4. HISTORY:
PREVIOUS GENERATIONS:
BABY BOOMERS:
– Old school values
– 1 job and 1 employer for life
– Permanent employment and benefits driven
– Education is the only way to grow – entrepreneurship is a no-no
GENERATION X:
– Mostly born in 80’s babies
– Custodians and originators of current basic framework that has set the tone for
what’s to come in the world of work
– Driven by career progression and higher salary
– Education is important and still seen as the best way forward to meet career and
earnings goals, although there are no longer any guarantees that your qualification
will help achieve these goals
Who are You?
5. HISTORY:
CURRENT GENERATIONS AND THE FUTURE:
• You are Generation Y
• You are boundless in your aspirations, influenced by the current social-economic
circumstances in SA and global trends, but also availability of information at your
disposal
• Education is important to you, but traditional frameworks may not necessarily appeal
to your current career or career prospects based on changing career landscape as
everything becomes more digitized
• Your career prospects are likely driven by your passions
Who are You?
7. • Who you are is a reflection of the current happenings in the world and your
immediate surroundings
• If you can’t move with the times or relate to your immediate or bigger environment,
you become obsolete
– Even companies go through this type of transition as a business and in terms of
the type of skill set that they retain or retrench
– The only thing that is constant is change – if you can master the skill of
adaptation, your chances of success in any adopting and implementing all other
skill sets of your choice increases tremendously
• As a member of Generation Y, you need to learn to play according to the rules of
your generation while keeping in mind that the people who will hire you will likely be
from the generation before yours
• Your style of communication needs to display an understanding of where the
prospect employer comes from and where they’re going, and where you see your
role in all of that with absolute confidence
The World around, and You
8. • The best way to display this understanding is to have a genuine passion for what
you’re applying for
– There is no replacement for the “spark” that shows in a person’s eyes when they
talk about something they’re passionate about
• If you don’t have a qualification that is traditionally relevant to what you’re applying
for, try and find plausible ways to apply your educational background to the role
you’ve applied for, and if you can’t, try by all means to obtain minor qualifications
and get involved in projects that show your genuine interest in the line of business
your prospect employer is in
– The applicant who shows the baker a sunken loaf of bread has a much better
chance of being hired as the baker’s apprentice than the applicant who comes
completely bare handed
The World around, and You
9. • All of the above points illustrate the following without you necessarily having
experience:
– Passion for what the prospect employer does
– Passion for the prospect employer’s brand
– Understanding of the industry
– Your excitement to become a part of the industry
– Your excitement to want to add value to the prospect employer’s business
Your Positioning

INTERVIEW GONE WRONG VIDEO:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqT3rbCutTo
Getting the job always involves displaying appropriate behaviours .
Never…..
• Lie in an Interview
• Be too comfortable
• Think your past does not impact on the present
• Misrepresent yourself
• Be over confident
Enjoy the video and see how it should not be done!!!!
14. Presentation:
•Appropriate for the type of environment you’re going to
•Some industries/companies very informal, but you should always dress in a
way that reflects the fact that you’re there for an interview
•If a company is like “Outsurance” where people go to work in shorts and flip
flops, you should at the very least dress semi formal
•When in doubt, just wear a suit or any collection of clothing you have that’s
as close to this as possible
Women – no excessive cleavage or extremely short dresses
Men – no funny colour combinations, ¾ pants with white socks,
sneakers etc.
• Clean and simple does the trick every time, irrespective of what
company you’re visiting
NO GUM!
CELL PHONE OFF!
Do’s and Don’ts - Interview
17. Communication:
BODY LANGUAGE
• Stand up to greet the interviewer when they meet you for the first time
• Make sure you know the interviewers name and how to pronounce it
• Firm handshake – not too soft and don’t rip the hand off, the best way to get
an idea of what’s acceptable is giving the same amount of firmness as the
person interviewing you
• When sitting or walking, ensure you always do it up right – no slouching or
rocking in your chair
• Make direct eye contact and smile regularly
• Keep your hands on your lap or placed firmly on the table with your hands
clasped together
Do’s and Don’ts – Body Language
18. Communication:
SPEECH
• You need to know your CV like the back of your hand
– Always ensure to folder with all your important documents including a copy of your
CV for yourself and the interviewer, ID and drivers license if you have, certified
copies of qualifications
• You need to respond to any question asked in a way that highlights your strengths
• Where faced with questions that revolve around your weaknesses, ensure that you
answer them honestly but in a way that again emphasizes how you can use your
strengths to counter your weaknesses
• Ensure that you answer questions directly and not the long way around
• Ensure that every answer you provide is easily understood by the interviewer
• A smile and small talk will take you a long way and help you build an instant
rapport with the interviewer
• Never use slang or vulgar language
– Only ever use slang ( to a very light degree) if the interviewer uses the same with
you – remember adaptability!
Do’s and Don’ts – Speech
19. Communication:
SPEECH
• Always be polite (thank you, please)
• Always leave the question of remuneration to the interviewer and only ask
questions around package structure when they bring it up
• When you’re asked funny or unorthodox interview questions like “if you
could be 1 person who would that person be”, it’s ok to take your time to
laugh a bit about the question and think about it before you answer – just
remember to stay true to “Who Am I?” principle covered before, but
remaining conscious of where you are and what impression your choice
would give the interviewer of the type of person you are
• Ensure that you display knowledge of your research into the company,
your prospect role in the company and how you can add value to the
company through joining them
Do’s and Don’ts – Speech

line with the prospect employer’s interests or the role you’re applying for
– Spare time
– Current projects (NB!) and/or studies
Guidelines for your CV
27. • Research, research, research
• Follow up on all your applications
– Make sure you don’t become an annoyance to the prospect employer
– Never arrive unannounced
– Don’t ever call or send an email more than once in a week – UNLESS
they’ve given you a clear indication of when to follow up
• “Call me on Tuesday” doesn’t mean call me on Tuesday at 8am – it’s
generally better to call later in the afternoon
• Apply for roles that you actually qualify for, especially in terms of
experience
• Never address your CV to more than 1 person in your application (email
specifically)
• Ensure your CV is perfect in grammar, font, writing, type of picture you
have on your profile etc
How to Land it
28. • NEVER GO DOOR TO DOOR!
– This is sign of desperation
– This is unprofessional
– Always make an appointment if you’re going to show face
• Remember to never give up – every “no” is only another chance to get an
even better opportunity
– Learn from the negative responses – where possible, ask for feedback
on where you can improve if the person is willing to give you the
feedback
– The best way to do this, is to send an email afterwards thanking the
interviewer for their time even though you were unsuccessful, ask
kindly for any positive criticism they might like to share on where you
can improve your representation
No No’s
30. • Be clear about your career goals
• Ensure that your employer knows what your career goals are
• Build networks with people relevant to your career growth
aspirations in your organization especially
• Don’t be scared to volunteer your free time (with your
immediate Manager’s approval ONLY)
• Keep yourself informed on industry on-goings
• Continue your education in line with your aspirations,
industry norms and trends
• Don’t be afraid to say no! Not every opportunity is for you or
in line with your goals or your passion
