What is the reason for 5G, IoT and blockchain have become the
technology triangle?
If 5G can help the Internet of Things and blockchain solve their scalability problems, we hope that
the dream of extremely secure financial transactions, smart cities, and remote surgery will
become a reality. However, from another perspective, the development of 5G, IoT, and
blockchain as independent technologies is also crucial. In fact, these three superior technologies
will shape our future and the future of the entire Internet, and this will ultimately be dominated
by algorithms.
It is difficult for us to talk about 5G, the Internet of Things and the blockchain. Who will bring to
whom? Who will motivate who will move toward the realization of true universal values?
Because each of them affects the other two, how much potential will these three emerging
technologies release once they are merged?
The biggest technology wave that is sweeping the world today is 5G, which uses the latest cellular
network technology. Experts and other non-professionals have been waiting for this for a long
time. Although global 5G coverage is expected to begin in 2020, some companies have begun to
develop their own rules. For example, Verizon has announced 5G coverage in 19 US cities so that
more cities will be covered by 2020.
At least at the basic level, there are no obstacles to the implementation of 5G technology. As a
newer network technology, 5G can transmit data at speeds of up to 10Gb per second, while 4G
can only reach 100Mb per second. From this set of data, we can see that 5G can ensure faster
internet, lower latency and larger interconnects (capable of connecting more devices at the same
time).
These advantages make IoT devices the biggest beneficiaries of this new technology - especially
for small, low-power devices, and higher speeds mean faster network data transfer. In addition,
the efficient interconnection of 5G networks means that more IoT devices will benefit.
The Internet of Things technology allows tangible objects that are used every day to connect to

the Internet, transmit data through algorithms and better serve customers. At present, the most
intuitive manifestation of the rapid development of Internet of Things technology is the
proliferation of smart devices such as TVs, furniture, and vacuum cleaners. Currently, there are
already smart homes that are completely operated by built-in algorithms.
As family life becomes smarter, it means that the smart city we mentioned earlier is not far off.
The goal of smart cities is to reduce emissions and reduce energy costs. McKinsey estimates that
with the help of smart roads, commuting time can be increased by 15-20% and response time for
emergency services is increased by 20-35%. As mentioned earlier, 5G will provide a way for these
smart homes, smart cities, and more smart devices to realize their true potential.
Once you have a platform for smart devices, especially low-power devices, the Internet of Things
will be greatly promoted. It is more convenient to operate these devices, so more devices will be
added to the network, and more people will use it. In fact, human life is completely inseparable
from the Internet. Since 2016, the United Nations has declared the Internet as a human right and
everyone should have the right to join the Internet.
Although the combination of 5G and the Internet of Things has proven to be available, there are
still legitimate concerns, especially in the areas of security and privacy. This is where the
blockchain comes in!
Many people today know at least virtual currency, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, and Litecoin.
But only a few people really master the technology behind it: blockchain. Blockchain is a new
application mode of computer technology such as distributed data storage, point-to-point
transmission, consensus mechanism, and encryption algorithm.
The distributed nature of the blockchain means it can withstand most security issues. The
blockchain system provides better hacker protection than its traditional client-server system. This
is why it is very safe to use virtual currency for online transactions.
Although the combination of the Internet of Things and 5G has great potential, it can only be
escorted by blockchain technology. Although 5G provides network support for more IoT device
access networks and data exchange, the security provided by the blockchain ensures the security
of user data and data exchange. In fact, this trinity technology triangle is very powerful, because
each part will strengthen the other part.
Earlier this year, a Chinese doctor used a robot to perform the world's first 5G teleoperation on
the brains of patients a few miles away. With the dramatic improvement in global healthcare
services, more is expected to happen. Then, security in this area becomes critical, and
implementing blockchains in healthcare will make remote surgery more secure.
In addition, it is expected that with the widespread promotion of 5G networks, the adoption of
smart devices will also increase significantly, which will mean that more data will be run on the
blockchain than ever before. This is also a challenge for existing blockchain technology!
Because existing blockchain technology does not support massive processing, blockchain
technology stores transaction data in blocks linked by chains. Taking the bitcoin chain as an
example, it takes about 10 minutes to build each block. What happens if there is more data to
process? The size of each block is greatly increased so that the formation of the block requires a
longer response time.
For the above reasons, although 5G provides extremely fast network speeds for IoT devices,

integration with blockchain can actually result in very slow processing of data and transactions.
This is an expected challenge to inject blockchain technology into the 5G and IoT domains, and
the specific solution to this challenge does not seem to be obvious. Perhaps the speed of 5G or
better cellular technology will balance this slower processing.
The development of 5G, the Internet of Things and the blockchain requires the three to work
together to thrive in this globalized world. The general trend of 5G and the Internet of Things has
been determined, so we must hope that engineers and developers will find ways to solve or
bypass the problem of blockchain scalability so that these three technologies can be fully
integrated to release them.
