home school. XXXXhas1:1 supportfrom Tonyin thisregularFirstGrade. His supportisprimarily
aroundhisattention/focus. DuringthisobservationXXXXwashappy,productive,sociable and
successful withagreatdeal of attentionsupportfrom Tonyand some fromhisteacher. He isvery
acceptingof Tony’ssupportwhichislargelyinthe formof coachingregardingwhere theyare at/whatto
do inwhole classactivitiesandindividual work(e.g.whentobe onwhatpage,what to workon next
etc). EvenwiththissupportXXXXisdistractible andmotoricallyactive,wigglinghisback,jigglinghisfoot
etc throughout.
Most importantly,XXXXisclearlyinthissetting,highlymotivatedtoworkhardand to please the adults
aroundhim,and withthis kindlycoachingsupporthe isable todo this. Hiswarm relationshipwithhis
1:1 assistant,Tony,whohas a verynatural,‘coach’like ‘buddy’style isidealforhim. Childrenwhoneed
as much cuingand redirectingasXXXXdoesare at riskfor feeling ‘nagged’bythose inthe positionof
havingto redirectthemandthereforthe relationshipwithhisassistantandthe waysinwhich
directing/cueingetcare done become key. A coachingandhighsuccessstyle withinthe contextof a
warm natural relationshipsuchasXXXXhas now as I observedatanyrate is mostlikelytobe successful
whereasamore ‘policing’style bysomeone withoutarelationshipwithXXXXismuchmore likelytobe
experiencedasaversiveandresultinemotional/behavioral fallout.
