Session I: Research
Educational Needs
The purpose of this session is to highlight the latest developments in light based research and clinical applications with
specific emphasis in dentistry. The field of dentistry has always been at the leading edge of adopting new technologies,
including biomaterials for restorations and implants or novel devices for pain or inflammation relief. Lasers and photonic
devices have aided many aspects of clinical dentistry including effective illumination, curing composites and surgery.
Participants
Dentists, physicians, scientists, health care professionals, engineers and other personnel involved in biomedical
applications of light are invited to participate in this session.
Background Requirements
Participants should have a basic understanding of light biological tissue interactions and basic knowledge of lab and
clinical research.
Instructional Content and/or Expected Learning Outcomes
The presenters will highlight their recent observations on the molecular mechanism and practical utility of using laser-
based technologies for diagnostics and therapy in dentistry. Participants in this session will gain knowledge about the
rationale, approaches and results of using research techniques to better understand lasers for clinical dental applications.
“Hot Topics”

Session II: Clinical Research
Educational Needs
Clinical dentistry has always been at the leading edge of adopting new technologies, including biomaterials for
restorations and implants or novel devices for pain or inflammation relief. While the use of lasers and photonic devices
are increasingly popular, clinical applications and protocol regimens for their use vary widely. This session attempts to
showcase various ongoing and future clinical applications for these devices.
The presenters in this second dental session will highlight current clinical use and evolving clinical research that will aid
development of future applications of laser-based technologies for diagnostics and therapy. Participants in this session will
gain knowledge about clinical applications and latest clinical research in the field of lasers in dentistry.
“Hot Topics”
* Clinical Utility of Lasers in Dentistry Highlighting Both High and Low Power Applications
