Curriculum Statement : To enable the learner to comprehend Homonyms 
Learning Outcomes : The pupils will be able to 
1) get an idea about homonyms 
2) understand the difference between homonyms and homophones. 
Content Analysis : Homonyms are the pair of words, which have same spelling but different meaning 
Teaching Learning Resources : Computer 
Prerequisites : The pupils might be familiar with homophones.
Class room activity 
The teacher shows two pictures for each of the following words. 
1) Bat - Picture of a small flying animal and cricket bat 
2) Cricket - Picture of the game cricket and small jumping insect 
3) Trunk - Picture of trunk of tree and elephants trunk 
4) Key - Picture of key of lock and computer keys
Classroom activities 
5) Lock - Picture of lock of a door, drawer etc and lock of hair 
6) Horn - Picture of animals horn and vehicle’s horn 
7)Letter - Picture of the letters of the alphabet and plotters send by the post 
8)Cell - Picture of person and animal cell 
9)Band - Picture of a musical band and strip of cloth
Classroom activities 
10) Club - Picture of club used to hit the ball in the golf and club in cards. 
Teacher: What do you identify these pictures? 
Pupils : Some words which have same spelling but different meaning 
Teacher: Good, these words are called homonyms. 
Homonyms are group of words, which share same spelling and pronunciation but have different meanings. 
The word Homonym is delivered from two words ‘Homos’ which means same and ‘onyms’, which means 
name. 
The teacher gave more examples for homonyms with meanings 
1) Rock a) Hard substance which the earth is made of 
b) loud music with a strong beat that is usually played and sung by a group of people 
using instruments such as electric guitars and drums 
2) Play a) Have fun 
b) Drama

b) Container 
4) Mole a) Natural dark spot or small dark lump on someone’s skin 
b) A small animal with black fur that lives underground 
5)Row a) A number of people or things arranged in a line 
b) Make a boat move through the water by using oars 
6) Bow a) Briefly bend towards them as a formal way of greeting 
b) A weapon for shooting arrows. 
7) lie a) Not true 
b) Lying some where means you are in a horizontal position usually in bed. 
8) left a) One of two opposite directions 
b) Something left means it remains when the rest has gone or used

Activity 1 
The teacher divides the students into small groups and asks them to find out 5 homonyms
classroom activities 
Activity 2 
Then the teacher asks the students to find out the different meanings of the following words 
1) Mean - 
2) Tear - 
3) Well - 
4) Race – 
5) Ring – 
The teacher provides more examples with meanings and sentences 
1) Fine -> meaning 1: Something that you admire and think is very good 
sentence -> This is a fine atmosphere 
meaning 2 : Punishment in which a person is ordered to pay sum of money 
sentence -> She was fined rupees 3000 and banned from driving 
2) Watch -> meaning 1: Look something for a period of time 
sentence -> The police watched him closely 
meaning 2: A small clock which you wear on a strap 
sentence -> He uses titan watch.

3) Tip -> meaning 1: The tip of something long and narrow is the end of it 
sentence -> The sleeves covered his hands to the tips of his fingers 
meaning 2 : Gave some money in order to thank them for their services 
sentence -> Do you really think its customary to tip the waiters? 
4) Light -> meaning 1 : Not weighing very much 
sentence -> Try to wear light, loose clothes 
meaning 2 : Electric lamp 
sentence -> The janitor comes round to turn the lights out 
5) steal -> meaning 1 : Take something away without the owner’s permission 
sentence -> He was accused of stealing a small boy’s bicycle 
meaning 2 : Move in a quiet or secret way 
sentence : Leroy stole up the hall to parlor 
Activity 3 
The teacher divides the students into two groups. One group should say a word and the other group should 
say the different meanings of the word and suitable sentences and then vice versa
HOMEWORK 
1) The teacher asks the students to find out the homonyms as many as possible 
2) The teacher asks the students to find out the difference between homophones 
and homonyms
