Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) refers to unclassified information that requires some level of control over its distribution. CUI includes technical or operational information that is exempt from public disclosure according to US government policies and regulations. It also includes unclassified U.S. information subject to export controls. There are nine categories of information that can be withheld from public release under exemptions to the Freedom of Information Act, including classified information, internal agency practices, information protected by statute, trade secrets, and personal privacy information. Technical CUI specifically refers to unclassified technical data related to military or space applications, including designs, software, and instructions. It includes information that could significantly aid military capabilities if compromised.
