Such is its ubiquity in general medical practice that when most people think of radiology, they often think of routine procedures that they would usually encounter during a checkup, including x-rays for broken bones, ultrasound scans for pregnancies, and the occasional MRI or CT scan for internal complaints. Medical imaging often goes beyond diagnosing physical injuries and ailments. Data derived from imaging can be used to provide insight on a broad array of fields, including mental health, and are even used to predict health threats. Mental health is one field that pushes the boundaries of medical imaging and its applications. Through careful examinations of the brain and its activities, neuroscientists are finding ways to predict the development of conditions like deafness in children and distinguish between distinct types of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Scans may even show telltale differences in the brains of people with mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety disorders.
