2. LEARNING GOALS
Learning Goal
◻ To understand what landscape degradation is
◻ To give examples of instances of where it has occurred
Success Criteria
◻ I can define land degradation
◻ I can describe way land degradation occurs and give
examples of where that is happening
3. What is Land Degradation
1. Land degradation is the temporary or permanent decline in
the quality of the land and its ability to provide resources,
such as food.
1. It is the way one or more of the land resources (soil, water,
vegetation, rocks, air) has changed for the worse.
We need to use our land sustainably
4. Land Degradation
List all of the things we depend on the Earth’s landscapes for:
◻ What do we need soil for?
◻ Plants?
◻ Timber?
◻ Minerals?
◻ Water?
Now, on your Ipad create a collage showing each of these things
we rely on the earth for
5. INSIDE or OUTSIDE
Think about your local outdoor area and look at it from a particular spot
Think about the landscape and answer these questions:
1. Describe the landscape of the region in which your school is located.
Is it, for example, a flat muddy plain, a hilly area or a low-lying area,
does it have a river nearby?
2. Identify main human and physical elements nearby?
3. Complete the table on the next page by considering the impacts of
the human activities
6. INSIDE or OUTSIDE
Complete each column considering 5 different human activities that
impact our local environment:
HUMAN ACTIVITY POTENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL
IMPACT
IDEA ON HOW TO MINIMISE THE
IMPACT
CREATING A ROAD
7. What causes Land Degradation?
As you look at each image you need to:
1. Describe the landscape
2. List the problems with the land that you see
a. This can include the things that are missing from the environment
but should be there
After this,
3. Describe the problems that could arise from having too
much land like this
