- CUI is government-generated or owned information that requires protection and dissemination controls consistent with applicable laws and regulations. It is not classified information.
- Anyone can be an information owner and create CUI if the information is generated for or on behalf of an executive branch agency under a contract and falls into a CUI category.
- CUI falls into two types - CUI Basic, which requires basic protections, and CUI Specified, which has additional marking and handling requirements defined by the information owner.
