2. AYURVEDIC HEALING FABRIC
The name ayurvastra is derived from ayurveda ,a 5000 year old
form of treatment by medicinal plants.
The Sanskrit word ‘Ayur’ means life and Vastra means dress.
Ayurvastra is the garment that ensures better health and long
life.
It is a complex system or technique of dyeing clothing using
medicinal plants and herbs.
Normal fabrics like organically grown cotton yarn, jute
fibre, silk, wool etc. are used to make Ayurvastra.
The color of the fabric is gained from the medicinal preparation
only and no other colorants are used
3. DYEING PROCESS
Bleaching
The selected fabric or yarn is first bleached using a preparation
based in cow urine. Cow urine is used along with milk , honey, etc .
Gumming
To make the colours bright,s such as bark of Lodhra (Symplocos
racemosa), Kenduka (Diospyrose ebenum), fruit extracts of
Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) etc are used.
Medication (Dyeing)
The dyed fabrics then go through a seasoning process of 2 weeks
or more before they are ready for use(tailoring)
4. FINISHING
In this type of dyeing, finishing is done by sprinkling pure water
on the cloth and then stretching under pressure, using hand
rolls, aloe vera, castor oil etc.
CURING/SEASONING
The dyed fabrics then go through a seasoning process of 2 weeks
or more before they are ready for use(tailoring)
