2. HOW TO
ANALYZE
HISTORY
What we'll be doing in class
WHAT ARE THE LONG TERM EFFECTS
OF A SHORT TERM DECISION?
Risk Factors:
Ocular Melanoma
The American Academy of Ophthalmology reports
that tanning beds produce 100 times more UV levels,
or the expected intensity of ultraviolet radiation,
than what you would get from the sun. This can
severely damage the external and internal structures
of your eyes and eyelids.
Pre-Mature Aging
Tanning causes the skin to lose elasticity and wrinkle
prematurely.
Melanoma
The Skin Cancer Foundation reports that there’s a
75% increased risk of developing life-threatening
melanoma from just one indoor tanning session
before age 35.
3. TANNING BED MELANOMA AND AGE

1.46x Risk
The chart above shows how age plays a huge factor in your likeliness to develop melanoma.
However, tanning at ay age can increase your risk of melanoma. More than 419,000 cases of skin
cancer in the U.S. each year are linked to indoor tanning, including about 245,000 basal cell
carcinomas, 168,000 squamous cell carcinomas and 6,200 melanomas
4. apply their lessons to other fields
40%
Of Caucasians are at the risk of skin
cancer based upon their smaller
melanosomes.
2%
Of African Americans are at risk of
skin cancer, because they produce
larger amounts of melanin.
5. Alternatives
Spray Tans
Spray Tans are
another great
alternative to
tanning beds. This
one is a little more
costly, but it is very
safe and effective.
Sunless Lotion
Lotions are a great
alternative to
tanning beds. They
are perfect, becuase
they are safe and
easy to do yourself.
