nightingail, because this is the place of complaining.
خدادادست سخن لطف و خاطر قبول , حافظ بر نظم سست ای میبری چه حسد
Oh weak poets (weak poetic composition) why are you jealous of Hafez? This grace of speech
and receptivity of mind is god given.
